Cowboy Pete is moved to ask if anyone is paying attention to “Clone Wars”

And I include George Lucas in that question. Because if so, how did the following exchange get through, as seen in the promos for the next episode:

ANAKIN: I lost R2-D2.

OBI-WAN: Well, R2 units are a dime a dozen…

A little free advice to the writers over there: If you MUST use cliches, try to avoid cliches that don’t make sense in the universe your stories are set in, considering a dime is a unit of currency in the United States. In the Star Wars universe, the only denomination used is “credits.”

Pay attention, people. Don’t make me come over there.

  1. Woah, that is really bad. That line is just so wrong. Before I even got to the dime part, it seemed wrong that Obi-Wan would say something about R2 like that.

  2. yeah – pretty much burned out on SW after episode 2 – havn’t watched any new stuff sence.

I miss when it was Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie – the “Old School”

  4. Wow. That’s bad, where was the script editor?
Maybe it was a dream sequence…they don’t really count you know!

I was just watching several videos online about behind the scenes (especially the cool offices of Big Rock which is next door to Skywalker Ranch) and how they put so much care into each character

Personally, I’m waiting for the live action series (which is in the writing phase now and due to film next year–hopefully to air in 2010)

    THAT promises to be good.

  6. This sort of thing drives me crazy. It’s like when I’m reading a fantasy novel set in Medieval-ish times and I read how the archers fired the arrows. Grrrrr!

  7. Awk! Another case where they need to run scripts past fans to catch such continuity errors. Not just the “dime” thing, but the fact that I don’t see Obi-Wan being so callous about droids.

Only caught the first two episodes. Don’t care for the character designs. They work OK for 2D animation, but just aren’t as effective 1n 3D.

That said, I LIKED the first episode where we get to see just why smart people want to be really nice to Jedi. Especially short, green Jedi named Yoda. The second had its moments. The others are recorded and will be viewed in due time.

  9. Just to play devil’s advocate…

How do we know a “dime” in the Star Wars universe isn’t equal to, say, ten credits? Bear in mind that a dime in the real world is NOT a unit of currency; dollars and cents are. A dime is just a physical representation of ten cents.

  11. I’ve seen people up in arms all week about that line. I don’t see what the big deal is. In Empire, Han says, “Then we’ll see you Hëll!” I’ve never seen anything else about God, Heaven or Hëll in Star Wars. No one seems to be complaining about that. It’s a fun show. Besides, would you rather have Obi-Wan say, “Well, R2 Units are point one credit a dozen.” Sounds pretty lame…

  12. Please. It’s an utterly Earth cliche, and they don’t even have dimes outside the North American continent, much less a galaxy far far away. That shouldn’t have made it beyond the first script draft much less to air.

  14. Okay, a bad line of dialog got through. But I have been really enjoying this series.
BTW, PAD has in the past has responded unfavorably to fans that find some small bit wrong that doesn’t impact the overall story.
Does this ruin the episode more than whoever “Roger, Roger” is?

  16. It’s a gaffe, and no doubt…but at the same time, in general I’ve been liking Clone Wars, so I’ll let it slide.

(By the way, I think it’s pretty well established that Lucas isn’t paying close attention to Clone Wars, which some wags claim is part of the reason it’s watchable…)

  18. Yes the “see you in hëll” line bothered me for that exact reason.
the dime is bad enough, but how does Obi-Wan know what a “dozen” is?

It reminds me of a line that’s in the very early printings of the original Star Wars novel.

Ben notes that Luke takes to the Jedi training like a duck takes to water, which causes luke toa ask Ben what a duck is.

if you set your story in another galaxy, you should be more careful to avoid such “earth-isms”

  19. This makes me think of one of the problems I had with Donald Glut’s Empire Strikes Back novelization, which I finally read this year and which sadly turned out to be a pretty bad adaptation — flatly written, and not conveying the film’s often moody tone at all. And less than two pages in, the book described the Taun-Taun as having a “llama-like” head. And I reacted exactly the way PAD did to “a dime a dozen.” My rant (including giving props to PAD and Keith R.A. DeCandido for doing much better novelizations) is here:

    http://chris-walsh.livejournal.com/470454.html

I’ve cringed at what little I’ve seen of this version of Clone Wars, so I’ll cling to my appreciation of the Genndy Tartakovsky [sic?] series from a few years ago and call it good.

  21. Well, in Glut’s defense, he’s trying to convey an image to an earth-bound audience that hadn’t seen the film yet. It’s not as if one of the characters said it.

  23. I’ve been watching but I’d like to take the writers to task over the battle droids. Honestly, Microsoft would make better/smarter droids.

