Random Thought for the Day

Why is it that “Barry Ween, Boy Genius” is not a series on “Adult Swim?” How is it remotely possible that no one at Cartoon Network has read Judd Winick’s masterwork about a foul mouthed kid genius and realized it would be the perfect complement to “The Venture Brothers” and “The Boondocks?” Get with the programming, Adult Swim.

  1. I have been wondering that since I read the first issue. Heck, it’s almost like Family Guy’s Stewie 10 years later so I don’t get why Fox never went after it, either.

  2. Well, Judd can’t even be bothered to do the Barry in Space series he teased (with promo art!) years ago. I know he’s a big muckamuck at DC now, but throw Oni a bone man!

  3. For that matter, I’d really love it if Winick produced some more comics based on Ween. The series is absolute genius. I know he has his reasons, but it’s still weird to me.

    1. what are the reasons? Barry Ween is the one thing from Winick that I have unabashedly enjoyed. In fact it has probably contributed to my lack of enthusiasm for most of his other work–I’m looking for flashes of Ween and not seeing them.
      .
Only problem I see–I have no idea what the characters sound like but I’ll bet that I won’t like what they’d come up with. Barry in particular; I know he should sound like a kid but I just have a hard time imagining it.

But PAD is right on, this is just MADE for Adult Swim. It’s like printing money, as long as they do it right.

  4. For that matter, how about a Venture bros comic book? And I know a mainstream comics writer who has just the comedy chops to do it right…

  5. Winnick’s BARRY WEEN would be a perfect fit for [adult swim]. For that matter, between Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and The Disney Channel, how is it that no one has made a cartoon series out of Aaron William’s brilliant PS238?

    1. As for Disney, probably due to their having rights to their Sky High movie, which is sorta PS238 as a high school.

  6. I’ve been meaning to ask you if you watch THE VENTURE BROS. Any thoughts about it?

As for Adult Swim, I’d really love them to pick up the rights to reshow DUCKMAN on it. That was a great show.

  7. Wordy McMotto. I discovered both Barry Ween Boy Genius and the Foglios’ Girl Genius on the same historic day, on the same comic rack even, at MillenniCon some years ago. I even wrote theme music for the animated series in my head.

  8. Some may recall that Cartoon Network (as opposed to Adult Swim)had a Winick-created series on a few years back: The Life and Times of Juniper Lee. It was pretty dámņ good, and had that enjoyable-by-kids-AND-adults vibe the best CN originals had.
And then it got dropped from the schedule, and moved around, and eventually it was cancelled. One of the last episodes I managed to catch was a nifty rewrite of the Bigfoot-girl story from one of the Barry Ween comics.
I later ran across an interview with Winick (I no longer recall where) in which he suggested he was somewhat relieved at the cancellation because of the stress of traveling back and forth from his home to the studio.

Done right, an Adult Swim Barry Ween would probably be one of those shows everyone loves and hardly anyone actually watches, like Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil. We’d get a small batch of them and after a couple of years they’d finally say it was cancelled.

  9. I don’t understand. You are both Comic Book writers. Why don’t you just ask him at the next Comic Book writers get-together? Don’t you guys all know each other and talk all the time?

    1. It’s like any other industry: You know some people better than others. I’ve met Judd in passing at conventions, but that’s about it.
      .
Maybe next time I see him, I’ll ask.

      1. Thanks for the response, but for some reason my tongue in cheek remarks (as this was meant) always come off straight when I post them.
I’ll stick to drawing and let the professionals do the writing. I guess it’s a “Don’t try this at home” thing.

  10. Judd is very underrated and often unfairly maligned. In my humble opinion of course. So, if actually wanted this project to happen, I would be very happy to see it come together.

  11. I’d like to hear the reasons Judd hasn’t done any more adventures of Barry in comic book form. I’ve wondered about that for some while.

  12. Random factoid: while tracking down Patrick Rothfuss’ agent, I discovered that he is/was also your agent. Small world.

    1. Andy, how do you get an image to appear in your posts. Is there a link or something to where I can upload one for mine?

  13. I’ve thought the same thing, Peter. Granted, some would probably diss it as a rip-off of South Park and Family Guy‘s Stewie Griffin, but I’d love to see it adapted. And when you consider that Judd has produced TV shows before, I wonder why this hasn’t happened.

  14. Personally, I wonder why a newtowk called Cartoon Network shows non-cartoon shows, like THE OFFICE. Heck, it’s not even cartoonish! (Now SCRUBS on the other hand…)

Yeah, my wife and I saw a trailer ad when we saw the last Harry Potter film were Cartoon Network was making a big deal about how you could now see you favorite live action shows and all new live action originals on Cartoon Network. Jenn and I looked at each other and basically both asked why they should even call it Cartoon Network any more.

All least Syfy changed it’s name from Sci-Fi as it’s been moving away from being a science fiction based channel.

      1. Jerry, how do you get an image to appear in your posts. Is there a link or something to where I can upload one for mine?

      2. Technically, they don’t call it Cartoon Network anymore. Adult Swim is officially classified as a separate network. I know, they’re the same channel and it’s all filing trickery, but they set it up that way so they could go to advertisers and draw a clearer distinction between what Cartoon Network does and who watches it versus what Adult Swim does and who watches it.

        Luigi,
I forget what the stupid thing is actually called, but it’s an avatar linked to my email address through my WordPress account. WordPress isn’t the only blog using these things though. Peter’s blog is friendly to the use of these things I guess.

Yeah, but from what I’ve seen they’re running live action movies during the “Cartoon Network” hours as well. Plus the trailer ad we saw was making a point of saying that Cartoon Network was now showing live action material.

Here it is. Easy to find on Youtube since I knew that was Andrew W.K.in it.

Kinda sad to see how badly his career has imploded. Party Hard and She is Beautiful from his debut album actually showed some promise.
