Freak Out Friday–the Introduction

It seems to me that Donald Trump could potentially wind up taking over this whole blog. Because every day he or his aides are saying or doing something stupid. Indeed, if they had a “# of Days Without Screwing Up” counter in the Oval Office, it would have to be reset every day. So I am going to confine Trump comments to Freak Out Friday. That way we can simply freak out over everything they’ve done in the past week and get it out of our systems, and thus have clear heads for the weekend.

It remains amazing to me how conservatives have rewritten history, having forgotten their own determination to block everything Obama did and make him a one term president, and their incessant lies about Obama’s birthplace and picketing with racist signs and epithets, and instead now claim that we should give Trump a chance. Especially considering that in the past week:

1) Trump forgot to mention Jews on Holocaust Remembrance Day. I suspect he also forgot to mention the Romani, but considering how he positioned himself as a friend of the Jews, it’s a notable omission.

2) Threatened to send in American troops to Mexico, a sovereign nation, to “help” with drug enforcement.

3) Picked a fight with the Prime Minister of Australia. How in the HÊLL does ANYONE pick a fight with a country where everyone says “G’day” and “No worries?”

4) Steve Bannon declared that we will be at war with China within the next decade. Yeah, that’s what we want to hear. Let’s pick fights with Mexico, Australia and China in the course of one week.

5) Kellyanne Conway declared on television that Trump’s Muslim ban was to prevent another massacre at Bowling Green, an incident which she claimed was covered by no newspapers. Possibly because it never happened. Some terrorists who resided in Bowling Green were arrested, but they had no plans to launch any assaults on the U.S., and their arrest was indeed thoroughly covered by the media.

6) I have no personal comments on Judge Gorsuch, his nominee for SCOTUS, but I’m getting emails from alarmed Gay and Lesbian organizations who seem to be freaking out about him, so I figure that’s not good.

I have to admit, I’m wondering what in the world he would have to do that would prompt current supporters of his to admit they screwed up. The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that his claim that he could kill someone on Fifth Avenue and his backers would not be bothered by it is the single most truthful thing he’s ever said.

    This is not quite accurate and it’s even worse than it sounds. The State Department (b/c it’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day) sent the White House a draft statement as a suggested starting point. That statement had language in it specifically recognizing place of Jews in the Holocaust. The White House then removed all references to the Jews from their released statement. So no, they didn’t forget to mention the Jews. They purposefully excluded them.

      2. Yeah, well when your chief strategist (Bannon) is a white supremacist, things like that are, tragically, to be expected. One prominent neo-nazi (I believe it was that Spencer guy of “punched in the face” fame) congratulated the White House for its “dejudification” of the Holocaust.

        Annnd…I just remembered that you’re Jewish. I hope I haven’t prompted an irrational degree of worry. Not that I (a white male who drew up Methodist and could go to ground their if I had to chuck secularism) have a good feel for what degree of worry becomes irrational in our current environment.

    2. How does one justify refusing to include *Jews* in a statement about International Holocaust Day?

      I have one distant male Jewish ancestor, so I know I don’t qualify as Jewish even under inheritance rules, and that cuts my soul regardless.

      In the ’70s I went with a friend, a former statewide political candidate, to a “Save Soviet Jews” rally in downtown St. Louis, back when the Soviet government was refusing to allow emigration to Israel. Now I’m beginning to wonder when there are going to be “Save American Jews” rallies.

There’s a story in…the NY Daily News, I think, either that or the NY Post, anyway, that one reason Friday tends to be the day weird šhìŧ comes down is that the two biggest forces acting on Donald are Steve Bannon (an openly admitted white supremacist) and his son-in-law Jared Kushner (who’s Orthodox and keeps Shabbat rather strictly).

    So from Friday sometime (depending on the sun and what preparations he has) through Saturday evening, Kushner isn’t there to counterbalance Bannon. Hence.

    Terrifying.

    We need to stop supplying Republicans with excuses for their behavior. They have none.

    The Republicans have forgotten nothing. They are very aware that they are hypocritical, lying sacks of šhìŧ. They just don’t care.

    If lying about things, and then lying about their lies and continuing to do tremendous harm to the country keeps them in power then they will continue to do so unrepentantly.

      Trump could come out and say he is Hitler 2.0, and they wouldn’t care because they’re the party in power. And while the country is burning to the ground, they’ll just point the finger everywhere but themselves.

  5. Well, going with the theme of the day, Sean Spicer just dumped a whole barrel of gasoline on the raging debate over whether he is an unrepentant liar or downright moron. The smart money now says he’s probably both. He just out forward that Trump’s Muslim ban would have stopped a Timothy McVeigh style bomber while trying to spin his way through an answer.

  6. I am really sad to hear of all the things Trump is doing to your country and to the world. I live in the UK but I was one of the people who didn’t think he would be able to do everything he was promising. In fact I thought he was promising all this stuff because he didn’t really believe he would win and have to implement any of it. When he did win I knew it was bad but I still thought he wouldn’t be able to do most of the stuff he promised because I thought your government had a little thing called ‘checks and balances’ which i thought stopped any one person (even the president) from doing anything without getting the backing of others in congress etc. I thought that was why Obama was finding it so difficult to implement all the things he wanted. I know Congress is mostly made up of Republicans but it seemed like most of them couldn’t stand Trump either and might at least be able to rein him in a little. However from what i can tell from this side of the Atlantic it seems he doesn’t even have to go to congress, he just signs his name in a book (executive orders) and it just gets enacted. What happened to the checks and balances?

  8. This administration seems to be run by Hydra and or the Red Skull, the way they are acting. This is scarily similar to the ongoing Captain America Steve Rogers comic book….yeesh…can we get a reboot soon?