Droid: “We’re all gonna die!” (right before the ship plows into a moon.) I know it’s a kids show but can’t they get humor from the droids without stooping so low?

    What’s next?

This: A jedi is being held at blaster point by some droids.

“I’d have a last request. Can you explain something to me?”

    “What?”

    “What’s the value of pi?”

    “3.14159……”

All the droids in the area shutdown…

  24. Yes the “see you in hëll” line bothered me for that exact reason.

That line in Empire always bugged me, not just because it stands out as a relgious reference in the Star Wars universe, but just because Han spits it out with uncalled for levels of anger.

I mean, all that Rebel Alliance grunt did was point out that his Tauntaun will freeze if he goes out there in the Hoth night, and Han just snaps at him. I bet that grunt really cared for Tauntauns and didn’t want to see them hurt. He probably never made a crack about how bad a Tauntaun smelled. He was probably the Radar O’Reilly of the Hoth operation. And Han has to go bite the guy’s head off. Kinda a d*ck move on Mr. Solo’s part, I always thought…

  26. liquidcross: How do we know a “dime” in the Star Wars universe isn’t equal to, say, ten credits?

Because fractions of a credit are common, so one credit is more comparable to a dollar. Hëll, there’s a term for a tenth-of-a-credit piece (like the dime is a tenth-of-a-dollar piece), a decicred.

  27. “Yes the “see you in hëll” line bothered me for that exact reason.
the dime is bad enough, but how does Obi-Wan know what a “dozen” is?”

Why wouldn’t he know what a dozen is? I can sort of understand Peter’s complaint about the dime thing (although I think just the fact that they’re all speaking English, presumably “translated” from they’re own language for us, allows for expressions like that to slip in), but there’s nothing strictly American about the word “dozen.”

  29. I don’t see why Ben wouldn’t be so callous in his statement towards droids. Droids in the SW universe aren’t considered “people.” Only C-3PO gets his golden panties in a nelly bunch when R2 blows a gasket after being shot, nobody else really cares. And when 3PO is blown to bits? “Oh, Threepio… you’re a mess!”

The dime line is stupid though.

  31. It’s always bothered me that most people in Star Wars speak English. It’s a galaxy far, far, away, a long time ago…shouldn’t they at least be speaking Olde English?

Other than that, though, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen better than 80% of the prequel material. It’s got more of a core Star Wars feel to it…fun, a slight sense of danger, but overall more a fun adventure show that, like the original films, convey almost a pulp presentation.

I think it’s pretty widely documented that Lucas was more hands off during Empire’s filming. I’ve a feeling the “see you in Hëll” line is something Ford ad-libbed, and was kept in because it’s played to such good effect. Han’s still a smuggler and a scoundrel, and his anger in face of the situation reminds us that, for all he’s one of the good guys, he’s still not someone you want to cross.

  32. That dime line reminds me of, IMO, one of the worst movie lines ever!

And appropriately, from a really lousy film, Tim Burton’s “Planet of the Apes” remake. The film establishes a world where apes are the intelligent, civilized beings and humans are the lower form animals. OK, fine. So why then, as the apes say grace before eating a meal the end it with “AMEN”?

  34. lou: the dime is bad enough, but how does Obi-Wan know what a “dozen” is?

I’m totally okay with that. The word ‘dime’ might bother me, since it’s been established that they use credits, not our money. But ‘dozen’ doesn’t contradict anything. At that point, I just have to accept that they’re speaking English. It’s kind of a fuzzy line, saying that some words are okay and others aren’t, but I guess it’s all about feel and ‘dozen’ doesn’t feel as bad as ‘dime.’

  35. I’m okay with using dozen, because, even if we just take A New Hope alone, they also use meters, parsecs (misuse, in that case), and minutes. Still no excuse for dime, though 😛

  37. This is me going for a No-prize.

From what I gather (and I have to admit, I haven’t seen this cartoon series, nor the movie that preluded it) the idea of the SW universe as we are supposed to see it, is a historical retelling of events that occurred a long time ago in a galaxy far away. Now, just like when books are translated from one language to another, some phrases are changed to make it more understandable to the new audience; slang, or cliche’s don’t always translate well between cultures. Thus, in their efforts to retell this “true” star wars history via the cartoon, they’ve changed some phrases, slang that make sense only to someone from tatooine or wherever Obi is from, and found a modern day equivalent to make it easier for people in our modern day earth context to understand.

  39. liquidcross –

Duck Tales isn’t non-earth fiction, it’s alternate-earth fiction, where Earth is inhabited by humanoid ducks. It’s perfectly reasonable, in that case, to have dimes. At least, it’s no less reasonable than a duck swimming in a giant grain elevator full of money.
