Went into the city today to the Marvel offices. Met with Andy Schmidt to discuss future plans for “Captain Marvel” beyond issue #25…not just the stories themselves, but also ways of promoting them. I have fairly demented notions and we’re waiting to see if we get them approved. Should know within a few days.

Also had a lengthy meeting with Joe Q. to discuss storylines and directions for one of the two major projects I have in the hopper for Marvel. This one in particular ideally will launch late summer of this year. Should be able to discuss it in a month or so.

Sorry to be so secretive, but I just think there’s going to be a hëll of a reaction when the projects are revealed, and I want to coordinate everything with Marvel’s promotions people.

    All three of these statements have me incredibly excited. I take it from statement #2, the hatchet has been buried?

    I’ve kinda been waiting for the day I can put to bed my unwanted title of “Fan who put PAD on thin ice at Marvel…”

Perhaps a revisitation of DC vs. Marvel (since you co-wrote it anyway) featuring some of the minor characters interacting with one another (such as Speedball and Impulse — that would be a fantastic team-up, and it would let us forget Geoff Johns’s dreadful handling of the character) might be in order, if it’s not already among said projects — the fact that you didn’t mention DC doesn’t mean DC isn’t involved…

  6. I did have a question that is rather unrelated. I became a fan of your work through your run on Aquaman. I felt that you took a character who lacked anything solid and placed him in one of the more layered and engaging worlds I’ve read in the funny books. An empty blonde cliche became a king who would battle with gods.

    I won’t say my opinions on the Larsen or Jurgens runs that followed, but I am curius on what your feelings are about where the character is now. Crew-cut, clean shaven, water hand, orange shirt, dethronement and all.

    Like I said, I understand that this question is unrelated and its understood if you pass it by. Just curious.

  8. For the record, Novice, there’s a link to Peter’s e-mail address in the upper-right corner of the blog (almost on the very top of the light grey bar). Non-sequiturs are often best sent directly to him (don’t get me wrong; I’m curious what his answer to your question is — if only slightly). Historically, I’ve always gotten a response to a polite, succinct e-mail — just keep in mind that moderation is ideal. I’m sure you’ll hear it again before this thread ends, but I thought you should know.

  9. I’m hoping it’ll be allowed to be faithful to continuity, something that most Marvel books these days, particularly the X-Men(and sadly, even the Hulk)aren’t doing. I’m hoping that the coming year will feature an effort to restabilize some of this, and not continue to give the image or impression that the X-books are the most abused and neglected franchise in the MCU.

  10. Honestly, the secrecy doesn’t hurt a thing… it just gives us something to chew on, and wonder how big an impact the news will make once you can announce it. 🙂

  11. Personally, I think they should let Peter do an out of continuity Marvel special similar to the Fred Hembeck destroys the Marvel Universe or Sergio Aragones Massacres Marvel. (The Aragones one being one of the few Marvel books that I bought at the stands in the later half of the 90s.)

  12. I know, it is not fair to you, but comics are a combination of story AND art and that means, if the art is getting bad, at least my interest in the comic suffers, even if it is well written.

    Captain Marvel has reached that point with me now where I feel torn. I want to support Captain Marvel because I like your writing but the art is, IMO, getting dreadful! It puts me off so much now that I have trouble to look past it and enjoy the comic nevertheless.

    By the way, this is one of the reasons why I am hardly buying Marvel comics any more. When I compare my older Marvels with what I am getting today, the differences are obvious.

  13. I’m going to hold out hope it’s a revival of Spider-Man 2099.

    When I was 16, almost 17, I decided I’d give comics a spin again. I wanted to start off with a new title. Given my obsessiveness, I knew I’d go nuts trying to back issue an ongoing if I started on one. And then I looked on the new rack , and saw Spider-Man 2099 #1. I thought “that looks interesting,” bought it, and really enjoyed it. I picked up the other 2099 books as well (Doom was great, others were ehh, and I was back reading comics again.

    A few weeks later, I started to wonder if this Peter David Guy was the same one who had written severalof my favorite Star Trek books.

    A big-name project and something we wouldn’t expect from PAD?

    Aren’t there some vacancies in the mutant office?

    I’m wagering PAD’s gonna write a core X-MEN book, either NEW X-MEN (where Joss Whedon hasn’t been officially confirmed yet and rumors have him at least a year away from starting, anyway) or X-TREME X-MEN.

    Actually, I think PAD will start writing a new book after Whedon has been with X-Men for about a year and then take all of those ideas and pass them off as his own…;)

    I can’t see it being an X-Men book unless the politics of writing in the X-office have been cleaned up. I don’t think Peter had an especially good experience with X-Factor…

  24. I hope Marvel approves your new demented notions for Captain Marvel, as I have greatly enjoyed the demented notions in this series so far.

