In Good “Company”

We went to see the extremely limited run of “Company” at Lincoln Center this afternoon. Talk about your once-in-a-lifetime casts: Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Anika Noni Rose, and Patti LuPone (showing that she can still stop a show when she belted out “Here’s to the Ladies Who Lunch.”) Considering the minimal amount of time they must have had to rehearse, they did a superb job with it. A Sondheim show that has truly aged well.

Also, speaking of aging well, funny story: We ate at a restaurant called P.J. Rourke’s and among various decorations on the wall, they had a photograph taken in what looked like the days of old radio, and it looked to be of an incredibly young Fyvush Finkel, a legend of Jewish theater not to mention such programs as “Picket Fences” and “Boston Public.” But no one in the restaurant knew if it was him. So who did we run into coming out of Lincoln Center, departing the same performance of “Company” as we had just seen? Fyvush Finkel, who verified that it was indeed a picture of him. In case you’re wondering, he liked the show.

  1. .
Good actor. Doesn’t get good parts in stuff nearly as often as he should.

  2. Sounds like an awesome show….. I worked with Fyvush’s son on the MS Galaxy about ten years ago, a fantastic piano player

  3. It’s the Fyvush connection thread, it seems; the woman who runs my daughter’s dance school is Fyvush’s ex-daughter-in-law.

Sounds like it was a great show — congrats for having the chance to see it!

  4. …and Patti LuPone (showing that she can still stop a show when she belted out “Here’s to the Ladies Who Lunch.”)

Is there anyone on God’s green earth who was suggesting that she couldn’t?

  7. Huh, I hadn’t heard about that. And I was just at Lincoln Center. Ah, well, my plate is pretty full. I’m seeing six shows in five days. I saw How to Succeed… last night, which I highly recommend if you get the chance. Today it’s Memphis and Book of Mormon, both of which I’m excited about.

  8. Wow, that’s the sort of cast that could put on just about anything and make it good. Awesome.

And while I liked Fyvush on BOSTON PUBLIC, I really loved him on PICKET FENCES, as the lawyer who seemed to always take the low road (“He hates me because I’m Jewish”) but was also a brilliant and successful defense attorney.

  9. One of the main reasons that I watch a David E. Kelley show is that he had a soft spot for Fyvush.
    .
The reason that I stop watching is that Kelley always gets quickly bored and leaves the writing to someone else after the first or second season.

Love the guy (Fyvush). Even in his small part in the reimagined Fantasy Island. Okay, he was the best part of the show.

  10. By the way, Peter, did you mean P.J. Clarke’s? I don’t know of any P.J. Rourke’s, but PJC matches the decor you describe.

  11. Previous concert versions of Broadway musicals performed by the NY Phil and soloists have been taped for later broadcast on PBS. Look for it in a few months.

  12. Wow! And last weekend I saw a production of Company here on the other side of the world! Great show.

Did Neil Patrick Harris play Bobby? (Still can’t get that theme out of my head….)

  13. My girlfriend is currently playing Sarah in a community theatre production of “Company.” Yeah, the “Bobby” theme is pretty hard to shake off…

As for Fyvush Finkel, he made a great guest appearance in “The Simpsons,” playing Krusty the Clown in a godawful TV movie (“”The Krusty the Clown Story: Booze, Drugs, Guns, Lies, Blackmail, and Laughter!”).

  14. too cool, Peter! I loved Fyvush Finkle as , the scheming travel agent in the late 90’s underrated Fantasy Island “reboot”.

  15. This might seem silly, but I could have sworn I heard that Fivus Finkle had passed away; its nice to hear that he’s still alive and kicking 🙂
