“A LITTLE GETAWAY”

I’ve turned in my short story contribution to the New Frontier anthology. Entitled “A Little Getaway,” it tells the referred to, but never actually told, tale of Calhoun and Shelby’s rather disastrous honeymoon on Xenex. The anthology comes out in October/November of this year.

  1. I didn’t even know there was going to be a New Frontier Anthology. Can you tell what other stories it will be featuring.

By the way, just saw the Matrix: Reloaded and it rocks.

  2. Finally a new New Frontier book. It may not be a novel, I guess we’ll just have to live with the anthology.

Can you tell what other stories it will be featuring.

And who will be writing them??

  3. Excellent news.

I’ve missed the New Frontier cast of characters.

Peter has *2* New Frontier novels coming out around that time as well. They’re listed on my updated page of PAD’s bibliography:

And I’ll add the NF short story anthology to the list now that I know PAD’s story title.

    Way cool thanks.

  6. Hmmmm…not sure how I feel about non-PAD New Frontier. The single creative force behind it is one of the series’ strengths. But, with at least one PAD story in it, I’ll certainly be checking it out.

  7. Yeah, having interviewed Peter a couple of times over the years about his New Frontier books, I’d be very interested to hear more about how he feels regarding other writers playing in his literary sandbox so to speak. Granted, some of the characters like Shelby and Lefler already existed, but they’ve basically been his to play with for quite some time. Not to mention the original characters and universe which are entirely his. C’mon, Peter, let’s hear more about the pproject, and your input, if any. It is after all, your website.

  8. Unfortunately Psi Phi is down (also the temporary new home at the moment) or I would have copied and pasted the list of authors and bits of additional information that is already available there.

What has been told is that all the other authors except PAD are writing stories mainly featuring one NF character before he/she/s/he became a crew member of the Excalibur. The title of the anthology is “No Limits”. PAD is the editor and it has been emphasized that he stays in control of NF.

I am very much looking forward to this book and certainly not only just because of the honeymoon story PAD teased us fans with more than once :). I see these flashbacks as valuable extensions and it has been said that also the non-PAD stories are canon for the NF universe.

JMS Babylon 5 is certainly my favourite SF series on TV. He wrote the series but also allowed other authors, on occasion, to contribute. This didn`t harm B5 at all, it enriched it. PAD`s two B5 and one Crusade episode are good examples.

I think I should use this opportunity to mention the other two NF books which are also announced for October:

“Gods Above” concludes “Being Human”. Psi Phi offered the backcover text, which I also can`t copy now. But I remember the contents. It doesn`t give anything new away, which I found disappointing. Psi Phi also showed the cover: An Excalibur sword but with a TOS command Starfleet symbol on it. Keeping in mind that we find swords on PAD`s Knight novels and that Calhoun himself also has a sword (although not that one), and that Shelby once accused him of having an Arthur complex, it makes me wonder.

The third book is a hardcover, “Stone and Anvil”. As far as I know, so far no cover and no back cover text has been shown at Psi Phi. It has only been mentioned there that among other things, topic is Calhoun`s time at Starfleet Academy.

  9. Cool. Cant wait for some more new New Frontier.

I just read “Double Time” in the “Other Realities” colection for the first(through fourth) time in the last couple of days, and it made me realize how much I missed the New Frontier characters.

Its a shame that Wildstorm dropped its Trek titles (or did Paramount drop Wildstorm?).

PAD, were there more New Frontier comics in the planning stages when Wildstorm stopped making Trek comics? If the Trek comic license is ever picked up again would you be willing to do more NF comic stories?

  10. The list of authors is:

Ilsa J. Bick, Loren L. Coleman, Peter David (“A Little Getaway”), Keith R.A. DeCandido (“Revelations”), Kevin Dilmore, Craig Gibb, Allyn Gibson, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman & Lisa Sullivan, Robert Jeschonek, David Mack, Terri Osborne, Peg Robinson, Mary Scott-Wiecek, Josepha Sherman, Susan Shwartz, Dayton Ward (“Loose Ends”), Susan Wright, and Christina F. York.

