What’s Going On With Captain Marvel

I was endeavoring to delay announcement of this until Marvel was set to publicize the new projects I have coming up with them. But Joe

  1. Ken,
Big corporations? Please. First, I did not say that. Second, why is it so hard for parents to tell their children no? Third, if as a result of ads at the end of “Teen Titans”, “Spider-Man” and “X-Men”, more kids were actually bugging their parents for something to read, as opposed to the latest video game or $120 sneakers, is that necessarily a bad thing? I don’t think so. You may disagree. But i a tired of laws that supposedly “protect children” that simply are used to control people. Some kids bugged their kids for a G.I. Joe comic! So what?

  2. Jonathan (the other one),
Your last post was actually pretty funny!
    Thanks,
    Jerome

  3. Captain Marvel is one of my favorite comics, one of the ones I always make sure I get when I go to my local shop. I’ll certainly be re-reading the older issues to make up for it.

But on the other hand, as I’ve been reading comics for more than twenty years, I’ve developed a taste for limited series over ongoing ones; There’s a beginning, there’s a climax, there’s an end. You can buy every issue without going digging into the rent money.

An upcoming Hulk mini sounds like just my thing. Tell me Sam Kieth or Dale Keown is gonna draw and and I’m sold.

Since Marvel is dropping Captain Marvel, would it be possible for DC to bring Peter in to do a monthly SHAZAM comic? 🙂

I believe Jeff Smith (BONE) is working on this now.

Actually, I was going for The Pun..SHAZAM…Captain Marvel…and all that.

  5. I am extremely disappointed that Captain Marvel is being cancelled. Personally I thought this was an excellent book. Despite Chris Cross leaving I thought the “insane” books were quite good. With the exception of killing a character, I get tired of seeing the status quo. Having Marv go nuts was an interesting twist that really didn’t hurt the character. I’ll definitely be looking forward to reading the Hulk though. HE definitely isn’t the same without Peter David creating the direction.

  6. At last. I’ve been struggling to keep reading Hulk every month, hoping every time that it will be better than the last issue. Now all it needs is either Dale Keown or Gary Frank and my world is whole once more.

  7. Is the limited Hulk series about Rick Jones’ brother, Bruce, who is slowly and painfully slaughtered by Carnage? And then, rather than seeking out justice on Carnage, Rick and Hulk throw him a big party, where they celebrate with the entire Marvel Universe! Wait…maybe Bruce is permanently maimed instead of murdered. I’d hate to see him get all of those virgins after what he did to the Hulk.

  8. I’m sorry to say that I’m one of those fans whose reaction to Captain Marvel’s cancellation is mixed. On the one hand, I’m disappointed that another PAD series is biting the dust and I will definitely miss seeing Genis, Rick et al every month. On the other hand, I really disliked the whole “Marv Goes Nuts” storyline. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that, for me, that storyline ruined Genis-Vell as a hero. I kept buying the series, hoping that something would happen that would restore the old Genis, the one I liked, but it became increasingly clear that PAD had written himself (and Genis) into a corner. Genis came to remind me of Garth of Izar from the “Who Killed Captain Kirk?” storyline that PAD wrote for DC’s STAR TREK series. Garth tried to kill Kirk because, even after he was cured of his madnes, nobody at Starfleet was willing to give any significant responsibilites to a (former) madman who had demonstrated a penchant for homicide. When Genis helped to destroy the whole Marvel Universe, he went too far to ever come back.

One thing about the “Marv Goes Nuts” storyline that really bothered me was the idea that Genis wasn’t really insane, he was just pretending to be crazy because doing so allowed him to act without considering the consequences. If that theory was true, then that, to me, would make him FAR WORSE than simply being insane. Truly insane people cannot be held fully responsible for their actions, at least not to the same degree as sane people. Criminals who are found to be “guilty but insane” are kept from hurting other people but not otherwise punished. However, if someone acts in an insane manner simply because he doesn’t want to limit his choices by thinking about the consequences, then that person IS fully responsible for his actions and should be punished as fully as possible. So what should happen to people who destroy whole universes? (Thanos doesn’t count because he destroyed the Marvel Universe only temporarily in order to repair a flaw that would have otherwise destroyed the MU permanently AND he restored things to exactly how they had been when he was finished.)

As for the final issue, I’m hoping that it will contain the (hinted-at) true reason why Entropy (and Epiphany?) destroyed the Marvel Universe. The whole idea that Entropy destroyed the MU just to kill his father, Eternity, and then was so bereft of purpose that he decided to become the new Eternity and recreate the MU always seemed too much of a gimmick to me, something to fit the “sons become their fathers” theme that PAD was using for that storyline. I much preferred the way Jim Starlin did it in MARVEL UNIVERSE: THE END.

As a fan of PAD’s work, I would never have dropped the series but, now that it’s been cancelled, I can’t help feeling a bit relieved. Sorry, but I was a lot more disappointed when DC cancelled Supergirl.
