Out This Week: Madrox #4

Yes, it’s out! Finally, the threads all come together is revealed! The killer of Sue Dibny is–

Whoops. Wrong book.

So. Madrox #4. Whad’ja think?

  1. You know what I thought? I’m gonna go out and grab it from the store right now, that’s what I thought.

  2. No, Madrox didn’t kill Sue Dibney; Scarlet Witch did. Her’s was an anger that could not be contained by one universe… 😀

Too bad I have to order my comics from Midtown, or else I wouldn’t have to wait until tomorrow to read IDC #7 and Madrox… stupid useless local comic shop forcing me to get stuff mail-order…

  3. Peter: Congradulations, I did not know that you were doing a comic based on Drax’s Ma. 🙂

  4. Dear lord, this story gets more film noir with every issue. Very cool stuff.

Also, Jamie so needs to hook up with Rahne. She may need to tear both their clothes off first and jump him so that he gets that she’s grown up, but it needs to happen none the less.

I so wish this was an ongoing series. This is awesome.

  5. This was infinitely more entertaining than ID Crisis (and transinfintely better written).

    Wish sales reflected that.

  6. Why couldn’t IDENTITY CRISIS end with a GOOD shock surprise ending?!

    Like MADROX # 4 did?

    Why, tell me why!

These were actually the only two books I bought this week, and I have to say I agree totally.

  8. Sue Dibney, aside from having a stupid last name, never bothered anyone! Why’d she have to die? Why? Why? Why not Zan of the Wonder twins? I mean, what kind of super power is turning into a bucket of water anyway?

  9. Anyone ever notice how much more powerful the godo guys are when they become evil? The Scarlet Witch was always getting captured, knocked unconscious, or tied up. (Does anyone here really need me to repeat my superhero-S&M link?) The Atom as a superhero specialized in, well, shrinking; he goes bad and becomes the comic book killer of the year. (And for a TV parallel, back on VOYAGER Kes’s power as a member of the crew was to sense stuff; when she returned for revenge, she was destroying walls as she walked by.)

There must be something to the power of the dark side…

  10. You had to do it. The answer to the Ned/Kim question. As a good conservative reading your site, I should have seen it coming.

Leaving aside such minor issues as morality plays, I thought the story was very well written. I did see the big reveal at the end coming, at least in its main thrust (no pun intended). But I think you meant for me to.

The evolution (ok, pun intended) of Jamie’s powers was great. I am sure there will be more questions about this than there were about his duplicating his wallet to get more money. But considering Cyclops has blasts coming out of his eyesockets, Storm controls the weather, and a guy can turn himself into living steel, the development fits into the mutant world.

I am hoping this does not end with just a miniseries. Any chances it will be picked up as a monthly title?

  11. Great issue, lovin this series, nothing else to add, except:

I am hoping this does not end with just a miniseries. Any chances it will be picked up as a monthly title?

C’mon please say “Yes”. Or “Maybe”. At least not the “snowballs chance” answer.

  12. Well, now that I have read the latest issue, I can make some serious comments. I thought that the use of Jamie’s duplicative powers was very creative. I love seeing Jamie’s method of cushioning himself during his tumble. I did miss the presence of Guido, though.

The one big negative that I can think of storywise is that it pales in comparison to last weeks’s FALLEN ANGEL.

  13. Okay, just looked back at the opening pages of MadroX #3.

How did that dupe make it out of the pool quicker than coreJamie when core Jamie shoved him away from the side and yet had only just broken the surface when the dupe shoved him back under?

  14. How did that dupe make it out of the pool quicker than coreJamie when core Jamie shoved him away from the side and yet had only just broken the surface when the dupe shoved him back under?

I thought Jamie partially blacked out when he hit the bottom. Assuming the dupe was created in a fully alert state, it is very logical that he would get out first, but still be there by the edge to push Jamie back in. And the “pyschological persona” that the dupe exibited fits what Jamie was thinking about himself at the time. So for me, it actually fits better than if the dupe had been left there eariler when the first dupe got stabbed.

