I was so involved with tending to Caroline yesterday that I missed the Mets opening day game…a game that such stalwarts as Bob Greenberger were attending, and I’d missed somehow the e-mails they’d sent me asking me if I wanted to go with them. So I was *really* annoyed with myself.
I tuned into MSG late and they were talking about the game, but they weren’t putting up the score. Then they posted the stats on Glavine. I took one look at his ERA–12.73–and thought, “Oy, THIS can’t be good.”
15-2. The most runs the Cubs have gotten on opening day since ’99…1899.
Oy.

We caught the tail end of the Cardinals-Brewers game at a pizza parlor. When Rolen hit his home run the manager started yelling and doing a dance behind the counter. I kept hoping the Cards wouldn’t do anything while he was preparing our order because there’d be no telling what we got.
It was one helluva game, though.
BTW–The Mets are *still* pond scum.

The Cubs doing well? Isn’t that one of the signs of the apocalypse?
Well, it was just one game…
It may be overly optimistic after only one game, but I think that the Devil Rays….under the guidance of Lou Pinella….could borrow and paraphrase your proposed slogan for the re-vamped New Universe: “The Tampa Bay Devil Rays. We Don’t Suck Anymore.”!

Oh, wait a second.. I think the Cubs just scored another run.
Heh. Who cares if it’s just one game? Cubs won. That’s all that matters.
Go Cubs!
All right! I don’t like the Mets, and the Cubs are my favorites! Go Cubbies! Holy Cow!
Go Cubs, Go! Go Cubs, Go! I know it’s only one game, but it’s the HATED METS!!! Whoo Hoo!

Hey, it was worse for the Red Sox. Not only did they lose to the Tampa Bay Second Team Up Against The Wall When Contraction Comes, but they wasted an excellent 7 innings by Pedro.
And how about the Dodgers/Diamondbacks game? A complete game four-hit shutout on opening day, and it wasn’t Randy Johnson who threw it, but rather Hideo Nomo. If Brown and Dreifort can stay healthy, a rotation with them, Nomo, Ishii and Perez will be very formidable.
My Expos looked great (even without Vladdy) by thumping Glavine’s ex-mate Maddux for 4 runs in the first.
I can’t remember the last time so many perennial underdogs (Pirates, Rays, KC, Expos, anyone vs. Big Unit) won on opening day.
Gotta jump in with all the boosters here — you missed a great game, Peter (if you’re a Chicago boy like me, anyhow!). Ah well, at least your Mets weren’t too embarassed. Oh, wait a second, yes they were!
Cubs, woo!!!
Richard Howe: The Cubs doing well? Isn’t that one of the signs of the apocalypse?
Nah, one of the charming traits of the Cubbies is their ability to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory; they regularly start a season well, only to plummet about midway through the year.
That bein’ said, I’m telling you: With Dusty Baker at the helm, this is our year! It’s not just a chance, it’s our Dust-iny! (heh)
If Marvel and DC both wanted you for the annual inter-company softball classic*, what team would you play on, PAD? =D
*…do they even hold that any more?
Ah, you Cubbies fans. You’re so endearing in your hope that someday you’ll actually finish on top of the division. But that’s okay…the Cardinals will return you to reality soon enough. 🙂

How about them Phils! I’m now glad we didn’t get Glavine!
Feh – the Cubs will do better, to the tune of only losing 80 games, as they watch my White Sox make the postseason.
That said, much better playing by Sosa yesterday. Took his walks and didn’t do his usual swing for the fences act; nice single, too.

Don’t you need to score some runs to win games?
(Yeah, I know I’ll eventually pay for that comment, but had to say it! heh-heh)
Beleive me, Peter, you didn’t miss much. Hope the Mets do better tomorrow, cause they’re not playing today.
By the way, it appears to me you people aren’t getting it. I *want* you to read my column at http://www.comicsnet.vze.com. I’m not plugging my column for just my health but, the site’s as well. I’m not writing this column for my health either. *Read* “Shut Up, Chuck!” or I’m going to your house to tear up your X-Men! 🙂
No, the true sign of the apocalypse are the words “And now, the first pitch of the first game of this World Series between the Cubs and the Red Sox.”
There was a game yesterday? The Mets, there’re a football team right? 🙂
Speaking of NL Central teams, I got in my car after work last night to catch the end of the Pirate game. Pirates won 10-1 over the Cardinals. The NL Central race might be a really tight one this year.
Sorry, I made a mistake. I meant that the Pirates played the Reds. They still won 10-1.
Yeah, say, how ’bout those Cards? 😉
I’m a Cub fan, so it was a great day for me yesterday. I was surprised (though I shouldn’t have been) at home quickly the fans at Shea booed Glavine. I guess he did have a pretty bad first inning.
The Cubs scored runs yesterday like they get the numbers in at the turnstiles…the same was true for the White Sox. 🙂
I grew up a Met fan and still follow them while living 1,600 miles away. Not only did they find a new way to shoot themselves in the foot yesterday, but as usual, they did it on national tv. They will have a good year, just until the playoffs.
Good one, Rich. 🙂
Glavine…Ha ha ha ha ha!
Sorry. Bitter Braves fan here.
Geeze People Cubs fans making fun of Mets fans.
Baseball season ends in October not April.
BTW Cubs will be 15 gamesout by June.
Cardinals fans are bitter cause the Mets kicked their butts in 2000 and laughed at their rookie pitcher.
And I’m suprised the Braves still got fans.
I meant still have, but you get my meaning.
Even though I am definitely not a Mets fan, I will say this: I’m sorry your team got it’s collective rear end kicked so very mightily, Mr. David. I know the horrid, leaden, bile-raising feeling of watching your team lose a game by five thousand miles when they should have at least put up a fight. Ugh.
(I shall refrain from gloating about my particular team’s spectacular performance over the past two days in spite of certain unfortunate events, as that would be very rude indeed!)
Better luck as the season progresses, Mr. Mets Fan.
Gak! Glaring typo I cannot correct! I hate those. I can’t believe I didn’t catch it.
Oh! how upsetting! wince grimace
Please substitute “its” for “it’s” in the second line of the above comment. Thank you.
I don’t know about the Cubs being 15 games out by June. They have as good a chance winning the NL Central as do the Pirates, Reds, or Cardinals.
Now, getting past the first round, that’s the question.
One saying sticks in my mind. It’s a general saying but it seems to have a resonance with baseball. “Hope springs eternal.”
So I’ll hope that the Cubs will be 15 games out and that the Pirates will have it clinched.