    (By the way, what does the PSR rating on the cover of CM and various other Marvel books stand for? Given the cover price, I had assumed it stood for “Please Stop Reading,” but now it looks like Marvel actually does want to continue publishing some of these titles so I’m curious if there is some other way of interpreting those letters?)

    The “secret” new project sounds great, even though it’s no longer a secret. MadeItUp.com broke the story several days ago:

    “The success of the recent Marvel MAX Supreme Power series has led Marvel to plan several spin-off series. One of the first will be Hyperion Girl.

    ‘We approached Peter David and asked if he’d be interested in writing it, since he had previously written some well-received stories about a young heroine,’ said an unnamed Marvel editor-in-chief who asked not to be quoted. “Hyperion Girl is a completely original character, unlike anything we’ve ever done before. I don’t want to reveal too many of the surprises, but here’s one that I think will just blow fans away: it turns out she is Hyperion’s previously unrevealed cousin, who through some incredible twists of fate has wound up on Earth as well!

    My idea would be a series about Hector, Prometheus and Atlanta post Pantheon.

    But that’s me. I got a thing for obscure characters.

  30. I believe PSR stands for “Parental Supervision Recommended.” (Or something like that.) If Marvel’s going to use obscure abbreviations like that, the least they could do is give out posters explaining them like you see at movie theaters…

    The more he’s restored to what he was, the more there are sighs of relief from all but the hard-core Aquafans, because it means the rest of the world can go back to ignoring him.

    With the recent Captain Marvel developments, I’m hoping it’s a company wide mini-series explaining/setting up the multiverse in the wake of 1602, so we can explain away all the continuity discrepancies.

    Although, it would be a cool to see a revival of 2099 or New Universe again 😉

  35. I hope your new project is the Marlo Marvel series drawn by Chriscross staring Marlo and Captain Marvel’s sister. Marlo is of course bound to MM the way Rick is to CM. 🙂 Or are you the new writer of New X-Men?

  36. Well since Hulk is moving to Marvel Knights, I think Marvel owes us a mainstream Marvel universe Hulk title… It could start with Banner waking up after four years or however long it’s actually been of a bad dream… Or was that already done in a Hulk related title?

  37. I’m not worried about what Mr. D. may create. I’m more interested in his “demented” PR schemes. Tell me if I’m close on any of these.

    He’s going to bring back Captain Universe, or whatever he was – that force that “possessed” ordinary people and let them do super things, who posessed Spider-Man at one point. To publicize this, Mr. D is going to wear a Captain Universe super-suit under his regular con clothes and reveal his true identity at the panels he does. “See? Even I can be Captain Universe!”

    Better yet, Mr. D is going to team up with a filk artist (perhaps even The Great Luke Ski) and sing a song parody promoting his Marvel books. (He might even do a duet on Luke’s famous song “Peter Parker.” That’s assuming Mr. D can get his rap chopus up to speed.)

    And no kidding. I embarassed Mr. D into singing his Marrying Sam song “Jubilation T. Cornpone” twice a few years ago at Dragon*Con. He should inherit the mantle of the late great Stubby Kaye as a character actor singer.

  38. A new Trek comic? Hmmmm, Captain Marvel turns out be one of the 100 changelings who happened to be infused with DNA from the Q-continuum by Zeus (Mark McHenry’s father), then shifted into the Marvel universe by the Prophets, and incubated under the warm ministrations of the Phoenix, until…

  40. How about THUNDER AGENTS? DC dropped the ball on this one. Could Marvel have picked it up? I would love to see Peter writing the adventures of Len Brown, Weed and Kitten fighting characters like the Iron Maiden.

  42. Personally, I would love to see Peter take on a team-style book. If not the X-Men, how about the Defenders? I think they got short-changed the last go-around, plus we get to see PAD write Hulk again!

  46. I’m guessing.. “Ultimate Punisher” since the main Punisher series is moving to the MAX line. Marvel probably wants a title thats more accessible to fans of the movie. PAD’s hinted it was a character he’s worked on before. Spider-man’s my second guess.

  48. Why are people gushing over PAD writing Speedball, when he should really be working on the new, ongoing, Slapstick series???

    (Seriously, I could imagine PAD writing Slapstick. Just take Spider-Man’s goofball schtick, crank it up to 11, and throw in assorted teenage-sitcom situations. Of course, PAD being PAD, that will only last until issue 5, whereupon the title takes a sharp right turn into the totally unexpected… But I digress.)

    And Ultimate Marlo gets a thumbs-up from me, too. Especially if it’s a Marvel MAX title…!

  49. How about an ongoing Juggernaut. While not completely reformed, Cain Marko has overcome his anger toward Xavier and has confronted his demons form his childhood. The character is primed to spin out of Uncanny X-Men, and I would love to see PAD write the unstoppable one.

  50. Well there goes my hopes that Peter might do as I have and swear off Marvel until they make their books readable and treat their fans with respect again.