  15. Also, they were earing the same clothes – or does Jamie only own one set these days? 🙂

I was wondering the same thing. I actually was beginning to suspect that Jamie never washes that shirt with the kinda DNA / evolutionary tree thing on it. The truth is he is not really a mutant, his shirt is. Everytime it gets hit, it coughs up a clone of Jamie (which makes sense, since it is his DNA that has not been removed from the shirt for such a very long time).

  19. When I heard about this series I thought it would be good. I didn’t think it would be THIS good.

I wish it was an ongoing. I hope you at least get to do a follow-up mini. So good. Really, truly good.

  20. No, the dupe was made, and, well, look for yourself

Your link did not work for me. I will look it up when I get home from work.

  21. Of course Madrox didn’t kill Sue Digby–it was Scott Peterson!

Seriously, though, I read this issue yesterday (first one of the series I’ve checked out so far) and was suitable impressed. It didn’t quite pack the wallop of your “X-Factor” run, but it was still light years above 98% of the C-R-A-P littering today’s comic marketplace.

  22. Wasn’t this series supposed to be one of the ones where sales would determine if there were any more issues?

Is there any news on this front yet? I love the series and would like to see it continue… or pick up again since there doesn’t seem to be any previews in Marvel’s solicitations after 5.

It’s not an “ongoing that may be turned into a mini”, like Jubilee was, it’s more like Avengers/Tbolts with the possibility of an ongoing after the mini was done.

Alas, sales seem to be somewhere near toilet level…

  24. I got a question, Don’t dupes have the same ability to multiply as the core? Because…well, look at the chain of dupes that was created in this issue with the big fall Jamie experienced. I’m just thinking that if the self loathing dupe really was the one to push Core Jamie under the water, that when the core broke the dupes fingers, wouldn’t that have made the dupe….um, dupe?

  25. Oh yes, and I was completly disgusted with the big reveal in IC….I think they did that just to make people feel bad for Wally West…what a crock, period.

  26. the problem with waiting too long between visits to the local dealer is that the hold pile builds up. I normally read PAD last to savor him more, but I couldn’t read both Madrox and Fallen Angel last. (Unless I had been able to dupe myself….) I ended up reading Madrox second to last. Both were good, but I do think I made the proper choice.

Ðámņ, that was a beautiful ending to FA. It’s a shame we need to wait til March for #19. But at least there will be a #19.

Oh…this is the Madrox thread, sorry. Like the person above said, I want to see more of Rahne too.

  27. “I actually was beginning to suspect that Jamie never washes that shirt with the kinda DNA / evolutionary tree thing on it.”

If the series continues, I’ll do a scene that shows Jamie is like Einstein: He’s got a closetful of the exact same outfit. Remember, Jamie sucks at making decisions, which is why he’s got the dupes off doing all different things. So I figure that deciding what to wear any given day is simply something he doesn’t want to have to deal with. So he’s just got the same shirt and jeans.

There goes Jim’s theory that it’s the shirt that actually has the power. Unless…it duplicated itself!

  29. Hey, just a quick comment. I’m loving the Madrox mini-series. Excellent writing by Mr. David (his X-Factor stint is what first introduced me to his work – that and Spiderman 2099). And the artwork is outstanding – sharp, great expressions, and realisitc characters. What else has Pablo Raimondi done?

Anywho, what can we do to keep this series going?

  30. Fabulous issue. I read it last night and really like the way the story played out. Very accessible and fun. Can’t wait for the next issue.

    Good job.

  31. I’ve really been enjoying Madrox. I wasn’t going to pick it up originally, because I was already burned out on the zillion or so X-series, but I went ahead and bought the first issue on the strength of PD’s name and Strong Guy’s precense.

Add my name to those calling for an ongoing, or at least another mini-series.

