DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE?

Something on Thursday night’s “Daily Show?” Warning: Involves a dirty word, so you have to continue to read.

  1. I heard it as “fûçkërš,” and did a double-take, as well. My wife seems to think he only mouthed it. I suppose he could have said something very similar that’s not bleepworthy, but it seemed pretty clear to me. Will be interested to see if it’s in the Monday rerun.

  2. You have to remember, Comedy Centrel also aired South Park, Bigger Longer and Uncut completely unbleeped. They didn’t touch a frame other than to letterbox it.

  3. Lisa and I heard it as “fûçkërš”, and I’m pretty certain he didn’t just mouth it.

    We were pretty surprised.

Given that other things have been bleeped on that show in the recent past, my guess is that someone fu … messed up on the “bleep” button.

  4. I’ve gotta give Comedy Central the thumbs up here.

If used in the current yet proper context that the FCC allows (give it time, and Powell will get it chnaged), there’s nothing the FCC should be able to do, although they’ll certainly try.

The “Shìŧ” episode of South Park is still one of my favorites as well. 🙂

  5. Actually I think it was a shout out to the days earlier events with Clear Channel. They also replayed the report with George Takai saying Young Wet Bìŧçhëš, an infamous Howard Stern drop.

  6. Just happen to have it on tape: he clearly at least mouths “fûçkërš”. My wife says she also hears him saying the full word, but tres sotto voce. I only hear him saing the “Fu” and then letting our minds and his moving lips fill in the rest.

Either way, still the best regular comedy show on TV and, sadly, one of the best news shows, too–I put it right behind NewsHour and BBC World News-tied with Meet the Press.

  7. Is Rob the only one who heard the unbleeped utterance as “Fathers” (given that Stewart’s bit had to do with the Founding Fathers)? I thought it was “fûçkërš” too, particularly since he actually did use “fûçkërš” later in the show in his interview with Samuel Jackson; but he could easily have said “Fathers” and tried to make it sound like “fûçkërš.”

  8. I noticed it too; I suspect the censors just weren’t paying attention. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a beep there by Monday; if there is, that pretty much proves it.

  9. I heard it as well. Whether he said “fathers” instead (like Elayne suggested) is debatable, but they definitely didn’t bleep it whatever it was.

  10. Most bleeping of swears on adult-oriented shows like the Daily Show seems pointless anyways. Everyone KNOWS what they’re saying.

“Malcolm in the Middle” did a joke about this, with the principal wanting the phrase “suck my dìçk” (bleeped out but obvious) censored in a school newspaper story, and Malcolm responding “Everyone will know what it says anyways.”

  11. Yeah, I caught it — Jon said “those fûçkërš” under his breath but audibly. I’d be surprised if Comedy Central did this deliberately — to my knowledge they’ve always bleeped the f word before midnight — and REALLY surprized if they left it in the rerun in the morning this upcoming week.

Will anyone care? I doubt it, as this was late night cable, not regulae TV or during a massive event. I bet it’ll just blow over; at most, Jon’ll make a joke about it on the next new Daily Show, and that will be it.

  12. Yeah, I caught it, which I thought was odd, because later in the show, he used the same word (or a similar one) based on the context, and it was bleeped out.

I just wondered if it slipped through or if it was something else and maybe I’d misheard it.

Because, you know, the heavens and the earth would crumble if a show that airs at 11pm at night were allowed to use an occasional “naughty” word. Darn you, FCC! Darn you all to heck!

    😉

  13. Ðámņ, sorry I missed that one.

And you can bet if that episode reruns at all it will be bleeped, since the reruns are on at 10am an 7pm or something like that. The “first runs” are on at 11pm…

  14. Just caught on tape. I thought he said it. No worries of the FCC here in Canada, but someone will conplain to the CRTC, but then Comedy Network (which airs Daily Show) can fall back on the fact that they post a disclaimer before and during the show. This is the same network that has Jack Daniels commercials on at 11am.

“Oh Canada, umm.. a modern stone-age family”

  15. I actually kinda hope that Comedy Central does catch some flak over this. Not that I bear CC any ill will mind you, I just think they’re irreverant enough over there that they’ll look an FCC fine in the face and say “Fûçk you”. Maybe that’ll inspire companies like NBC and Clear Channel to realize: “Hey…we’re pûššìëš!”

(Hey, this is fun. I usually avoid the 4-letter words on this talkback because I don’t see anyone else use them, but now my potty-mouth is freeeee!)

  16. I’ve gotta give Comedy Central the thumbs up here.

If used in the current yet proper context that the FCC allows (give it time, and Powell will get it chnaged), there’s nothing the FCC should be able to do, although they’ll certainly try.

For that to happen, the FCC would have to be granted some sort of legal power over cable content. That’s right, cable channels don’t fall under the FCC’s jurisdiction.

    So says this article, anyway:

    http://www.bizreport.com/article.php?art_id=6100

    Key passage:

Lawmakers attempting to extend the FCC’s indecency oversight to cable television likely would run into constitutional obstacles, according to specialists in First Amendment and FCC law. Congress has given the FCC authority to govern content on radio and television broadcasts that travel over the airwaves because that spectrum belongs to the public. It is lent to broadcasters and may be revoked by the government.

