First, Peter will be appearing this weekend at I-CON at SUNY/Stony Brook. He’ll be there with Harlan. Everybody duck. (I’ll be there too, if anybody cares.)
Second, we’ve had to take steps and cut a few loudmouths from the comments sections, including the Brian Michael Bendis impersonator and the guy who thought he could insult Peter by calling him a cigarette. Go figure.
Behave, kids. We know the tensions are running high with the fun in the desert sun, but a bit of calm does us all good.

I don’t recall seeing a Bendi impersonator or someone using the “f” word. Was it on the POLITICS & THE OSCARS board?
In any case, given Peter’s enlightened attitude regarding homosexuals, his response to the droog could’ve simply have been, “Since some of my best friends are cigarettes, and one was my best friend in high school and best man at my first wedding, I take that as a huge compliment.” 🙂
Was PAD called a cigarette or a cigarette butt?
Cutting people, eh? Sounds like privatized censorship…
And just to make sure I get cut: Glen, Petey’s a cigarette and you’re a bundle of sticks! Hahahahahaha!!!
Just to make a couple of things clear:
It’s one thing when some idiot calls me a ******. Water off a duck’s back. It’s quite another when he prints it thousands of times and crashes out people’s computers. When that happens, the postings go away, and he goes away. The really sick thing is that, if the IP numbers are to be believed (it isn’t absolute, I know, but there’s a possibility), then he was one of the people who subsequently posted a note condemning his own actions.
Second, I’m endeavoring to keep this board as broadly accessible as possible. But that means decisions get made, lines get drawn, and I do both. Tons of latitude for opinions, folks. But pure malicious disruption or strings of pointless profanity are going to the cornfield, along with the perps. I will NOT let this board become toxic.

Besides, this is a private board… no one *has* to provide a “talk back” section here, and if Peter or Glenn want to erase something, we shouldn’t have a problem with it…
It be kind of like if someone spraypainted crap on your house… you’d have every right to remove it…
Oh man, now THERE’d be one weird lawsuit someday… I can just see some fringe group plaster some derogatory message on private property somewhere, and then try to sue whoever at that property that removed it, citing free speech or censorship… outlandish to be sure, but stranger lawsuits have happened…
John
Are you going to be at I-CON today PAD, or just Saturday and Sunday?
Ya know… this is one of the few places I go to consistently… Why? I get thoughtful comments on popular culture, war, and comics. Now I get this sixth grader who yells fág and basically crashes many computers on the way.
Not what I signed up for.
I’ll stick around, but here’s an idea… true intelligence is where you can actually have a different opinion, and still respect the other person.
Low intelligence results to name calling, and discounting the other persons ideas just because you disagree with them.
Choose which side you’re on.

Such a court case shouldn’t get too far. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the First Amendment only prohibits government censorship of speech (and even then isn’t absolute; things like shouting fire in a crowded theater, amplifying your speech on public property at 3 am such that it wakes up people sleeping, etc. have all been banned with the ban upheld by courts). That’s been extended to certain privately owned “gathering spaces” such as shopping malls, but in this forum Peter and Glenn can pretty much do whatever they like without violating the First Amendment since they ain’t the government.
Chris, I was considering cutting you just for misspelling my name.
Peter was called a cigarette? *Blink* *Blink*… I don’t get it!
And no, nobody *needs* to explain it. Peter and Glenn have decided to move on, and so will I.
BTW, Glenn, when are the next set of BIDs coming out?
I don’t get it. Why would anyone call Peter David a bassoon?

Well, Betty, we must all draw the line somewhere. 😉
(I couldn’t decide between that line or an Airplane! reference. “Cut me just for misspelling your name? Surely you must be joking.”)
PAD’s certainly got the right to object to anything that’s insulting that’s been posted on the site’s software, and I’m glad to know in fact that it is possible to delete any messages that’re deemed unjustly offensive. I know this, this site is much better than some crappy small forum that I once attended, where one of the administrators turned out to be a double-thinking racist who allowed one or two other very vile posters to be excused for their actions. I don’t go to that forum anymore. It consisted of some very politically correct members, and come to think of it, it wasn’t very influential either. Such distasteful forums are not only to be avoided, but their moderators to be looked upon in disgrace and shame as well.
“I will NOT let this board become toxic.”
Thank you, sir. Sincerely.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen a message like this on so many different blogs I read of late. What has happened to people that anyone needs to start posting “don’t be rude!” on their sites? Or have people always been this horrible and I’m just naive and unworldly?
I have seen some Boards on german sides who have introduced a login for everyone who wants to write an answer. You have to be a registered member before you can login and write a posting. Maybe this would be easier for Glenn and PAD to control rude posters?