The titles for the other authors haven’t been announced yet.

  11. Dammit, PAD, another book? 😛

I’m already locked in to several this summer/fall… Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger hardcover re-release/revision, Harry Potter V, the two New Frontier books, and then Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla in November. Now, this anthology.

My poor wallet. 🙁 (But, they’ll all be great books. :D)

  12. I really wish there were an “Edit” button on here. 🙁 Stupid HTML mistakes.

  13. Praise the gods and pass the ketchup! I’m ready to devour more NF!

And what about this Anthology? Who’s contributing besides yourself, M’lord PAD? I’m looking forward to it no matter what.

  15. I read about this on TrekToday.com and was pretty excited about it.

Now you need to write some Enterprise novels to see if you can make them more interesting.

  16. I haven’t said anything about my story*, mainly because it hasn’t been approved by Paramount yet– neither has anybody else’s. When it is, I’ll say some more.

But to answer some quick questions: yes, there should be a Kebron story. And a Soleta. And a Selar. And more than a few surprises. Beyond that, I defer to the editor as to what I can say.

*Okay, it’s really “our story” but most of you don’t know Lisa Sullivan because she hasn’t posted a bit that says “hi” yet and you all know me– I’m the guy who makes web pages go boom. But I couldn’t have written this story without her. Take a bow, kiddo.

  17. It should be pointed out that Peter is the editor of the anthology, so it’s not like this is being done behind his back without his imprimatur. Quite the opposite, in fact.

And the theme of the anthology is stories featuring the various characters before they joined the New Frontier crew. My story will involve Soleta, and I know that each of the “main characters” are covered (some of them twice), as well as a bunch of the minor characters.

As Glenn said, the stories are all with Paramount right now. Once it’s all approved, I’m sure there will be announcements at PsiPhi.org and at the Trek Literature board on TrekBBS.com.

  18. Can’t wait for NF to make a return to the shelves. And I just wanted to thank the three authors who are on hand to answer questions and comments, I think that authors’ input is one of the best parts of this site. So thanks, KRAD, PAD and Glenn.

  19. I have been pestering Mr D for a year…yeah, that sounds about right… for the next installment after Being Human! I am so stoked to hear that my patience (laughs at that statement), has been rewarded with two new installments in the New Frontier series! Sweet!!!

  20. GLEE! So many new PAD books this year.

So, what are the chances of one of the short stories starring the ubiquitous Meyer and Boyajian?

  21. YEAH! Many of us have been much anticipating the next offerings in NF!!

October/November? Ya mean we gotta wait that long??

  22. Zeek –

October/November is only a few months away. At most, it’s been…what, a year and a half, maybe two years, waiting for more New Frontier?

Y’wanna know a long wait? SEVEN YEARS between each of Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” books. Seven years. @_@ yikes.

  23. It’s October, actually, which will be quite a month. In addition to three New Frontier books, there will also be my installment in the miniseries The Lost Era entitled The Art of the Impossible, an omnibus edition of Greg Cox’s Q-Continuum trilogy, the fifth season of DS9 on DVD, and an S.C.E. eBook by Robert Greenberger.

BTW, in December, there will an omnibus edition of Imzadi and Triangle: Imzadi II in trade paperback that will include a new interview with our web host about the books.

  24. It’s all a conspiracy, isn’t it? Between Mr. David, Paramount, and the people who make Ramen Noodles?

(…seeing as that’s what I’ll have to eat to be able to afford all that fun stuff. Of course, I could do the sensible thing and not buy it all, as well)

  25. All the new PAD books (NF, Knight and Apropos) are belated Birthday or early Christmas presents from my husband :).

I haven`t made my mind up yet if I will get the Imzadi omnibus as well. It will probably depend on how much money I have at that time.

  26. So, what are the chances of one of the short stories starring the ubiquitous Meyer and Boyajian?

Believe it or not, I actually proposed one; “Meyer and Boyajian are Alive, Alas” which would have revealed what they were doing during the Borg Incursion, the Dominion War, and every other major occurence in the last ten years of Trek history– absolutely zippo. Oh, Meyer sprained his wrist once. He complained for a few hours because sickbay was backed up.