I liked the reveal at the end, Rahne’s “oops” moment, and the cowardly dupe in the fire.

  32. uhhh, huh?

    Atom went bad?

IC (what’s that) reveal was to make us feel sorry for Wally? How?

    Who killed Sue Dibney?

AAAAHHHH! I can’t afford comics anymore! What’s going on????!!!! (I know, I know, you pays yer dues you get yer news… but I CAN’T!)

  33. Wait, I thought Atom went all sword-and-sorcery, or went teenage, or . . . jeez, that little guy just can’t catch a break. They left Doll Man more dignity, and he wore a cape and hot pants.

  34. Madrox #4 was this week? Whoops. Guess my store will have it next week, then…
Identity Crisis #7’s big reveal caught me completely off guard. I was right about who it wasn’t, but the explanation of who it was and how it happened wasn’t what I expected at all (how’s that for a spoiler-free response?). I do think that I might have suspected something like it IF my recollection of how someone’s powers worked wasn’t tied to the way they worked up until sometime in the last ten years.

I think it’s important to distinguish between “sales” and “orders.”

Are orders unimpressive? Yup. Then again, what did you expect? A third tier mutant character starring in a limited series that received little-to-no promotion, penciled by a superb-yet unheralded artist and written by someone who is not new, hot, or British. Yes, those who know my work or Pablo’s could expect quality, but a promise of quality simply doesn’t factor into the ordering process.

Sales, however, are a different matter. I noticed this entry on a blog from the “Precocious Curmudgeon”:

“Speaking of quantity issues, the local shopkeep was grumbling about how lots of people want to try Madrox, but that he can’t get his hands on copies of the earlier issues to accommodate them. But why would Marvel put out a second printing to boost sales of an interesting book with growing buzz when they can slap a variant cover on New Avengers#1?”

I’ll tell you one thing: I haven’t seen any numbers on it, have no idea what the draws are going to be like, but I’d be willing to bet that orders on”Hulk #77″ are going to be conservative at best. The fact that “Hulk: The End” blew out of the stores at numbers that were near to Bruce Jone’s run but at twice the price will be seen, I think, as a mere fluke. I very much suspect that if fans are assuming they’ll just be able to walk in and pick up “Hulk” off the stands, they may well be in for a surprise. I’m betting that for the most part, the fans of Bruce Jones’ work will pick it up just to see what I’m doing, the people who got bored with Bruce’s work will come back to check it out, and those people who stopped buying the Hulk years ago back when I left, if they’re still buying comics, will buy it. And my guess is that retailers won’t be ready for it. And that’s orders, not sales.

Would a degree of returnability help to overcome these ordering patterns? If so, what sort of returnability do you think would be feasible for Marvel to do?

  39. I love this book. I really hope it continues as a regular series. Regardless of what happens, this book is a pure joy to read. The writing is very fresh, and I love the direction the story is taking us.

  40. I loved this issue and was genially shocked at the ending. In rereading the first issues it should have been obvious who the mastermind was but dámņ it if I wasn

  42. Dear PAD:
On the topic of unknown artists, how is it that you always work with incredible artists? One of the things I love about your books is that you team with people that truly blend story telling and art, but I love the fact the artists start as relative unknowns. I’ve always thought you had a hand in this, or at least your script/layout/description makes for establishing fabulous artists. This is one of your defining characteristics to me, as much as the humour and good stories. I can always count on an awesome collaboration.
Congratulations. Looking forward to the next issues of Madrox and Hulk.

  43. Okay, I have been out of comics a long time. Peter David’s not a hot writer? …he defined “hot writer” when I was reading…

  44. What’d I think? Well, I picked the first issue up on a whim. I’m not strongly hooked on the book and want more. Since there ain’t no mo’ after next issue, Madrox has been the tipping point to get me to buy the Hulk when PAD’s on it.
    Looking forward to #5,
    John
