Remember, these may be used for the letters column (of which there was none this issue because I was spending every writing moment on the Spidey novelization and so didn’t have the time. But “Go Nuts” hasn’t vanished, don’t worry.)
So whad’ja think?

First I have to comment on the art, it seems to be getting worse with each issue. Marvel seems to be using no name artists for many of the books these days, it seemed untested artists would be used for a fill in but now a days unknowns are getting full arcs and I think the book(s) suffer. The story is Ok, I’m really tired of the “crazy” Cap and this issue seems to move along a bit better than the last few.
On the art – its not horrible, but Azaceta is a poor match with Sotomayor. I generally like the uninked look, but here it is coming off as very “muddy” – look at Elysius’ face on page 2 to see what I mean. Really needed inked.
Story – it suffers a touch from “Middleitis” – the story’s moving along but in part 2 of 4 obviously there’s no form of resolution. Still, its rattling along nicely – even if I wish I hadn’t been spoiled on that last page long ago – I suspect the issue would have packed a lot more punch if that had been a surprise. And you really have to symphasise with Rick. Who WOULDN’T have been pìššëd in that situation 🙂

And one more thing – how many Titans were on that ship? Aren’t there only meant to be something like 10 or so left between Thanos and his “clone” from Celestial Quest? And we didn’t even see Mentor
It was interesting, though the significant characters coming back from the dead or from nothingness seemed a bit much. His mother, who everyone thought was dead, and who also is able to somehow get around his cosmic awareness. Rick, though I did think the groupies funeral for him was funny. I can see his return from the dead making him bigger then Elivs over there. And the new sister at the end. I admit I don’t know much about the character’s family but I don’t remember a sister being mentioned before.
Not saying the issue was bad, but it seemed too full of some of the bad superhero cliches. That said, I have faith that you will make an interesting story out of it all, so I’ll be patient.
I liked the art. It wasn’t bad. It was different, but I thought it was good! I wish the Artist had used the “updated” look for Starfox though.
I liked the scene at Mar-Vel’s headstone. My question now is how long is his sister going to hang around? Wait! Is she the new Ms. Marvel hahaha Can’t wait for the explanation over Marv’s mother.
Disclaimers:
1) This isn’t really a comment on this issue of Captain Marvel.
2) I’m about two years behind in my comic book reading so this is hopelessly out-of-date.
3) This might belong in the inevitable Cowboy Peter’s TV Round-Up. Perhaps I’ll re-post there.
4) I apologize if someone has already brought this up.
Having said all that…
Last year, I remember PAD posting about how he always got comments about how he was stealing from Joss Whedon (esp. in regards to Supergirl) even when he had plots like Buzz falling for Supergirl before Spike fell for Buffy.
In light of that, has anyone but me noticed how closely Spike’s role in the first couple of episodes of “Angel” this season echoes Lorraine in Captain Marvel a few years back?
(As I said, I’m so out of touch… I have no idea what’s going on with the character now.)
It’s uncanny, even down to the cigarettes and leather jacket and snide comments and the character’s reactions… It struck me when I was reading in my own behind-the-times fashion and I thought, “This seems so familiar, where have I seen it before… Oh, yeah, in those ‘Angel’ episodes produced *years* after this comic!”
> I wish the Artist had used the “updated” look for Starfox though.
And I thank God he didn’t – it could have been any character – it didn’t look like Starfox.
I swear, just when PAD ties up some loose ends, more knots come undone. We finally get some resolution and explanations to recent quandries (Rick’s death, Epiphany’s whereabouts, clues to Elysius’ return) ONLY to have even more questions, more twists and turns, and more cliffhangers for the next issues! Kudos to the entire Captain Marvel team, you always manage to keep my interests peaked. Great stories, frantastic characters and settings, and visually appropriate art for each mood and setting. Keep up the great work!
As always, make mine (Captain) Marvel or don’t make it at all.

My only comment…
Phyla. Heh. Of course.
So did phyla exist in issues before this one?
This whole crazy thing is pretty good but it suffers from to much sitcomish one-line humor and not enough actual emotions. You got close in the last couple issues, once with marv realizing he could get a whole lot worse after killing his past self, and then again with him freaking out on seeing his mom.
I guess what I’m saying (and I may be wrong) is that you seem to brush off your characters just like Marv does. It doesn’t give anything for the reader to care about.
So… Would that make her his Genis-Sis?

I really enjoyed this issue. It had a lot of great twist and turns to the story. Keep up the great work.

Still haven’t read issue 16, but this was too good not to share.
He had it coming. He had it coming. He only had himself to blame. If you had been there, if you had SEEN it, I betcha you would have done the same. Pop. Six. Squish. Uh-uh. Cicero. Lipschitz.
He had it coming. He had it coming. He had it coming all along. I didn’t do it. But if I done it, how could you tell me that I was wrong?