Over-the-air broadcast signals are “pervasive,” the courts have ruled, calling them an “uninvited guest” into the home, because anyone with a TV or radio antenna can receive them for free. As such, they must adhere to certain standards of decency.

But cable and satellite channels are carried on privately built systems and are received only by paying viewers; they are invited guests and therefore do not have to behave with the same decorum as broadcast channels.

I think the real issue is: Why doesn’t Comedy Central unbleep more of their programming? Like Chapelle’s Show, for instance?

    -Dave O’Connell

  17. Responding to Dave O’Connell:

I don’t know about Comedy Central, but I would imagine any boycott threats by advertisers or consumers pretty much keeps a lot of the cable networks following the same “standards” as the broadcast networks. And it’s TRUE that the FCC can really only limit the airwaves, for now.

  18. SHOCKED, I tell you! I am shocked and dismayed! All my wasted asterisks and self-censoring, for what purpose? So that some uptight ášš might not get their panties in a wrinkle?

    FÙÇK THAT.

Ah, the freedom to curse. Reminds of my days cooking a la carte…..

And I recall CC rebroadcasting a Comic Relief about 5 years ago, in prime time, uncensored. Gave me a bit of false hope at the moment. I’m proud of our crew!

  19. Ðámņ! I’ve been recording this show so diligently on DVD, and I make the mistake of taking the night off for a show. If anyone has it on tape, I’d kill for a copy… or at least slap someone you know silly. E-mail me.

In a related story, someone once sent me a copy of the overseas Daily Show compilations. It was fun to hear Jon talk about North Korea’s Kim Jong Ill by saying, “Who the f*ck is this guy?!”

  20. Comedy Central did air the show on the 9am replay (I came in during “Back in Black” so I missed the cursing), but the channel did kill the 6pm rebroadcast Friday night, and replaced it with a repeat of the Feb 12th airing.

  21. Oh dear. Looks like one of the extras from Deliverance has managed to get a computer and an internet connection. Looks like Glenn has some cleaning up here to do.

Personally, I think this Stewart flap is almost as funny as when MAD TV did an episode of The Sopranos, as it would be broadcast on PAX TV.

Jess: You have to remember, Comedy Centrel also aired South Park, Bigger Longer and Uncut completely unbleeped.

Luigi Novi: Was this recent, Jess, which would be consistent with more relaxed standards, or was it some time ago?

  24. Holy Shìŧ! that made my head spin. Sigh. Why do people find spamming so enjoyable??? Looks like PAD will have to start banning users afterall.

As far as swearing goes. South Park barely bleeps the bad words and never bleeps Kenny when he says the F word. Even with a bleep you can make out what word they are saying. lol. I love that toon. 😀

  25. Am I the only one who doesn’t have the technology to COPY/PASTE in the little white “Comments” box?

  26. Luigi Novi –

I was watching, it was maybe… December?… that South Park the movie was aired uncut.

We were shocked when it came on and was unbleeped, even though it was fairly late at night.

  27. Luigi,

They showed it a few months ago..well before the Superbowl..

And, speaking as one who’s studied Telecom law, yeah, it’s pretty much the advertisers/cable companies that keep basic cable clean. The pay channels like HBO, because they are full pay channels, pretty much have whatever standard they want, as they don’t have to worry about the advertisers.

On side note…I caught Bill Mahers new show the other night..it was really good..much better than Dennis Miller’s one.

  28. you know , even just to cut and paste that in Bendis has far to much time on his hands……..

ahem and, I dámņ i missed that episode.

but Jon Stuart (the host, not the G L ) never stuck me as the kind of guy to hold his tougue. Sorta like The Politically Incorrect host

  29. the FCC has relaxed it’s profanity-on-TV standards, you can now say the words “šhìŧ” and “fûçk” as long as in the first case you are not actually referring to the act of defacating or to actual feces (I think) and in the latter case as long as you are not actually referring to intercourse. and of course you must give the program the appropriate rating. However, even though I haven’t watched the daily show in quite some time now, If I remember correctly, they usually give themselves a TV13 rating and just bleep out profanity. It might have been a slip-up or maybe you just heard it wrong. but who knows.

  30. Hey, long time reader and lurker, first time poster. Got a friend who’s a writer on The Daily Show and this was just a mistake. Comedy Central would totally defy standards, but they would probably advertise and make a big deal about it a bit more than this. (a la South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut)

  31. Well, apparently PAD is one of the only ones to notice…TDS led with a story about it, apologizing but noting they got ZERO letters or calls about it. Heh.

  32. (Sorry, PAD, but it has to be said, and it only makes sense here…)

“…Jon Stuart (the host, not the G L ) never stuck me as the kind of guy to hold his tougue.”

Personally, I never thought John Stewart the GL was the really PC type, either – I think he and Jon Stewart the TV host would get along fine! 🙂

  33. Im all in favor of the language Im happy that we have what little rights that are left. I find it funny and would hate to think that because you don’t know how to talk and parent your kids that I have to only see what you want. Fûçk the FCC is my motto. And if you are afraid to talk to your kids about this I hate to see how they turn out, as in school they will learn worse words and even drugs where your not sitting right there to do your job as a parent. If your against this language on tv, unplug your tv, and put your kids up to adoption.
