  1. I am proud to say, Peter, that in contest against Runaways, Sentinel, and even 1602, that Fallen Angel was my favorite book this week.

I love the character, I love the characterization. I’m an aspiring writer (assuming there is such a thing – seriously, when you start writing, aren’t you automatically.. a writer?) and your characters continue to amaze me. This is only the 4th issue, and Lee is incredibly fleshed-out, and I love her to death.

    Continue kicking ášš.

  2. PAD,

Today I walked into my comic shop and picked up my first ever issues of Fallen Angel. Issue #1 was soled out but I bought #s 2,3,4 and added it to my pull list.

That being said, I guess the important thing is what did I think? Honestly, I really like this series. So far things look really interesting and I’m enjoying the characters.

  3. The book has been slow to hook me, but it is getting there now. I still am a bit unsure about Lee, but I’m beginning to like her. And I am definitely intrigued by Slate and Dolf. Love the art, too.

And the Beast itself is a great concept. I guess Lee will win, but I haven’t any idea how.

  4. I like Fallen Angel. THere are lots of interesting characters in this book. The bartender is my favorite so far. Now, about the Beast: he’s invisible, super strong, fast, possibly can walk through walls, is a really messy killer, and likes to rub his work in Lee’s face. If I didn’t know better, I’d say Lee was up against a vampire. Then again, I don’t know better. But I do wonder, how are you going to top this villain?

  5. I think this was your strongest issue so far. Lee is developing into a complex and interesting character. Kind of a mature Buffy with a little bit of the Punisher dashed in. I wasn’t sure if I’d be continuing to buy this issue, but as of this issue, I’m going to stick around for a while in order to see what happens next.

  6. I have an odd question – does Slate only have one arm? In all of the panels (except for the flashback) only one arm is showing.

I’m eagerly looking forward to what PAD will throw at us, and quite frankly, I’ll be happy if he never reveals any relationship between Lee and Supergirl.

  7. Fallen Angel #4.

    Funny.

I don’t have a pull list. I don’t frequent the comic store. But I make it once a month. Why? So I can pick up Fallen Angel, Captain Marvel, Supreme Power and Smax.

I consider Fallen Angel the bright light at the end of the tunnel. I enjoy it because it is original. I enjoy it because the dialogue is phenomenal. I enjoy it because the characters are well defined.

The only thing I miss is a letters column, but this will do.

BTW, I like the concept of the “villain” in this series. It’s going to be verrry interesting to see how this plays out.

  8. I must say that I love your work and that’s why I picked up Fallen Angel. Also because I was a huge fan of Supergirl and there were hints that there was a connection between the two titles.

But I must admit that something is lacking in this serie for me. It’s been four issues already and we still don’t know why she does what she does. How she does it. Who she is. Where does she come from. Is she good or bad or something in between. AND what is the connection with my beloved Supergirl alias Linda.

I hope that you’ll reveal the answer to some of those questions soon cause I just can’t relate to the caracter yet. I just fail to care about what’s happening to someone I don’t really know !!

Maybe I’ll wait a for couple issues… but not much more I’m really sad to say.

Please tell me that you will reveal something about what makes her tick soon. Will ya ?

(Sorry for my english, I’m french and from Montreal where we’ve met once at a convention Mr. David)

P.S.: Anyhow, I love what you do with Captain Marvel… sane or insane I’ll follow.

  9. The issue was a fun read. I must say that it’s nice to read a series that has (so far) been so consistent in its quality and pacing.

I have to agree about Lee being a nicely fleshed out character. Considering we’re only at issue #4 she has established remarkable presence.

I like the way she keeps the nature of her powers a secret. So far the audience has had only hints of what she’s capable of. I assume that eventually more info about her powers will be revealed to the reader, but I hope that she maintains her mysterious status to the other citizens of Bete Noire.

I’m hoping this series sticks around.

  10. I’m enjoying the character interactions. Prevalence of verbal affectations notwithstanding, the dialogue is spot on. And the art is growing on me.

That said, I found this issue little more than a placeholder. Last issue, an innocent young woman was torn asunder by an unknown creature, and at the end Lee was Really Pìššëd Øff. This issue, an innocent young woman is torn asunder by an unknown creature, and at the end Lee is Really Pìššëd Øff.

We learn that the creature has been to places other than Bette Noire, but I can’t say that “it makes cities disappear” disturbs me more than the fact that it tears people apart from the inside. As such, the stakes aren’t raised so much as … broadened? The personal stake Lee already had was more than enough for me. The far more standard “the city is in peril” angle doesn’t really increase the tension, and may actually undermine it; Bette Noire doesn’t seem to me to be a place I’d especially miss if it suddenly fell off the face of the planet.

Overall, then: a solid, entertaining read, but one I think suffers a bit from inertia.

  11. Won’t actually get the issue until next Tuesday (that’s living in Australia for you), but I just wanted to point out that the issue got a 9/10 rating at thefourthrail.com this week.

Congratulations, Peter. I’ve enjoyed the first three issues very much, and I can’t wait until I get my copy of #4.

There is some of that, yes. There’s necessary development and forward movement on the “B” plot, and we learn some background on the “A” plot, but the “A” plot doesn’t advance tremendously. That, however, is by design.

