So I was at a podiatrist’s today, dealing with Ariel having an ingrown toenail. And out of curiosity, I asked, “So what are Schilling’s chances tonight?”
He shook his head and laughed. “Non-existent. There’s no way. A shoe isn’t going to do it. He needs surgery.” He then proceeded to describe the flapping piece of meat that was once the Red Sox ace’s tendon. “If he makes it out of the second inning, it’ll be a miracle,” he said.
Which means that the Sox have exactly one shot: Get to the Yankees’ starter early, knock him out of the game, and then have it boil down to a duel of two exhausted bullpens.
Can the Red Sox really pull out two miracles in the Bronx? I really don’t know. Common sense and history both say no freakin’ way. I predicted the Sox in five. Obviously that’s not happening. But just dwell on this:
Can you imagine if the Yankees wind up owning not one, but two records of futility? Not only do they have that monumental 22-0 loss under their belts, but just think how amazing it would be if, in the same season, they became the first team in the history of baseball to be up 3-0 in a best-of-seven contest and lose. Steinbrenner would wind up looking like that poster from “Scanners.”

but after looking at the replay, he can not honestly say he didn’t go out of the running motion to knock the ball away.
But Rodriguez didn’t say that, yet did say something to the effect that “if the umps get together to discuss something, it’s going to go against the Yankees”.
He also commented saying he should’ve run Arroyo over, which Arroyo certainly had the right to be in his way when he’s trying to make the tag.
But, boy, that’s sportsmanship on Rodriguez’s part, eh?
Of course, the breathless “first time in HISTORY” stuff ignores the fact that they’ve only had seven game pennant races for a relatively short time (i.e. when I listened to the Brewers win the ALCS in 1980 on my little transistor radio while camping out in the back yard, it was still best of 5)
Umm, the seven game series dates back a very long time for the World Series, iirc.
It doesn’t matter if it’s pennant or World series though – this is only the third time in North American sports history a team has come back from being down 3-0, and forced a game seven.
Fine, fine. The only talk I’d seen was that it was the first pennant race to do it, no one was invoking World Series on the news stuff I saw.
Actually, the 0-3 comeback has never been done in basketball; only twice (in 1942 and 1975) in the NHL. and while i’m not sure about ’75 – it was a quarterfinal series and i can’t find the record – Toronto won all four in ’42 to take the Stanley Cup.
of course, if Boston *does* take it and Houston wins today too, i’ll at least be a little happy regardless of who wins the Series….
The “first team in MLB history” to ever come back from 2-0 and 3-1 to win out were my Royals, in 1985. Twice. Did it to Toronto in the ALCS, and then the Cards. It’s nice to see that Boston is the first team to top that feat — and especially sweet to see’em do it against New York. 😉

Man, Boston is pouring it on tonight. Up 8-1 right now… of course this could be a setup for the biggest blunder of all, losing game 7 after a huge lead.
jeff
Well if they send Pedro back out for the 8th it certainly will be a huge blunder.
Boston 10, Yankees 3
After 18 years, the Red Sox are back in the World Series.
One more chance to smite forever the curse of the Bambino.

From my blog after the end of inning 2:
You know you’re a Red Sox fan if…
The Sox are up 6-0 after just two innings with no opposing player having even gotten on base, they’re up against their most hated rivals, and if they win they pull off one of the biggest series comebacks of all time, and the biggest in baseball history.
And your gut reaction is “This is all just setup for a real heartbreaker”.
What a sweet victory for the Red Sox. Now, though I will be rooting for St. Louis or the Astros.

LIFE IS GOOD IN NEW ENGLAND THIS YEAR!!!!!! Sometimes it hurts to be a Red Sox fan and other times it’s pure elation. Kudos to Torre for exuding class in his time at the podium.
Maybe there’s something to Franconers rocking motion in the dugout?
The TEAM OF DESTINY!!
I like the ring of it more and more.
This is the year the curse will be conquered, and more power to them!
Now that the series is over between the Yankees and Sox…
Does anybody else think that Buck sounded a little biased? I mean, sure, Fox is probably glad that both series are going 7 games, but this “curse” stupidity is borne mostly by the media, not the fans.
And imo, Joe Buck (McCarver is an idiot) just didn’t seem to have any emotion whatsoever when the Red Sox played well, compared to having some emotion for the Yankees.
So, Yankees winning was what the media wanted – so they could talk about that stupid curse for another year.
