RIP Steve Gerber

A brilliant writer and talent, an entertaining dinner companion, and an all around great guy.

He will be missed.

  1. Since Fraser commented that HTD never contributed any lasting catch phrases to the lexicon, I guess he doesn’t still use the term “blanderize” as a synonym for adulterate or dilute. (I also refer to fast forwarding through commercials as “blipverting” – remember Max Headroom?)

  2. No, I’ve never used blanderize in any way shape or form. I have worked “blipvert” into a conversation or two.

Most of my friends IN the seventies who liked the Pythons missed the Debbie Reynolds reference–I think i caught it because my family watched the Debbie Reynolds show and PBS picked up the Pythons in my area not long after.

  3. I’d also like to put a word for French colorist Stéphane Peru who died of a heart attack the same day Steve Gerber did. His recent work includes Ultimate XMen, Teen Titans Year One, Iron Man. He was 26, and a very talented guy.

  4. I remember meeting Steve Gerber at a convention in Phila a few years back, where we were both guests. I was still green around the gills, and just flustered when I was introduced to him, one of my favorite writers, and could only blurt out..”Steve, thank you for Howard the Duck!!!”
To which he replied, “You’re welcome! Now just who the f**k are you…?”

    Ah, what a guy.
