At least we don’t have to worry about the world ending because of a Cubs/Red Sox World Series.
The way the Sox are playing, they don’t even deserve a single win of this series, but the good news for them is that with Mulder out, they don’t have to face one of the Three Aces until at least Game 4.
Maybe an A’s/Cubs World Series will be good – anyone except the Braves, Giants, or Yankees…
Wait, there’s a pro ballplayer named Mulder? Has he ever met Vin Scully?
Being a die hard Yankee fan, I’m so happy the Red Sox got whacked around. Why? Besides hating the Red Sox, that means Pedro Martinez is one step closer to wearing pinstripes.
I think there’s still a chance for the Sox (hey, I said I was a Sox fan…), since both Oakland and Boston have records very skewed in favor of their home fields. The interesting point in my mind is how they handle Pedro. I’ve got a feeling they’ll put him in Game 4 if it happens, which I think is a mistake. Yeah, Game 4’d be a must win…but so’s Game 5, and you know in advance 5’s a must win and will have to be played for the Sox to win the series. I go for both giving him the extra rest, and for making him the pitcher in Oakland, given the Sox offensive differential in favor of Fenway. The possible counter-argument is how many games he’d then be available for in round 2.
Otherwise, being resident in the Bay Area, I just have to hope we don’t get another As-Giants World Series, at least until I get a chance to *really* secure stuff in my condo.
You want real pain? I was a Dodger fan… 🙁
What a Saturday this is going to be…
My Twins vs. the Yankees and the Red Sox vs. the A’s
…gotta love it.
You think being a Dodger fan is pain? I’m a TIGER fan.
and a Saints fan.
and a Pistons fan.
I’d talk further but I’ve got a ledge to climb out onto.
Oh, we’re comparing pain now?
I live in Philly. We live for the pain.
We’re talking sports pains? Hey, I’m a Chicago Cubs fa–
Oh.
Wait, never mind… 🙂
As a die hard Yankee fan (no I’m not a band wagon jumper, Don Mattingly was my hero growing up, you know back when the Yanks were one of the worst teams in baseball) I’m kind of dissapointed at seeing the Sox get slapped around. It would have been very exciting to watch a Yankees/Red Sox playoff game.
As for Julio’s comment about getting Pedro in pinstirpes, all I have to say is that there is no way New Yorkers will accept him. The Rocket had a hard enough time fitting in with the fans. Heck, I know some fans who will never accept him as a Yankee. He’ll alway be a Red Sock to some people (ever wonder why no one thinks of him as a Blue Jay?)
Although we will need some pitchers next year, I highly doubt it will be in the form of Pedro.
I’m odd, I admit, but…the Red Sox had a good year. They provided us with a lot of entertainment and good feeling. This was a good team to root for. I’m content with that.
It is looking bad right now for the dream series of Cubs V. Sox. However, the last team to blow a 2-0 lead in the playoffs was the A’s.
(And a day late on Bucky “f-ing” Dent; 25 years ago, my mother and I were watching the game when he came to the plate, and I stupidly said, “if he hits a homer on the next pitch, I’ll buy dinner.” Homer next pitch. Such was my introduction to the curse of the Bambino.)

Huh, sounds exactly like me! It’s good to see that there are other Don Mattingly fans out there. I remember living in NY, but spending the summers in Springfield, MA and as a kid, it was hard when the Yankees were a last place team to show up at camp with a Yankees hat on.
After growing up in NY and most recently living in Boston, I’ve experienced both sides of the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry and I have to say that it’s the best one in baseball and anytime these two teams get together, it’s going to be enjoyable, especially picking up a NY paper and a Boston paper the next day to read both sides of the story.
I finally gotta weigh in on this one. I’ve been a Yankee fan since I was 9 and the M&M boys were doing their ’61 thing. My father saw Gehrig play and cried the day he died. My nephew was 9 in 1996, that magical year.
So we’re 3 generations of Yankees fans who love to see the Yankees win and Boston lose.
Now I would be perfectly happy for the Yanks to play the Cubs in the WS. I don’t like Giants or thet Braves.
Still this is fun.
But Boston fans, who upsets you more: Bucky Dent or Bill Buckner?
Count me in as another Yankee fan from the Mattingly days…although, my favorite player was and always be Dave Winfield. I met him when I was 8, and that is still a fond memory. He was just as nice in person as I had hoped, and still my all time favorite signing memory (no offense, PAD, I am still glad to have met you at Wizard COn Phily).
Who upsets this Red Sox fan more? Calvin Shiraldi.
Well, it’s been announced that Pedro’s being saved for Game 5. While I’m nervous about Burkett in Game 4, I still think this is the right decision for the reasons given earlier.
Btw, as a side note, I also still think that Duquette made the right decision in letting the Rocket go. Yeah, he’s made an amazing comeback since leaving, but look at his record in his last five Boston years. Given that record over an extended period and the salary he was demanding, letting him go was correct; there was no good reason to think he’d suddenly revert back to the form of his initial glory period. Of course, there’s also the argument that being let go also gave him the incentive he needed to get back to that level.
No bullpen, no pennant. Sorry Sox.
Go Cubs go! 🙂
I was at tonight’s game at Wrigley and had a great time. Now let’s see if the Cubs can manage one more win tomorrow…
Well, it ain’t over yet!
Now it is.
Go Cubs go! Bring on the Fish!
Well, the Cubs won tonight, so I get to go back to Wrigley on Tuesday and Wednesday. 🙂
Meanwhile, the Red Sox tied up the A’s, so Armageddon is still in play…
Wow. The Sox are up 4-1 in the 6th. They might actually pull this out. Peters 7th game, 9th inning meteor scenario might just happen after all… (:
As for me, I am sort of an anti-Yankee fan. You see my three favorite teams, in no particular order, are the Dodgers, the Mariners (talk about pain- two 90 win seasons in a row without playoffs) and whatever team happens to be playing the Yankees at any given time. (:
Of course of the teams remaining I wanna see the Cubbies take it.
*Wait, there’s a pro ballplayer named Mulder? Has he ever met Vin Scully?*
No, but Vin Scullys partner for many years was Jerry Doggett (Scullys post Mulder partner was Doggett just in case you are one of the fans that jumped ship when Mulder did. I wish I was one).
