Ok, I took a look at the character designs. A few things:
1) Why do they have the library looking different than it did in the TV show?
2) I don’t like how Giles looks. The animated version of him looks ugly.
3) Why is Dawn in it? Dawn did not exist when the animated show is to take place. I know that the monks made people think that Dawn was around but she wasn’t. I have the same problem with the comic how they are going to have the reason that Buffy was committed was because Dawn told their parents about the slaying.
Well, I’m not a Buffy fan (I know, I know… the horror…) but, from a purely artistic point of view, those are some darn fine pieces of art! It was nice to see the Kirby, Mignola and Timm influences in there, but not overdone. I thought he captured the characters/actors really well, too.
I thought the Giles and Xander cartoon versions were extremely good representations (caricatures?) of the real actors.
As I understand it, the cartoon would be the ‘retrofit’ history of Buffy, where Dawn was added.
What really excited me about the link was new art labed “Batman Beyond.” Any chance there’s a new animation project featuring Terry McGuinness and his mentor?
I’m guessing that the reason they’re using Dawn is that the show actually takes place on a different timeline than the show, in which Dawn had always been around. The one thing I’m wondering is why there’s no Oz. He was one of my favorites.
By the way, is this show actually going to happen? Last time I heard, it was dead in the water.
I generally like the art, except for the picture of Buffy in those way-too-low-cut leopard-skin pants.
The show is, at the moment, never-to-be-seen-on-this-Earth, hence the reference to Lucien’s library in the header.
If the show had been produced, it would have been set during Buffy’s first year at Sunnydale High, before Oz met Willow. Based on this artwork, though, I would have liked to see him make a cameo appearance. I suspect Eric Wight would have drawn him well.

That’s strange, because the information I saw on the pilot had an actor listed as Oz’s voice, and there was no credit for Dawn (of course, she just might not have appeared in said episode).
1. Eric Wright really caught something with the design for Xander. Just enough slump to the shoulders, but still a great mischevious look.
2, What with comparing these designs to the other on the page, would we have been able to call it “Buffy Beyond?” Would Static have been visting from Dakota? Would there have been an Alfred-Giles crossover, where it’s revealed that Alfred was originally a watcher before working for the Waynes?
Alright – I’ll stop now. 🙂
Yeah, that was a very rumpy shot of the Buffster in the tight pants, wasn’t it? That’s terrible. I’m appalled. Really. Just – appalled. I think I’ll go back and look at it again, just because I’m so appalled.
Xander: perfect. Willow: adorable. Giles: okay. Angel: very BTAS/BB. Joyce and Dawn: good, and pretty much how I remember Michelle T. about that age.
But I don’t care for Buffy, I suppose because they’ve clearly decided to draw the archetypal character rather than Sarah Michelle.
All the same, it’s a pity we’ll never see these drawings in motion.
