RUSSIAN AROUND

We’ve got an agreement for a deal to have a Russian edition of “Sir Apropos of Nothing” produced. It will be available in Germany as well, and a Spanish publisher is making inquiries.

Meantime, there remains absolutely zero interest in the title from publishers in England. Go figure.

WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

Kathleen’s dad has put up, on his website, an array of pictures of the baby and various family members. You can find them at www.homepage.mac.com/donoshea. A couple of the pictures don’t have the right resolution if you click on them to enlarge them, but that’s being worked on and will be straightened out before long.

EVERYBODY OUT OF THE POOL

Conventional wisdom says that first babies are usually late, and that labor can be twenty hours and up.

Well, no one ever said Kathleen David was conventional.

On the eve of the worst snowstorm to hit Long Island in two years, I took Kathleen–whose contractions were coming every four minutes apart–to the hospital last night at 12:15 AM, and as of 2:54 PM this afternoon, Caroline Helen David was born. Mother and very bewildered daughter (a look I’m become quite used to from my children) are doing fine.

As is Todd Morton, the winner of the pool who nailed gender and DOB, and edged out his closest competitor, Santiago Casares (who also got gender and DOB), with his guess of 7 pounds, 1 oz (actual weight: 6 pounds, 13 ounces) as opposed to Santiago’s guess of eight pounds even. But you know what? Santiago did come closer on the time (5:45 PM compared to Todd’s 7:45 PM). So I’ll give Todd first choice of the two prizes, and Santiago gets the other.

I’m going to sleep now.

YOU’VE WON A PRIZE PACKAGE WORTH–

–thirty dollars!

To my complete surprise, I received a money order for $30 from Syosset Lanes. Prize money from the Pro/Am. Surprised the hëll out of me. My first “earnings” bowling.

What was even more astonishing was that, according to the documentation, I’d finished 43rd. Considering there were over eight hundred bowlers entered, that’s not bad. So I’m a happy camper.

And hey! No dissing of David Traber, as I’ve seen elsewhere. One should never judge if someone’s an áššhølë by how they come across on TV. Especially when their confidence level in their abilities is so low that they’d been packing up and preparing to leave when they qualified, and they’re abruptly thrust into the position of trying to be clever and banter on national TV without a lot of experience doing so. Professional actors in similar situations have scripts to work off. So do, I would surmise, pro wrestlers. And most pro athletes can talk about team efforts. Bowling is very individual.

What I know is that, during the Pro/Am, he gave me more help and pointers than any other Pro, and helped turn my game around. So however folks think he came across in TV, in “real life” he’s anything but arrogant.

SHOWER SCENE

Yesterday the nice folks at Del Rey threw a surprise Baby shower for Kathleen, organized by head honcho Betsy Mitchell. We were given lots of adorable baby stuff. Wednesday is pretty much her last day.

Apparently having seen too many old sitcoms, Ariel was under the impression that at some point, Kath would suddenly say, “The baby’s coming,” and we would then run around screaming and shouting and trying to get out the door while comically forgetting such important items as an overnight bag or the mother-to-be. So we explained the actual process is a bit more drawn out than that.

MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH

Attended the PBA match at Syosset Lanes in Long Island. Wouldn’t you know, there was a guy in the audience sporting a Spider-Man shirt who had copious screen time. So if you saw him and thought it was me…it wasn’t.

The David family was pulling for bowling Dave Traber, largely because Traber offered advice and support during the Pro/Am last Sunday that has literally turned my league game around after a hideous five week slump. Traber wound up tying at 245 against Norm Duke, forcing a sudden death roll off which Duke won. This upset us greatly, and we will continue to be major Traber fans. And…and…Traber has cooler hair than Norm Duke. So there.

EVERYBODY INTO THE POOL

Okay, fine. We’ve been asked to do it, and we’ll do it.

Announcing the official “Little David Baby Pool,” in which entrants are challenged to guess specifics about the future offspring of Peter and Kathleen David.

Just so everyone is starting off on even footing: The original sonograms at 8 and 20 weeks projected a due date of December 18. A sonogram taken yesterday puts it at December 9. Early sonos are usually more accurate than later; however, the OB/GYN has stated that the baby could come at any time. Meantime, conventional wisdom states that first pregnancies are frequently late. None of the sonos were forthcoming about gender because the baby remained firmly in the fetal position…although, really, you can’t hold it against the kid because, y’know, if you can’t be in the fetal position while you’re a fetus, when CAN you be?

Entries are judged on the following criteria, in this order by process of elimination:

1) Gender.

2) Date of Birth

3) Weight

4) Time of Birth

I based the order on the most asked questions we get (“Do you know the gender? When’s it due?”) So in other words, get the gender correct and you move on to the next level of judgment. Get the date right but the gender wrong and you’re SOL. The person who gets gender and DOB correct wins. If more than one person gets gender and DOB right, we move on to tie-breakers such as weight and time of birth. That way we dont’ have to referee if multiple people guess the same gender and DOB, because the other criteria will certainly determine a winner.

What’s the winner get? His or her choice of either signed editions of all three cover variants of CAPTAIN MARVEL #1, or a signed copy of “SIR APROPOS OF NOTHING” (ppbk) and the sequel, “THE WOAD TO WUIN” (hc).

All entries should be right here at this thread at www.peterdavid.net. That way everything’s open and above board. E-mail submissions directly to my AOL account will not be counted.
