I-CON

I will indeed be attending I-Con this weekend at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. It’s pretty amazing: I’ve been attending the convention since it occupied exactly one small building and had a dealer’s room about the size of my living room. Now the dealer’s room occupies the entirety of a sporting arena and the convention itself is sprawled over four buildings all over campus (which makes going from one panel to the next very exciting.)

The ever-reliable Glenn listed a link below, although if he wants to repeat it RIGHT HERE, he can go ahead and do so. I’m not sure what my schedule is, although I know I do have an autographing Saturday from 11:30 to 1. Also, they’d originally put me on a panel Sunday at 2 PM that was supposed to be about how New wave 1960s SF continued to resonate today. When I discovered the panel also had Harlan Ellison, Barry Malzberg and David Kyle on it among others, I dropped out. My feeling was that I had zero to contribute to the panel that guys like that couldn’t cover and then some. I’d rather be in the audience.

I will not be attending today, Friday.

  1. Wish I could do I-CON, but every year it’s the weekend after Lunacon (the con where five years ago my wife met the woman who introduced us), and right before Passover. (All that cleaning!) As Lunacon is in a hotel, we find it easier to cope with and choose it over I-CON.

I would love it if I-CON (or Lunacon) moved to the other end of the year, so that NYC’s two big cons are not one right after the other, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Any chance you might consider coming to Lunacon one of these years? Messrs. Hauman, Greenberger and DeCandido, among others, more than held their own, but Lunacon could always use more intelligent panelists.

  2. PAD,

The schedule has you down for two panels (The Many Incarnations of The Hulk and Comic Book Editing)on Saturday night, from 8-10 pm. This puts you directly opposite “Harlan Explains the Universe.”

I know that you sometimes change your schedule based on outside factors (such as, say, where you would rather be at that time of day), so I was wondering:

Do you think you’ll bail on the panels in order to see Harlan do his thing (for which I doubt anyone would blame you)? Or do you think you’ll stick to the schedule, thereby forcing my wife & I into a sort of “Sophie’s Choice” scenario (PAD or Harlan? Harlan or PAD? Decisions, decisions…)

    Just curious…

    😉

  3. This is the first year in many that I will miss Harlan at I-con. We moved to AZ this year for a new job my husband got. We can’t get away. Harlan is one of the best speakers EVER! When I hear him on ANY subject I always leave feeling that life is so good! I am really sad to miss it! When Peter joins in it is really fun! Who can forget the “It’s People” story? Well have fun all who get to go!! Maybe the year after next when Harlan goes again I can be there….

  4. Wahhh.

Wish I could go. That’s what I get for living in the midwest… specifically Oklahoma.

Not only Harlan, PAD… but Walt Simonson (who has done a number of covers for PAD books)…

    Have fun.

The only con we get is in Tulsa… and I can only meet Chewbacca so many times… though I did get to meet JoAnna Cameron last year, Tom Derenick the year before, and Joxer another year. The other states have all the fun…

  5. I will not be attending today, Friday.

Darn. I have a female friend who’s loving SAoN (and the comics of yours I lent her), and wanted to meet you. Oh well.

  6. I should say, that she can only make it Friday, but I’ll be there all three days.

  7. Alas, Robin and I won’t be there this year (short on $$). Neither, I’m told, will Friends of Lulu (after attending at least 5 years straight), or at least what’s left of the NY chapter. I’ll miss it, it’s a wonderful convention. Have a great time, guys!

  8. This is about my 6th I-CON in a row (I can’t make GenCon or Origins, but I always make it to I-CON!), and I plan on seeing both Peter David and Harlan Ellison. I’d also kill for a copy of BUBBA HO-TEP on video; I’ll be running THE STARFARERS OF CATAN and INWO Games; I plan on getting a picture of my ex-girlfriend/now-friend Cathy next to the largest, most elaborate alien there; and I plan to simply stand and soak in the atmosphere of the massive, bustling dealer’s room…

(If, of course, my ’87 Buick Century gets me there from the middle of Nassau County…)

  9. Had a great time at I-Con seeing Peter and Kathleen and all four daughters: Shana (whom I haven’t seen in a while and who looks great), Gwen, Ariel, and Caroline The Wonder Baby. The latter looked especially adorable in her red Paddington Bear overalls (complete with “PLEASE LOOK AFTER THIS BEAR” tag).

One of the high points was a panel on books being made into films with Harlan Ellison, Peter, me, and Scott Edelman. In real terms, this meant that the three of us were the Supremes to Harlan’s Diana Ross. Not that I’m complaining. The panel was great fun; it was an honor just to be there.

(Though I have to say the highest of the high points was getting to talk to Julius Schwartz and David Kyle at the banquet.)

  10. Hello PAD (and KRAD!). This isnt about I-Con, but I just wanted to tell you that I got my used copy of ‘Otherwere’ in the mail yesterday and just finished ‘Moonlight Becomes You’.

An awesome little tale. It seemed more like a n epiloge to ‘Howling Mad’ than a sequel, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I hope the ‘Howling Mad’ movie goes through, as it will be a classic.

  11. Good thing Joe Straczynski wasn’t there, or he might have spaced Caroline due to her coveralls. 🙂

  12. Tom-

Yea, but Joe would have had to come through Mama Bear which could have been a very messy situation.
