Stash Wednesday – January 13, 2010

Out this week is the trade collection of the four part “Fallen Angel Reborn” featuring Illyria from Joss Whedon’s “Angel” series. So if you missed that the first time around, you have a chance to give it a go. Plus other, less important titles came out as well.

Interview with JK Woodward about the trade here

  1. I haven’t gotten anything yet, but based on a review I’m looking to pick up some stuff from Radical Comics possibly Rick Remender’s series “The Last Days of American Crime”. It’s amazing that i will rarely not pick up my regular comics based on a poor review, but when I hear about a positive review of something I rush out to try and find a copy. The reason I posted is to see if anyone else is picking up anything radical? How are the rest of their books???

Also PAD, I was wondering if I can get your thoughts on Marvel’s promotion to retailers. Basically a retailer can send the covers of 50 DC comics (they list specific ones that can be redeemed) to marvel and they’ll get a Seige #3 with a special deadpool variant.

    The article is here: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/Marvel-Retailers-DC-100113.html

Part of me is excited any time there’s a variant cover of anything — but the flip side of it is I hate the idea of any comic being destroyed and the idea that retailers are being asked to destroy comics from one company and will be rewarded by a different company doesn’t sit well…I don’t know I thought I’d bring it up as discussions here often help me develop a frame of mind about these things.

    1. Jason, those are comics that will have been on the shelf for a while, which retailers wouldn’t have expected to sell anyway (in many cases they were bought solely for the free rings that came with them). It’s ultimately a net win for retailers…

    2. Also: No one is forcing a retailer to rip the covers off 50 comics. It’s something they would only do (logically enough) if the perceived value of that SIEGE 3 Deadpool variant is greater than the perceived value of the various BLACKEST NIGHT comics (didn’t follow link, but general reportage seems to indicate that it’s the comics that we part of the ROYGBIV ring promotion). In some cases, a shop might be trying to track down 50 issues of the comics, believing the Marvel item to be easily worth the prices involved.

The disturbing thing (to me) will be seeing what the shops do with the coverless comics. I believe selling them is technically illegal (but am not certain). Giving them away might be OK, though. In which case, Marvel’s helping DC give those comics another sales opportunity – free copies of those issues might convince some to starting picking up one or more of those titles.

      1. This is an attempt by Marvel to see how succesful that ring promotion really was. If retailers respond in huge quantities, it means that the actual sales on the books by retailers were poor. That info will be valuable to them in futuire marketing.

  2. Not related to this week’s comics, but wondering if you have anything in mind for when Simon Cowell joins/starts the American X-Factor next year? : -)

    1. I don’t know… maybe Jamie will become an American Ido judge. Unless of course Lewis Black takes that job.

  3. Thanks for promoting the interview with JK, Peter!

Reborn was great; looking forward to more Fallen Angel in the near future!

  4. I’m hoping I’ll get to go to town on Saturday, but I’m not certain yet if I’ll be able to. There are several books I really want, and I know I can’t afford them all.

I’m a bit scared of saying anything more.

      1. That was just a nervous joke referring to something I shouldn’t have said at an earlier time.
And right after I wrote this, I got scared that I was just drawing attention to my earlier mistake and making everything worse. That’s why I immediately came back here today to make sure everything was okay with what I said.
I’m constantly second-guessing myself and I have no social skills.
But don’t worry. I know you’re all friendly here.

  5. Ok, that’s off-topic. I’m playing the Star Trek Online Beta and i was surprised to see Mackenzie Calhoun stationed in the K-7 station as battlemaster… Any money for the character creation or some character created by PAD or some free copy to you?

  6. This isn’t exactly about this week’s stash as much as comic book news this week, but I wondered whether anyone had any comment about Dark Horse’s release of who exactly Twilight is this week, and CBR’s subsequent posting, on their home page, with image (and no warning), of that information. It seemed to me a classic example of the sort of thing Peter had been criticizing a few months back.

It’s made me decide to try and go cold turkey on CBR, Newsarama and IGN for a couple months. (Two days in and I’m not liking it… but I’m hoping the end result that I’m more surprised when I read issues, and for that matter when I go the store…)

Just wondered how others had viewed that whole broo-ha-ha.

  7. Okay, I did it. I actually bought X-Factor #200! Hopefully now, I won’t feel guilty everytime drop by this site (I probably will anyway, because I’m me). I haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I probably will tomorrow.
All my worries about the price turned out to be for naught. I got it for a discount at the Hastings bookstore, but please let me emphasise I did not know about the discount. I took it to the counter with the full expectation that I would pay five dollars for it. But when the guy scanned it it was only $2.99. I have no idea why.

I also went to the comic-book store and got one of your old X-Factors (#76). And I got Jackpot #1 and an old issue of New X-Men (the good series, not the Morrison one). I had planned to get SWORD #3, but they were sold out. The guy promised to order one for me, though, and he said it take close to two weeks, but it will probably be at least that long before I get a chance to go back anyway. I had no idea SWORD was popular enough to sell out that quickly, but maybe he only ordered a few copies in the first place.

  8. While not something I read, I’ve played the beta of Star Trek Online, and came across Mackenzie Calhoun on a starbase. That was sort of cool and unexpected.

Got X-factor: Nation X – enjoyed it per usual.

Picked up Iron Man – I’m digging the series a lot, but this issue seemed kind of like filler between last month and next…

The Siege #1 – undecided. It seemed to go fast.

World of New Krypton #11 – seemed a bit on the nose with the corrupt Kryptonian military establishment turning on Kal-El on a dime. I’m kind of enjoying the complex relationship between Superman and Zod, and hope they don’t completely toss it out the window in the wrap up next month.

Buffy S8 – a little bit more movement, in personal terms, if nothing else.

Oops – Just saw JD’s Star Trek comment. Make that, I saw Mac too.

  9. I haven’t been here this week because of severe computer problems. I just wanted to say that I loved X-Factor #200. I wonder if maybe I was having trouble getting into the earlier issues I’d read because they were in the middle of a complex storyline. Or maybe this new story is just better. Whichever it is, the issue is great.
I really love the handbook profiles of everyone. Since I only know a couple of these characters very well, it’s a great way to get acquainted with them. I had no idea Monet’s history was that complex. I’ve got a few old Generation Xs with her, but only up to the point where she became M-Plate. No wonder she doesn’t seem quite like she did before– she isn’t the same person exactly.
