I wasn’t at comic con Saturday because I was cheering on Ariel and her Varsity bowling team at the County finals in Long Island. The top eight girls bowling teams in Suffolk County were competing. And for the first time in years, her team won the finals. Ariel herself finished eighth in the field of competitors. Having won Counties, they will next be bowling in the Statewide championship in Rochester the first weekend of March.

Congrats to Ariel and her teammates! Good luck in the State championship!
QAPLA, ARIEL!
You are a man who definitely has his priorities straight, as well as being a crackerjack writer.
Congrats Ariel!
Congratulations, Ariel! And good luck in March. I’m sure you’ll do well.
I assume the finals are in Rochester, N.Y. (as opposed to Rochester, Minn.). I live in suburb of Rochester, N.Y. and I hope you enjoy your stay in our area. Rochester is no NYC, but there’s fun to be had if you know where to look.
Again, congrats and good luck to Ariel.
Grats!
Knock ’em dead at Statewide with a 300 game 🙂
WOOT!
Awesome work — great news!
Congratulations, Ariel! Whatever the equivalent phrase for “good luck” is in bowling lingo is what I wish you for the state championship.
Way to go Ariel and team!! Gogogogo!!! You can do eeet!!
Hmmm. Ariel= I Earl. I always thought that Ariel was named after the Littlest Mermaid, but perhaps she was really named after Earl Anthony?
Good luck.
Go Ariel! Woot!
Kudos! (Because a single kudo isn’t enough for this achievement.)
Congratulations Ariel! And good show on you part, PAD, being there. You probably think that’s a strange thing to be congratulated on, that any father would be there. You’d be, sorry to say, wrong.

Yayz! Congratulations to Ariel!
Go, Ariel, Go!! Congratulations!
Good on ya, Ariel!!!!
hey welcome to Rochester! I think its a great place to live/work and I hope you enjoy your stay!!!!
Hey, Bill, I also live in Rochester, NY.
I’m a Greecer myself.
I wonder where they play…a handful of lanes have shut down over the years and the ones I know of aren’t that great in quality.
Czar, I grew up in Greece. Graduated from Greece Olympia HS. Please don’t tell me you went to Greece Athena. That would make us enemies. 😉
As for the lanes, I believe Clover Lanes on Monroe Ave. is still around. I think I played there once (badly). Also, there’s an AMF near me that I believe is still in business.
Congrats! As a former HS writer for Newsday, I covered a few of the county championships in the early 90s. Did it get written up?
Good job, Ariel!

It was written up, although astoundingly sportswriter Gregg Serra made no mention of them in his “Big 10” list of Long Island teams, even though he has relentlessly boosted the East Islip Girls Bowling team…the team that Ariel’s team beat two games out of three in Counties. The previous week he listed EI as #1 and wondered, “Can anyone beat them?” Ariel’s team did…and no mention.

Bill–
No, I was lucky enough to go to Arcadia despite being closer in mileage to Athena. I don’t know how it is now, being 10 years removed, but I’m pretty sure none of the High Schools liked Athena all that much.
Maiden Lanes on Mt Read and Maiden shut down a couple years ago which was a shame because I grew up bowling there.
I think clover lanes and bowl a roll are the best neighborhood bowling alleys — Olympic bowl was also quite good, but I think they’ve shut down for good about a year ago.
PAD if your going to be spending more than a day in Rochester there are some places that are must see in our little city (I’m sure my fellow Rochesterians will agree):
Strong Museum of Play — http://www.museumofplay.org
The worlds largest museum dedicated to children and play — also features the national toy hall of fame. Everything is a hands on for kids to have fun and play!
The Susan B. Anthony House — http://www.susanbanthonyhouse.org
More of a traditional museum experience at the house where Susan B. Anthony, the woman who spent her life getting women the right to vote, lived, got arrested and died.
Eastman House — http://www.eastmanhouse.org
Home of George Eastman – the creator of Kodak. The house is a museum and features an adjoining photography gallery and movie theatre. I never felt so excited to watch a movie than when i went there.
States will be at the AMF Gates Bowl.

Ah, I worked with Gregg. Nuff said about that!
PAD, the AMF Gates Bowl isn’t very far from me. Is the event open to the general public, or is seating limited to friends/family of the competitors? If it’s the former, perhaps I could swing by and add my voice to those rooting for Ariel.
Czar, it’s truly a bummer that Maiden Lanes shut down. That was just a stone’s throw from my high school.
jason, am I crazy or was Olympic Bowl part of Olympic Park? I seem to remember them having go-karts and other attractions in addition to bowling lanes. I think my friends took me there for the first leg of my 21st birthday celebration, with the other two legs being going out drinking and then going to an establishment I’d rather not discuss here (or anywhere else for that matter). My fondest memories of that day were of racing go-karts, and I thought that took place at Olympic Park.
Bill–I assume it’s open to all. You can always call them and ask.
