Hope it’s good news; afraid it isn’t.
Well, Quesada said in an interview that Captain Marvel was “going the way of the dinosaurs.” This could mean “destroyed by an unthinking force,” but it could also mean “incredibly popular with children.”
Well, maybe the second option isn’t so likely.
Hopefully it doesn’t mean he’s going to get a purple costume, gain 200 lbs, and start singing. That would be a bad thing….
Of course disappearing from the shelves would be a bad thing too…

i am on the other hand very eager to find out what other work pad has planned for marvel, can you give us any hints PAD?
I sincerely hope this isn’t bad news, though from Joe Quesada’s remarks, it looks like it might be.
My hope is that it might be bad news with a pinch of good news, i.e. that the book is not being cancelled, but “transformed” or “evolved” into some new PAD project, i.e. a Rick Jones monthly, or, I dunno, something else.

I could see the current Marvel editors trying a Rick Jones style superhero satire. Do I think it’s gonna happen? I don’t know. I take comfort in knowing that PAD has at least one more Marvel project coming. (Back in January, he said he had two big Marvel projects this year, and I’m hoping that’s still the case.)

I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed. Captain Marvel is one of the few titles I enjoy reading these days. I’d really hate to see it go. 🙁

After the reinvention and relaunch, I thought we had a chance for a long Cap run. Guess, you should not only not give the readers what they think they want, but not give the editors what they think they want.

Well, I don’t think the series is cancelled YET–after all, Quesada’s comments were “probably” not “definately”.
Plus Chris Sotomayor has said that a new artist is starting on CM #25, which says that the series isn’t ending with the current arc!

Seems people are just suckers for comeback stories.
I too hope it isn’t bad news, but keep in mind along with what Quasada said, that Captain Marvel’s circulation is pretty low these day (like 22,500 to 23,000). If it does get canned, and that will suck, but we should be greatful that it lasted this long.
A cancellation would sadden me, but I have to say that the title got as much PR as you can possibly get–a relaunch as well as a publicity stung (stupid as it was). Not sure how much more you could ask.

Whatver it takes to move PAD that much closer to returning to the Hulk, I’m fine with.
It may very well be a quid-pro-quo. Perhaps Marvel, at long last, is willing to cede the book title “Captain Marvel” to DC, in exchange for letting them keep the just-plain-Marvel name for the company without legal challenge.
Nothing Marvel has done with a character named Marvel has done very well, outside of the one who died of cancer. And giving DC the rights to the name isn’t going to help either, since the Big Red Cheese hasn’t built any massive readership, either. A simple legal “exchange of prisoners” might be the real reason for the book’s cancellation.

True on all counts. It sorta seemed like Captain Marvel was the testing grounds for new experiements like that horrible coloring/inking process (BLAH!). And every time a good penciller would come aboard, he’d be stolen off pretty quickly for some other Marvel project.
For what it’s worth, the last three issues of Captain Marvel have simply rocked! Bravo!
I would be sad if Captain Marvel really gets cancelled but unfortunately, it wouldn`t surprise me.
In a comic both, story and art, are important. The last few issues, my enjoyment of the comic definitely suffered because of IMO poor artwork. I kept buying the comic because I like PAD`s work but even I was tempted at times to drop it. Instead I kept hoping, maybe it will get better.
I am sure, other fans don`t have that incentive. That means another factor comes into play: Marvel is infamous for it to drop titles that are not top sellers.
I think in general, Marvel`s comics have suffered enourmously in quality. I am nearly 42 years old and have been collecting Marvels since I was 12. There were times when I spent a lot of money each month on Marvels and loved them. All that is left now are X-Men and Avengers and I buy both of them only out of habit because I have been doing so for such a long time. Maybe one day I will indeed drop them as well because I don`t enjoy them, haven`t done so for many years.
All Marvel is good for seems to make movies with characters that were mostly born in the sixties. I can`t see anything fresh going on in Marvel and I wonder how long a company that seems to be unable to develop new popular, lasting stories and characters can survive. PAD`s Captain Marvel brought some fresh air into that program. If that is gone as well, that would be a sad day indeed.

You know, if everyone lamenting the (presumed)loss of this series would have bought an extra copy or two to give to their friends, that might have helped. Seriously, I 1.) Fell Peter has done much better work anyway 2.) Am tired of people who complain about the lack of diversity in the industry and then buy Austen’s X-Men or Jenkins’s Spider-Man “out of habit”. Tell your dealer you want 10 copies of “Captain Marvel” or “Spider-Girl” or another struggling book. Tell him or her to give them to people who may enjoy them. It’s really the only thing to do if you really care about “different” books. FTR
BTW, PAD, I did pick up this book, as I do almost all your stuff (including novels). But this book did start off relatively strongly. Then sales fell. Isn’t it possible a lot of readers simply didn’t like it?
Okay, Jerome, how about those of us struggling to make ends meet, who can’t even afford to buy our favorites every month? (One month, I literally had to choose between buying “Supreme Power” or paying the copay to my daughter’s pediatrician – no contest, but I’ll probably never get another crack at that issue, at least until the trade PB comes out.) How can we help boost the “struggling” books – the ones that don’t get nearly the circulation they deserve? I, for one, can’t buy books for other people…

And there ARE people who buy every single Spidey and X-book, then complain aboy diversity in the marketplace. My comment was mainly directed at them.
