Based upon an event about 3/4 of the way into the film, I predict the following (spoiler related) reaction from the GOP:
“Prometheus” is just more liberal abortion propaganda, advocating the notion that a woman should go to any lengths to terminate an unwanted pregnancy because the fetus is not a person, but just an unwanted thing.

Now, Alien 4, that was movie that had its principles in the right place!
When I saw your twitter post (right after seeing the movie) my first thought was, “Is it going to be about the religious overtones and the relationship between God, gods, and man, or is it going to be the truly insane objection, about the horrible date-rape-by-proxy parasite alien squid monster?”
Then after I read it I looked back and realized it was a joke (so far), so I’m good. And to be fair to the movie, Shaw did ask the oddly under-programmed surgery robot for a “cesarian” and not an “abortion.” Probably the smart choice, as it turned out.
Ah, come on, the “Alien” franchise has been peddling liberal propaganda for years. Advocation of abortion and euthanasia? Women in non-subservient roles? Corporations being evil? Marines being unprepared and hapless? And what about Parker and Brett complaining about not getting full shares? That’s CLASS WARFARE!!!
That’s American politics for ye. (Not that it’s much better over here. In the words of Colonel Cameron Mitchell….’Wow, politics really do suck everywhere you go’.)
On the bright side. Starting tomorrow, I’m going on vacation for two weeks. So I’m sure that everybody here will be happy.
Well, the ALIEN movies (of which this is a prequel) have always had the big/only company with a hidden agenda that involves sacrificing people to bring back something that’s perceived to be profitable.
My biggest gripe with the movie is that about 90% of it could be seen/figured out from the commercials. Oy.
Shaw gave birth to the Watchmen squid monster! So that’s where it went!
Heh, I saw the movie last night so, I know the scene you’re referring to. So far, I haven’t heard of any rumblings from the right. Then again … the movie’s just been released so maybe the details haven’t quite sunk in yet. Still, given the circumstances, clever use of terminology to obtain desired results.
Overall, the film was ok. The original left a lot to the imagination to effectively fill in the “unknown/unseen” elements. Yes, the movies that followed essentially give you an excellent idea of what’s going on. The audience already knows the deal. So no real surprises there.
IMO: A couple of names were essentially wasted in roles that could’ve been used otherwise.
I’m deliberately leaving a lot of details out due to the “Spoilers” dynamic.
I’m just disappointed to see how in the future a trillion dollars gets you a spaceship to another world, whereas here and now it would not pay for the budget deficit for a single year.
Also, was Ðìçk Smith the only guy who could do convincing old age makeup? if so, advice to filmmakers–hire actual old people!
For me, when I saw the scene where they begin taking off their helmets, I immediately flashed back to the unfairly underrated “Amazon Women on the Moon.” And I also thought to myself, they have all these scientists on board, and not one of them could think that, while there may be a breathable atmosphere, as spacesuit could also function as a hazmat suit?
Or “Flesh Gordon” where they walk out of their ship, take a deep breath and say “Good! There’s oxygen!”
The GOP isn
Ooops.
I meant to say, the GOP isn’t the greatest threat to mankind. It’s Hollywood’s insistence in sequels, prequels, remakes, etc.
Wait for the information to disseminate outside of fandom and the evangelicals are going to go nuts:
My one big complaint with the movie was the seeming lack of a motivation for the Engineers. Well Ridley has evidently confirmed that Jesus was an Engineer according to an early script draft and an irritating mystery (actually I feel kind of stupid, it’s obvious if you think about it) from the movie now makes total sense.
I’m sure by Sunday some preacher will be pounding the pulpit about the evils and subversiveness of Prometheus.
Or maybe it will pass unmentioned because it’s simply not worth paying attention to. It would be more likely to be interpreted from the pulpit if there were much chance anyone in the congregation would know what the heck the priest/rabbi/imam was talking about.
I don’t think the response Peter expects is that inevitable.
This comment from the guy, (Andrew Klavan), who compared Batman’s methods in the Dark Knight to George Bush’s methods, liked it. No, Klavan doesn’t represent the GOP, but he is a conservative.

It wasn’t an abortion, it was a caesarean. In fact, that it was specifically referred to as the latter in the film was some heavy handed foreshadowing as to what would come later.
I’m pretty sure Shaw said caesarean instead of abortion because abortion is done through the … uh, other input and she wanted it out of her because it was growing exceptionally fast.
I was promised outrage! What happened to it!?
Anyone here care to define what a “person” is — without referring to Jewish law (Exodus) or the physiology of ancient Egypt?
Wow… Way to presume. I haven’t seen any right-wing bashing of the movie out there yet. Please send any links that have such.
What I would like to know however, is why the “Engineers” would inspire the humans throughout history (through cave paintings, carvings, etc.) to come visit them when we could, and it leads to a weapons of mass destruction facility out in the middle of no-where space, if the Engineers were loading up their ships to h=come to Earth to destroy the human race? What possible mutual inspiration was it to come to a death-urn facility?

You assume all the engineers are on the same page. maybe this group were like the fallen angels, come to destroy what others had created. or maybe it was the creators who were the renegades.
Many cool questions. I liked it lots.
(An alternate thought–we all assume that the engineer at the beginning is on earth, that this is how life on earth began. What if the engineers have our DNA because they ARE US? They evolved here on earth and left at some point, leaving behind their less evolved hominid cousins which eventually gave rise to modern humans. Now we show up, a reminder of their humble origins…

I just saw this, and thought of you. It took a while, and it’s small-scale but someone, somewhere, lived down to your expectations.