I’m trying to allow for word of mouth. I made issues #1 and #2 done-in-one stories so that if people heard good things about #1, they could pick up #2 and have no problem following (and, for that matter, if they bought #1 and couldn’t *find* #2, they wouldn’t fall behind in following the story.) Since #3 kicked off the first multi-part story, I was again allowing for the notion that people might hear good things about #3 and make #4 their first issue…and so there’s some basic repetition or, if you will, reinforcement.

Maybe I’m being hypersensitive to charges of “Oh, we can’t follow Peter David’s stories,” but considering this is an entirely new cast and entirely new venue, I am proceeding with caution. And if the folks who are aboard from issue #1 experience a slight feeling of deja vu, well…I appreciate your forebearance.

  13. FYI, TheFourthRail.com gave issue #4 a 9/10. Granted critics don’t decide wether a series is a success or a failor but I have to say it is gratifying that they are giving this series the praise it deserves. Keep up the good work!

  14. Of all the things I don’t care about, I don’t care about Fallen Angel the least.

Not really. I like Fallen Angel the most, actually, of all the comics that I do care about. I just loved that line so much I had to use it.

The art is stunning. Little things, like a panel of a cigarette being stubbed out, really grab me.

And I really enjoy the dialogue, especially Lee’s lines. “‘Kay.” She’s so accommodating!

Great stuff! My only complaint is that it’s too long between issues, but that can’t be helped.

  15. Liking it, so far. The approach seems more mature…and not just in the blood and guts and sexual themes. There’s a lot more showing as opposed to telling here…at least, it is in several key areas. And it’s introduced a lot more ambiguity than some people are comfortable with….me, I happen to like that ambiguity (which I think is being used purposefully by Lee…..)

  16. It is good, but I definatly would like an intro, a roll call, or summery to tell us the basics of who is related to who by what. I am someone who skims/reads books and can miss a sentance “He works for me.” Or just assume the wrong basic facts.

  17. Won’t actually get the issue until next Tuesday (that’s living in Australia for you),

How come? I live in Melbourne, I get mine on Thursday morning, which is like Wesdnesday night in America.

I appreciate the problem, but there’s only so much I can do. I’ve made a point every issue of saying everyone’s name, job, and involvement with each other, to the point where some readers tell me it’s repetitive. I’m continuing to do that, though, to accommodate new readers. But you’re basically saying that even that isn’t sufficient because you might skip right past it. Short of knocking out the first page and substitute a Marvel-esque text page, I can’t really help you.

  19. Well, yes, you have to pay attention to get the interpersonal relationships down, but come on, it’s a hëll of a lot easier than keeping track of the Summers family tree over in X-Men.

  20. Peter, I wasn’t warm to Lee before but I am now. This has been a great two issues and you know how exactly to get the reader riled at our unseen enemy and wanting our heroine to stomp them from here to kingdom come. Keep up the good work and hope DC stays with the book.

  22. I liked that the first two were introductory stories, and the second two were the first main arc, the story “you wanted to tell”. I didn’t have any trouble keeping track of the characters, but I read all four in a row, so maybe it was easier to remember. I did feel like I had to read very carefully, and probably I’ll go back and read them again to try to catch more of the details. As I said, I don’t know much about comics (am trying to learn!) but I can see why some people might freak about the blood and guts and sex. It pushed me, but being pushed is good. This isn’t from #4, but I really enjoyed the “thieves everywhere” moment early on.

  23. How come? I live in Melbourne, I get mine on Thursday morning, which is like Wesdnesday night in America.

Ah. I live in Perth, and my store stocks on Friday throughout the day. I’m busy on Fridays and throughout the weekend, and so Tuesday tends to be a day where I can make a trip to the store without being too rushed. Still, Friday’s not as good as Thursday morning 🙂

  24. Hello…newbie here…just want to tell Peter David I’m really enjoying the Fallen Angel series…and was a bit shocked of how bloody issue #4 was but its cool 🙂 Although I have a little hard time keeping up (I forget easily what happens in previous issues) but I just need to read it again like all 4 in a row..so…but other than that keep up the good work!

  25. Another really entertaining issue. I love the atmosphere, the air of mystery surrounding Lee, and the disturbing, frightening menace of the Beast. I enjoyed Inspector Slate’s characterization here– he just gets more interesting by the issue. My only complaints: the last page was entirely unnecessary after that amazing two-page spread, and I felt the use of the word “bìŧçh” in this circumstance was gratuitous and unnecessary.

I have no idea what’s going on, but I actually enjoy that, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next.

  26. Still, Friday’s not as good as Thursday morning 🙂

That’s true. 🙂 Better than not getting it at all though!

  27. I’m really enjoying this series. So far it’s been dark fun, and not at all what I was really expecting. I thught it would be more super-heroie than it is, and I really like the gritty dramatic (yet still occasionaly funny) feel.

You know what’d be nice? If DC would give the comic a little bit of the promo page (maybe a small coloumn?) to do a recap and character round up. Just something to help get newbies up to speed, and refresh other’s memories to signifcant plot points. Not quite as in depth as the Marvel recap apge, but something… you know?

  28. A bit off-topic, but I wasn’t sure where to put this…

The new Hulk: Grey #1 has a comment about theories about the Grey Hulk and the line ‘ But I digress…”

    hehehe!

Also: the new Captain Marvel was really good this week!

Still haven’t got the latest Fallen Angel! Need to pick that up soon!
