Quick replies:
- The sidebar has been narrowed, you should be able to see it in most screen resolutions.
- Bold and Italics can be done using HTML– <b>bold</b> and <i>italic</i>, respectively.
- Yes, you can use a fake email, I suppose. But when we put in the “View all comments by this person” part, it will be checking by the same email address. So be warned– multiple emails will make it harder for people to look up your comments.
We also reserve the right to put in a more secure system which would require a real email address, should we start getting idiots back. - The link to my blog has been fixed. My fault, not Peter’s.
Any other comments?

“Any other comments?”
Alright, you asked for it.
Monkeys. Lot’s of monkeys doing…stuff.
Sorry, couldn’t resist, I’m tired.

Sorry, but I’m still not seeing the right hand menu at 800×600 resolution.
As a matter of fact, “b” and “i” are deprecated… but who cares ? 🙂
> As a matter of fact, “b” and “i” are deprecated… but who cares ? 🙂
Well, <span style=”font-weight:bold; font-style:italic>…</span> is just a touch clunky for everyday use 🙂 Wastes bandwidth :o)
Does strike out work?
Big?
I’m having the same problem as Michael at 800×600 resolution. The sidebar is at the bottom.
Michael and Rachel: what systems and browsers are you using?
I’m still having the sidebar problem as well. Using Internet Explorer 6.0, Windows 2000, 800×600 resolution.

Just testing there – If (in IE) the window’s narrower than 870 pixels (
Glenn,
Is there any way to get the old formatting tags back? They were WAY easier to use. When I post a lengthy reply, I write it first in Microsoft Word. One problem with tags that involve lowercase i’s is that the program automatically turns them into capitals because it thinks I’m trying to use a personal pronoun, and I have to go back and fix it constantly.
Another problem is that I have to use the shift key to use the signs. This makes MUCH less keyboard-user-friendly. The ** and // tags were WAY easier to use.
Also, when I try to use formatting on a section composed of two paragraphs (as with the post on the board below that I just made, which involved putting quoted text that I was responding to in boldface), the formatting only takes for the first paragraph, but not the second. Why is this? I had to end up putting the two paragraphs (quotes by two different people) together, making it harder for readers to discern the different authors.
Only that I’m sick of Movable Type? 🙂 🙂
Seriously, very nice formatting changes all around, Glenn, good work.
Glenn:
Windows 98 SE, IE 6.0, resolution 800×600
It doesn’t make it impossible to view the blog, mind you, but I did want to let you know the problem wasn’t fixed. Otherwise, I’m not especially bothered by it.
The other issue besides screen resolution is text size. Under IE…View…Text size
If two people have 800*600, if one person’s text size is set to small, they will naturally be able to fit more on the screen than the person’s set to medium.
My only problem is that the blue text in the sidebar can be difficult to read on a grey background.

Unfortunately with Movable Type, the old formatting tags won’t work. What version of MS Word are you using? Because on mine, if you type the tags in their exact order, “arrow-i-arrow,” Word won’t capitalize the “i” because the arrows throw it off. Maybe it’s just me because I work with HTML a lot, but once you get used to the HTML tags, formatting really isn’t that big of a deal.

All you have to do is put the formatting tags around both paragraphs, and then you can keep them both separate yet bolded, italicized, or whatever you prefer.
I am on IE 6.0, and if I shrink to 800*600 I can only fit the sidebar in if the text size is at “smallest”.

So…don’t use Word. Notepad will do just fine for what you want to do and will be faster. It won’t do any of that auto-format stuff for you.
Regarding the toolbar on the right, it is formatted to be at the bottom of the page for me as well. I don’t browse in a maximized window. Frankly, that’s fine with me since I don’t think I’d ever use it.

Just to get HTML geeky for a moment here, but the standards-compliant way of doing “italics” and “bold” is to use (for emphasis) and (for strongly-worded text). Typography terms such as “italics” and “bold” lose their meaning once you start moving away from visual browsers. Non-visual terms such as “emphasis” allow tagged text to retain their meaning when non-visual browsers are used — a spoken browser for the blind, for instance, can interpret an “emphasis” tag as meaning “change the inflection for these words”.
There’s more to the world-wide web than Internet Explorer… 😉
Aaargh, that didn’t come out right. Let’s try again:
“Just to get HTML geeky for a moment here, but the standards-compliant way of doing “italics” and “bold” is to use <em<</em< (for emphasis) and <strong></strong> (for strongly-worded text).”
Glen- now that you are so clearly linked to this site, I would wish the comments from you (ie the Harlan link) would go on your log.
Sorry- I like clicking to PADs log and reading PAD, not you.
I have no problem providing a real E-Mail address to PAD, but would prefer to be able to choose when and if I would provide such in the public forum.
Concerning putting down a URL in lieu of an E-Mail address, will searches for people be done by URL if they don’t fill in the E-Mail slot? I ask because I wouldn’t plug the same site every time I post. Since I don’t have a site of my own at present, I’d always be promoting someone else. From time to time, I might want to promote a different someone else. So, would varying URLs be a problem?

