Alyson Miers: “As Chris Rock pointed out, ‘he speaks so well’ isn’t what you say about a serious political candidate.”
I realize this isn’t going to satisfy anyone who is bound and determined to find racism anytime, anywhere, in anything — but Obama’s eloquence exceeds that of just about any major politican I can think of. He has a gift rarely found in anyone. That people are remarking on it doesn’t necessarily indicate racism.

At the very least, “He speaks so well” and McCain’s “I must commend Senator Obama’s eloquence” are backhanded compliments. It’s like the phrase “silver tongued devil” in that they’re giving him credit for being a good talker, but not really admitting that they like him in any real way.

Yep, that Joe Biden really is a bášŧárd.
That wasn’t one of Joe Biden’s better moments. That’s the kind of thing the campaign strategists are thanking their lucky stars hasn’t happened again.
Aaaaaand it turns out Joe the Plumber isn’t actually related to Charles Keating. Okay, I take that part back. I still think he’s just eerily perfect for what McCain wants us to see.

Beyond that, everyone and their brother talked about how Bill Clinton was A polished speaker, well-spoken, elequint and articulate, etc. People tend to say that about anyone who can speak well whether they’re white, black, yellow, green…

Biden specifically referred to Obama as black. He wasn’t painting his selective compliment as something he would say about anyone. He said something casual, and when he was busted on it, he copped to the need to speak better.
This is in contrast to you, who is sheltering the compliment that cuts from its selective application.

Considering the guy he’s lobbying to replace (to quote “The American President”) can’t find a coherent sentence with both hands and a flashlight, maybe it’s not surprising that it would be remarked upon.

Yeah, but with this 24/7 news cycle and cameras following the candidates everywhere but the bathroom; you’re going to get moments like that without having to stage them. I mean, think about how much McCain/Palin gaffs and blunders we’ve had since the convention. I’m sure that McCain would have liked to have not had cameras on him several times in the last few months.
Joe the Plumber asked a question that a lot of people have been asking. He would have never been the celebrity he is now had Obama not flubbed the answer and worded things so poorly. It wasn’t Joe that made Joe a news story; it was Obama’s answer to Joe that made their exchange a tool in the McCain Campaign’s toolbox this week.

His paranoid ranting about Obama’s tax plan still makes no sense, though.
Bill, I guess I’m confused because I thought the Someone at a Palin rally shouted “kill him” in response to Palin’s unabashed attempt to incite the crowd by linking Obama to terrorism committed when he was a young child. referred to the possibly discredited Scranton incident
But according to that article there wasn’t any “Kill him” there either: Last week, The Washington Post reported a similar incident during a Palin rally in Clearwater, Fla. The Secret Service investigated that allegation and found no indication that “kill him” was ever said, or if it was said, that the remark was directed at Obama.
Listening to tapes of that rally, the Secret Service heard “tell him” or “tell them,” but agents never heard “kill him,” Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
See, now I’m really confused because when I tried to find this on youtube as Bill suggested I got a McCain speech that supposedly has it–the one Craig alluded to, I think–and what I hear when McCain says “Who is the real Barak Obama” is a guy who yells out “Tell me!”. But the AP story says it’s a Palin rally where someone said “Tell him” or something like that. Are they referring to the same speech?
So I ask again–a link to some evidence? Keep in mind that from what has been reported PAD felt safe in writing Terrorism is the new Communism, and there are McCain and Palin, stoking crowds to such over-the-top fury with their attempts to draw tortured connections between Obama and terrorism that you can actually hear people screaming, “Kill him!” when Obama’s name is mentioned. From the reports I’d read it sounded like that was what was happening. So how come it’s proving so difficult to find any unambiguous evidence?
That wasn’t one of Joe Biden’s better moments. That’s the kind of thing the campaign strategists are thanking their lucky stars hasn’t happened again.
Biden is lucky nobody pays attention to him. He had another moment the other day where he said that the most important thing was a 3 letter word. JOBS.
Ok, that could happen to anyone. But only Joe would make it worse by spelling out all 3 letters; J…O…B…S.
He’s a hoot. All kidding aside, he’s smarter than he seems and at least he will provide late night comedy with some good yocks for the next 4 years, at least.

Assuming it’s the same link, what I heard was “Terrorist!” rather than “Tell me!”
There’s no “kill him!” unambiguously directed at Obama so far as I know, but when “traitor!” and “terrorist!” have been unambiguously shouted it’s not all that unreasonable to fear for the subject’s safety.
As for Biden’s comment about Obama, that’s not really a good example of how it’s commonly said. It was a complete screw-up on Biden’s part that nearly ended his campaign before it began.

Thanks, Jerry. I’d already seen the graphic on Andrew Sullivan’s blog, but I hadn’t previously seen the story. My “favorite” part is this:
“If I was racist, I would have looked at it through racist eyes,” she said. “I am not racist, which is why it probably didn’t register.”
FAIL.

