A shout out to Noel Thingvall for bringing to my attention that OBLIVION II: BACKLASH comes out today on DVD. I feel fairly confident that there will be little to no bonus material whatsoever. Still, of the two OBLIVION films–two films I wrote for Full Moon that are literally cowboys and aliens in outer space–I think this one’s better. Certainly my script is more consistent, less heavy handed, and more fun than the first (although the first is still a hoot and I recommend it, if for no other reason than George Takei’s gloriously scene-chewing performance as town drunk Doc Valentine, and Carel Struycken (hope I came close to getting his name right) as the towering and somber Mr. Gaunt.)
It’s on Amazon. Quick, everybody order it (I think it’s about ten bucks) and watch them scratch their heads in wonderment as to why it’s their best selling DVD. Not that I get so much as a dime of the DVD income, but hey, it’s a pride thing.

GH Update: Actually, if you order it by clicking on this link, we do get a dime or so. It’s not much, but we can promise that we won’t spend the proceeds on eBay the way Mark Evanier does. And did we mention you can buy Oblivion there too?

I’ve always loved your work for Full Moon, PAD- I admit particular fondness for your work on the Trancers series, but the Oblivion flicks were also hoots.
(and you’re right- George Takei’s “I… want… BOOZE!” haunts me to this day. 🙂
Ooh boy! If both DVDs, or just one- are closed-captioned or subtitled, I’ma gonna get ’em!
I saw OBLIVION on VHS a looong time ago and I really liked it. “Mon-Thing…” *groan*
Sweet! After they released the original ‘Oblivion’ on DVD some time back, I was wondering if they’d ever get around to releasing part 2. Partly for my Musetta Vander in leather fixation, but also because of Maxwell Caulfield as the dreaded bounty hunter Sweeney. (“Not SWEENEY!!!”)
I bought the DVD of “Oblivion 2” months ago. It was released in Germany in 2002, I think. In both, english and german language.
No bonus material. 🙁
Cool. I never saw Oblivion 2. Possibly because the Schlitz joke in Oblivion 1 made blood leak out of my ears.
I liked Oblivion when it came out (at the time I was big into the Puppet Master series and was watching all that was Full Moon). I still haven’t seen the two Trancers movies though; #2 was just horribly bad compared to #1 and I would feel obligated to watch #3 before #s 4 & 5.
Does anyone know the specs on these films? I can’t see them on amazon or DVDPricesearch. I’d like to know if they are in anamorphic widescreen, and what sound format.

Search for “backlash” to find it on DVDPriceSearch.
It’s selling for $5.99 at DeepDiscountDVD, by the way.
IMDb mentions that the original Oblivion was Pan-&-Scan. Searching at DVDPriceSearch confirms it.
I couldn’t find info on an aspect ratio for Backlash.
Good lord I hate pan and scan. I hope backlash managed to be OAR.
Here’s a link to get Oblivion cheaper than new and used at Amazon: http://www.lasersedge.com/item_detail.asp?id=38632&tMedia=1
I’ve never done mail order from them, but I’ve shopped at their store since my laserdisc days (even got Oblivion I +II on laserdisc there, as a matter of fact)

I liked both films. I don’t think they arr PAD’s best stories, but entertaining nontheless. But what was the sudden ending in the second movie all about? No budget to film the rest? It just seemed so forced…
I like the first one better, personally — mainly, I think, because it’s the one that contains the “Bingo” scene, which is surely one of the funniest scenes in the history of direct-to-video movies!
Watching the first Oblivion on video with my friend when we were teenagers is a fond high school memory of mine. Thanks for it, PAD!
(Best part of the second one, for me, was the shout-out to people who read your “Star Trek” comics. “Charming woman named Blaise” … tee- hee!)

Woohoo!
Now I have something EVEN BETTER to ask you to autograph for me at a convention! I adore both these movies, and was wishing I could get a DVD copy last year to bring to DragonCon with me (before I became Typhoid Mary, that is).
Thank you for the heads-up!

The first Oblivion dvd is presented in full screen (the reason why I didn’t buy it — what can I say, I’m a purist!)… of course, I highly doubt they’ll ever release this movie in widescreen so there may be no other choice.
I believe that the second dvd is also presented in full screen.

I’m a fan of OAR too, but I think both these films were made in full screen. I might be wrong, and anyone with proof that I am can feel free to correct me. I’ve watched the first one on DVD and it didn’t seem like anything was missing from the sides.
Full Moon tailored their films to the straight-to-video market so most were filmed open-matte. Letterboxes could be laid over the top and bottom should it play in theaters, but they were primarily made for 4:3 ratio tvs.
