Beauty is only skin deep…but really, who needs a sexy kidney?

Investigations are apace into the blackmailing of Miss New Jersey, Amy Palumbo. When one is dealing with a scheme designed to make a beauty queen give up her crown, the obvious culprit (at least insofar as the inevitable episode of “Law and Order” will play it) would be the runner up, and that’s where police investigations are now turned. Personally, if I were a cop, I wouldn’t be grilling the runner up; I’d be talking to her friends and boyfriends. This whole thing has the stink of some chowderheaded guy who thinks he’s doing his girl friend or girlfriend a favor by setting up a situation so that she can take over the crown. Apparently the saga of a skater named Ms. Harding didn’t leave an impression as to how such schemes typically turn out.

I very much suspect that Ms. Palumbo will not be forced to resign. Why let the terrorists win? However, if she were, it wouldn’t be the worst fate. Quick, name the Miss America some years back who was forced to resign in disgrace. Right: Vanessa Williams. Now, just as quick, name the woman who took over the crown in her place. Ummm….

  1. This is the lamest “blackmail” attempt I’ve ever heard of. Depending on what story you read, they’re either normal photos of her that are photoshopped, or the blackmailers added captions to the photos.

  2. “Beauty is only skin deep…but really, who needs a sexy kidney?”

Maybe if you want to attract a nefrologist.

  3. A: Suzanne Charles, the 2nd African-American Miss America.

As for Ms Williams, I think she’s doing pretty well these days (when are the Emmy nods coming out?)

  4. As to Tonya Harding, i suspect that she may have known a bit moe about her boyfriend’s actions than she let on – considering that TIME Magazine came as close as its legal staff would let it to saying that she had cheated in competition, i suspect she was one of those “win at any cost, even if you’re not good enough” types.

Suzette Charles and no, I didn’t Google it and I knew it before I read the earlier postings.

Either it was the wildest of coincidences that the winner AND the runner-up were BOTH African-Americans or the Miss America Committee were hedging their bets in case Vanessa had to lose their crowns. Interesting….

  6. ‘Law & Order’ normally has a twist or ten even with them using the usual suspects in a story. For example, their twist to the Nancy Keegan(sp?)/Tonya Harding story was that ‘Nancy’ had asked her best friend ‘Tonya’ to injure her so she could get off the media-go-round that a top athlete these days has to ride to stay on top, because she wanted a normal life back instead of the life her (‘Nancy’s’) father had insisted she lead up to that point.

If/when L&O does an episode on this paticular beauty queen scandal, expect the culprit to be the queen’s jealous sibling, who’s always wanted to be the star but nobody ever paid attention to. . . .