I’m a little dubious about what the Secret Service can even do. Unless one of them happens to be standing next to a guy when he yells out something questionable, tracking him down would be a nightmare. I understand why they have to investigate, but man, I’m glad I don’t have their job.
Yeah. There are some things that I see from time to time that makes me roll my eyes where people claim “racism” where it’s a hëll of a stretch to make that charge stick, but this is so out there that I can’t believe that anyone could claim that they weren’t trying to use racist stereotypes to demean the man.

No, there was no idea at all in their minds that this was in the least bit racist in its presentation. Still, you have to admire their restraint. They didn’t put Obama in blackface.

That’s your qualification of racism? Demeaning someone by way of racist stereotypes?
Because that definition literally gives you the slack to harass minorities for standards you don’t necessarily hold to privileged ethnicities, and to deny it’s racism. No racist stereotypes implemented.
I’d be ashamed to get busted for being too dainty to waive that kind of privilege for myself.

Right, right. Because after “The Godfather,” “Godfather Part II,” “Godfather Part III”, “Goodfellas,” “Married to the Mob,” “The Sopranos,” “Analyze This,” “Analyze That,” not to mention countless real life trials involving criminals with similar nicknames, the “stereotype” was thisclose to dying off. And then I make a joke and suddenly it gains new life.

I’m surprised they didn’t have him holding a big plate of chitlins.
That’s insulting to me, a South’n white redneck ofay mofo. I can but imagine what Barry’s reaction is. He’s probably laughing at the ridiculously crude stupidity of it.
Look, whether we like it or not, none of this is really all that unusual. When Jackson ran for reelection, his opponent branded him as a murderer and adulterer; the murderer part came from the guy that Jackson shot and killed in a duel, and the adultery came from his marrying Rachel when her divorce hadn’t been finalized.
Lincoln was characterized as a moronic bumpkin. And in more than a few instances, the allegations against a candidate turned out to be true, but the times were such that nobody cared. Tippecanoe Harrison really did massacre Indian women and children at Fort Detroit. Nobody cared, they were just redskins. At one time, being a brave Indian fighter was guaranteed to get you a job in Washington. It may astound you that such blatant racism is still out there, but if Barry gets in the Oval, his performance as President will most likely quash any doubts that anyone, of any color, has about him.
Me, I’m voting for him because I think he understands better than McCain exactly what it’s like to be poor and jobless in this country. The only person who can relate better would maybe be Chris Gardner, or somebody who’s still dead-ášš broke and living under an overpass.
Barry Obama’s a kid who grew up broke. His mom was on food stamps. He lived in Indonesia in a neighborhood that was about two steps up from a packing crate. He got where he is by working hard, staying in school and busting his ášš to improve himself.
John McCain came from a privileged family, the grandson of a Navy admiral. He was legacied into Annapolis. He has eight houses and is a career politician. He knows jack about what it’s like at the bottom of the food chain.
Now, seeing as most of us are down here at the bottom, scraping by from day to day, which one of the two do you think is gonna best serve us poor bášŧárdš?

Can anyone actually explain the fried chicken and watermelon thing to me?
I know it’s racist and I avoid talking about those two things in the wrong context. I just don’t get *why* it’s racist. These are two of the most delicious foods in the world. To me it sounds like someone saying, “Those crazy Canadians, boy do they love to wear pants and breath oxygen!”
How did these particular delicious foods become a racist symbol?

I don’t know either.

As far as I know, Jason, it’s a Southern US thing. Fried chicken and watermelon were specifically Southern food back in the bad old days, and for some reason African-Americans became associated with them. I believe that collared greens are also in that group as well.
I don’t know the exact reason, but that’s how the bigoted cookie crumbled.
Of course, I’m Canadian as well so I may well be way off-base, and this is just my understanding.

what I hear when McCain says “Who is the real Barak Obama” is a guy who yells out “Tell me!”.

The Right: “The Democrats think that “jobs” is a dirty word!!!”
Ðámņ…you’re good. You know, this election more than most has convinced me that the real talent isn’t with the pros. Many of the amateur youtube videos on both sides do the job better than the guys being paid big bucks. I think Obama has harnessed that talent better but the person who really embraces it will have one hëll of a team.

Well, at least none of us can agree on what the guy yelled out. 🙂
Still, you’d think the SS would be interested in this one too, as they have with the Palin rallies. Yet, there’s been nothing so far (that I’m aware of).
Wow…
Hey Alyson,
You wanna talk about scumbags playing racist crap for laughs that I think we can both agree on? Try this on for size.

And this was sent out in a GOP club newsletter.

They say that Obama dollar will be:
1) A food stamp.
2) Adorned with fried chicken and watermelon.
No, there was no idea at all in their minds that this was in the least bit racist in its presentation. Still, you have to admire their restraint. They didn’t put Obama in blackface.

This is beyond disgusting.
And their site also included a call for Obama to be waterboarded like the terrorist he obviously is.
Charming people.

Please.

And barbecued ribs. Don’t forget those.

“Jason M. Bryant at October 17, 2008 01:34 AM”