Correction. I just found Notepad right now, but it doesn’t provide Spell or Grammar Check.

Or you could put the same fake every time 😉

And Robert, the example I gave (which I noticed you trimmed) certainly wasn’t depriciated. But the tendency is to depreciate all HTML-formatting tags (including <strong> and <em> as well as <b> and <i>) in favour of style-sheeting (Which I used). And as far as I know (and I freely admit I could be wrong, my knowledge here is less than comphrensive), strong & em have no CSS equivalents.
And to make it clear, that 870
Just testing!
We continue to tweak, but the management cannot be held responsible for individual browser settings. We’re doing the best we can here.
Patrick: for the most part, I’m going to be keeping my postings to the main page down, with the major exceptions of topics of significant interest to PAD.net readers, BIDs (which are Peter’s anyway), and the occasional beg for mo– er, never mind.
Glenn,
As far as I am concerned, this is your site, too. You’ve posted things many times on the occasions that PAD hasn’t had time and I appreciate having a new post on the main page on an almost daily basis. With all the work you do around here, I have no problem seeing your posts sometimes.
Aw, shucks, ma’am; tweren’t nothing.
Btw, can we get the option to resize the popup window (should we choose to do that)?
I generally just open each thread into a new tab, but what the heck…
And yes, tabbed browsing *is* the best thing since sliced bread in the world of web browsing. 🙂
Is there a way to find out what books and stuff that pad has comeing out and when?
You still have an RSS feed? I haven’t seen new updates in my reader in a while, so I just wondered.
Luigi, regarding the capitalization of the I’s … why does it matter? <i> should be the same as <I> to the interpreting web browser.
I get the sidebar at the side if I change the text size to “smallest” but then a lot of it is unreadable.

I’m running at a resolution of 800×600, Win ME and IE 6.0 and my text size in IE is set to ‘medium’ Seems to me like that’s an average setup for many viewers. I know it can be a pain to get a page to display correctly for the myriad of browsers out there, but MS IE 6.0 is used by a large majority of people, and I suspect that most people have it set to its defaults.
And as far as the email issue goes:
How about eventually requiring a free signup that gives you a username and a password that must be confirmed from your email address like on most bbs systems? That would give you a ‘real’ email address, and it would give your posters a way to automatically have their name info and preference for email address public availability saved.
I think requiring the email address is probably a good thing, but does it (or is it now) have to be publicly viewable? Could it somehow only be viewed by Glenn or Peter if the need arises? Personaly, I don’t really have a problem with having people see my address but I know others do.
Monkeys
I just did a tweak that seems to have fixed the sidebar, let me know how it works on y’all’s end.
We’re trying to avoid a pre-signup system for comments, Michael if-that-is-your-real-name, and hope not to have to implement one. The best help, BTW, will be you folks– if someone starts making a mess in the comment threads, a heads up in comments will help us squash it that much quicker.
Glenn,
It’s working now for me! Thanks for all your good work.
I don’t really mind having to provide my email address, even though if I had my choice, I wouldn’t. You get some weird email from posting it in public places. However, I am glad that this website doesn’t block certain domains from posting. A few weeks ago, I tried to register for a different forum and they wouldn’t let me because my email address is at Yahoo. They won’t allow users from any of the free email providers. Posting in that forum wasn’t worth going out and buying a new account elsewhere.
Ralf Haring: Luigi, regarding the capitalization of the I’s … why does it matter? should be the same as to the interpreting web browser.
Luigi Novi: I tested it, and apparently you’re right. The reason I assumed otherwise was because this is not the case with the formatting tags at http://www.nitcentral, where I post the most often, and was running on habit. This makes things easier here, but man is it a pain having to remember all the different formatting rules for three different sites! 🙂
Thanks again, Ralf.
Glen: Hope you didn’t think I was being too whinny. I think with the way this log displays you recent post on the sides, we’ll be able to see if you write something of intrest to us. And i’m all for seeing more BID’s. If you need help getting some typed in I am willing to help. Just E-mail me.
TO Everyone, especially Julia:
Sorry I was unable to return to the web and this blog before now, but my personal and professional lives are quite hectic at the moment.
Anyway, everything is working fine on the home PC since Glenn’s “adjustments”.
As far as any other comments… no. Just keep up the good work.
Everything from the ‘Brought to you by’ part down to the ‘Archives’ part of the right hand bar is now in its proper place, but everything below that is still at the bottom. You’re getting there buddy. 🙂
I don’t like having to make my email address public. I don’t mind sharing it with pad, but if I’m posting on a political thread I don’t really want to attract flames off group.
An exclusive only option’s all very well, but sometimes people you don’t know are worth knowing.