So, that makes Marv Velma?
OT: For Family Guy Fans:

In a sign of the growing importance of DVD sales to Hollywood, 20th Century Fox is considering a plan to resume production of Family Guy, a sometimes crude animated comedy that the Fox network took off the air more than 18 months ago

*LOUD groans…* 😉
This doesn’t really belong in this thread, but I don’t know anywhere else to put it. I stopped reading Captain Marvel when its issues were somewhere in the thirties range. All of a sudden there were 3 Captain Marvel type titles and the comic was being renumbered. It didn’t understand what was happening because well… I buy my comics at a grocery store… anyway they stopped carrying it around the same time. Fate perhaps? When I did go into the comic shop in the city far far away, I did see the new number one and made the decision not to get it. What was with the green costume on the cover? I may never know. I felt jerked around because all this stuff was going on with these three Marvel titles and the last issue never prepared me for any of it. Was it a marketing thing? Was it some sort of weird creative bet? I don’t know. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. Thought I’d just let you know why you lost one reader over a year ago. Good luck, I love your stories and the way you focus on a cast and the sense of history in your comics. Let me know when you do some creator owned comics.
Merci.
It was either get restarted with a new number one as part of a sales gimmick, or be cancelled. I know which one I would pick.
Oh and BTW: PAD owns Fallen Angel, coming out by DC. In addition, he (co-?)owns Soulsearchers and Company, ask for it by name.
Dear Go Nuts,
Congrats crew on well done issue. I liked the art, the humor, the colors, and i’m assuming the editing as well. So good work all.
Finally something Genis wasn’t expecting, his mother. She’s been hiding out since the previous incarnation of the series and i’ve been wondering when he’d finally found out that she’s not dead. I wonder why he never “knew,” but i’m assuming it has to do with his never finishing his training with Moondragon. So now there’s Phyla. Well I suppose that if Titan science can do it once, whats to stop them from doing it again. Hope this “child” doesn’t go insane as well. Nice to see Eros in his old costume again as well. And a question on the Titans, are they all related then? Is Thanos then really Genis’ uncle? Well in any case looking forward to the next issue and the next bunch after that.

The ending would have worked a lot better had it not been spoiled in solicits.
Wait, lemme get this straight … Somebody groans at “Genis-sis,” but doesn’t bat an eye at clone-siblings named “Genis” and “Phyla”?
Oh, well–I guess I should be happy that this isn’t in the DC Universe–after all, we could have had a clone of Superboy (to name another superpowered product of genetic science) named “Mend-El” …
Loved it!
Thanks Peter Svensson,
I didn’t realize that PAD had any creator owned projects on the go right now. I think I’ll give Fallen Angel a try when I get into the far far away city next week. Hows does he maintain ownership of something that gets published by DC? Is it a special arrangement?
Captain Marvel 16
The Good…
The artwork was fantastic. Peter David is constantly working with top notch artists. The overall story was very good, although I do have reservations about one major plot element.
The Bad…
I have to start this sentence by saying that I absolutely love the writing style of Peter David; that being said bring Rick back from the dead (I actually loved the fact that you were not afraid to kill a major character) leaves me a little frustrated. When is death in comics ever going to be permanent. Although this does open up some interesting possiblities:
Essentially, Genis gave a piece of himself to reanimate Rick…does this mean that Rick will be able to tap some aspect of Captain Marvel’s power base. I would love to see Rick develop and or use another power to keep Genis in check.
Overall I really loved the book and I can’t wait to see the next direction you take with these characters.
By the way if you really think about Genis really isn’t insane and he did do Rick a favor by leaving him in the microverse. Rick has a fan base and his music is appreciated, he really wants for nothing, and honestly with all of the people that Genis is antagonizing Rick wouldn’t last too long considering that he is the weakest link of their symbiosis.

Hey, they’re family. Now when’s Master Order going to show up? 🙂
By the way PAD, was that “Motel 6 on Krypton” line supposed to show up or was it just in your art direction in the script and it got put in anyway?
David
Except for the art, which I still say needs to be inked, I’m loving Captain Marvel more now than any time since the restart. Lots of surprises, great dialogue, and now we get to see both costumes.
–your pal, Hoy
ok, I’m sure that someone mentioned this before, but I gotta ask. If the captain is such a universal menance, where are all the other heroes? (Please give me the “story reason” not the “real world/company” reason). Btw, I realy hate the non-inked work, but if it saves the company $$ and keeps the book going, I’m all for it.
I just started picking up the book with this reboot volume and I must say I have been quite impressed. In fact, I had never really read anything by you. That has certainly changed. I’ve never cared much for “cosmic” stories, but Captain Marvel is just wonderful. Keep up the good work.

As has been noted before – Phyla?? Peter, I thought you had more Class than that!
Liked the issue and the return of Epiphany, but was curious. She was Entropy’s sister, and Entropy is now Eternity, making her Eternity’s sister. But doesn’t this new Eternity have his own Entropy (son) as well as his own Epiphany (daughter)? Would this new Epiphany still be around after the new Eternity is replaced by the new Entropy. Would this process continue to repeat until their is a whole bunch of Epiphany’s out there? PAD?
I just read the latest issue, and I enjoyed it a great deal. I’m not sure why people have a problem with the art. I like the new guy–very consistent with what Reiss was doing before.
I’m glad the new Starfox look wasn’t used. That costume was okay (for someone), but really didn’t say Starfox.
Loved the last panel. Even though I remember seeing something about Genis’s sis showing up a few months ago, I had pretty much forgotten about it.
I guess that’s the problem with genetic engineering–your Mom can always make more siblings. Good stuff!
Oh, and I LOVED Neal’s cover last issue. I’m not a big fan of the artist of the month covers that don’t relate to the interior story, but Neal’s cover was worth the price of admission.