During their career, various and sundry things would happen to them– they go on a shuttlecraft mission that’s only supposed to last three hours, they have to make an emergency landing on an uncharted planetoid, but they are able to get the shuttlecraft working with no difficulty; they help a family that’s lost in space find their way home, etc.

And, of course, the usual philosophical discussions on whether or not there really is a Kolk’r.

  27. Oh, it got rejected? 🙁

Now, anyone who hasn’t read or seen R&G would so not get it, but for those of us who had, I suspect it would’ve been hysterical.

  28. But Glen, would you have dealt with them coming from TOS time (The Rift) to DS9 to NF?

  29. I’ve loved Soleta, McHenry and Kebron ever since they were introduced as Worfs classmates in “Worfs First Adventure”.

Any chance on seeing them team up with Worf in an academy story in the anthology?

  30. I don’t mind the wait for a new book, what kills me is that the last book ended on a cliffhanger. i hate #*@$%ing cliffhanger that make you wait 2 YEARS!!!!

Oh well, I’ll guess I’ll recompose myself and go back to waiting.

  31. But Glen, would you have dealt with them coming from TOS time (The Rift) to DS9 to NF?

Don’t forget TNG – they were on the Enterprise during Vendetta IIRC.

Sort of. Kind of. A little. Maybe.

What does R&G stand for? I’ve been wondering for years just what Meyer and Boyajian are references to, not to mention Kolker…

Questions of inspiration aside, I would suspect that the Meyer and Boyajian that served on the Enterprise NCC-1701 were ancestors of the current dynamic, yet strangely lacking in dialogue, duo.

Then again, knowing how PAD works, I wouldn’t be surprised if it IS the same two and there was some sort of temporal anomaly involved.

    Awesome. Thanx KRAD.

  35. What does R&G stand for? I’ve been wondering for years just what Meyer and Boyajian are references to, not to mention Kolker…

R&G refers to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

Meyer and Boyajian are the extras of the PAD novels. Need someone to fill in at conn? Guard the bridge? They’re probably your men, but no one knows since I think the last time one of them spoke was in Strike Zone.

  36. Actually, Boyajian had plenty of lines in the third and fourth NF books, as he was filling in at tactical on the Excalibur while Kebron and Si Cwan were developing their lifelong hatred on the shuttlecraft and in a Thallonian dungeon.

  37. But Glenn, would you have dealt with them coming from TOS time (The Rift) to DS9 to NF?

    Quite well, thank you.

Heck, that wasn’t even the most challenging proposal I had in for tying characters from disparate places together– I had one where the Makkusian leader deal with a scientist from the Genesis Project from Genesis Wave and the CMO from the alternate future NCC-1701-F from Imzadi.

  38. R&G refers to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

I realized that was probably the inspiration for the proposed title of the M&B short story about five minutes after I posted. I was hoping that I’d finally have the answer to the mystery of where they came from. Silly me… 😛

Actually, Boyajian had plenty of lines in the third and fourth NF books, as he was filling in at tactical on the Excalibur

Been a while since I re-read NF. Thanks for the reminder.

Just a random thought, but would it be waaayyyy too cheesy to have Apropos show up as a holodeck program at some point? Naaaaahhhh…

  39. Jarissa:

As a long standing Hamlet fan, I was aware of that fact. I think one of my earlier questions was misread, leading to the misconseption that I didn’t know who any of the characters in question are. The only question I’ve had are just what the inspiration behind Meyer and Boyajian has been for all these years.

  40. Regarding this sure-to-be-great anthology dealy,

tee hee, who I can’t wait to hear about is Janos! Where would the Excalibur be without their kick-ášš Mugato security guy!? Where would the good people of that planet-whose-name-I-can’t-remember be if he hadn’t thwapped that Redeemer upside the head in NF 8?

I’ll love hearing about the rest too 🙂 but go Janos go!
