Got enough comics that my dealer tossed in a free short box to carry ’em in. Which is what happens when I travel around for the last month and make my first pickup in five Wednesdays.
Planetary 27.
I don’t care it was awash in sentiment and was emotionally manipulative. Book of the week for me.
Quite good, I agree. There’s still that one loose end though! Hah. At least one. But… whatever they brought back from the fictional universe. Why spend so much dialogue on it. Must mean something. Wish I had my thinking cap on right now.
Warren Ellis, I thought.
(And note that the issue covered at least a year…”explaining” the delay in the issue).
I got a rock. Wait, Halloween is a few weeks off…
I picked up Knight Life and One Knight Only. Read the first one, funny stuff. Starting the second one now.
Apart from that I picked up loads of Star Wars graphic novels. I haven’t kept up with the series in a while.
And the Soul Key and The Never Ending Sacrifice from Star Trek Deep Space Nine.
On the Video Game front I was going to Get Star Wars Republic Heroes for the ps3 but the reviews say it stinks.
(Also if mentioning books and the odd video game is unwanted feel free to gently let me know in the harshest possible terms)
I picked up Fallen Angel, Buffy and the latest Jack of Fables trade. So far, I’ve only read the first.
.
To quote Dr. Horrible, concerning Benny picking up certain objects on the last page, “that’s not a good sign.”
.
PAD, speaking of trades, will these Fallen Angel miniseries be collected in that format, and if so, are you concerned that people might decide to skip the individual issues to wait for the trade? Or would the trade collections be put off for a year or more, to encourage people to buy the individual issues? For that matter, how often do you anticipate publishing these “miniseries”, and will they all be the same number of issues?

“So what’d you get this week?”
Man, I got hosed!
I ordered the super deluxe Strangers in Paradise Omnibus through my dealer, Mailorder Comics. I thought it strange that it didn’t come in my last shipment, so I asked them about it.
Apparently they aren’t getting it in. Diamond hasn’t allocated any out to them, apparently only ordering 500 copies of the 1250 print run (according to Terry Moore).
Why do we do preorders and prepays for things? I don’t get it. I can understand if they didn’t have enough copies for everybody that ordered, but to under-order it… hmrph!
Fortunately I can order from the SiP site, but unfortunately it’s going to cost me an extra 50 dollars.
Alright, grumble mode switched to off. I think I’ll watch Trick ‘r Treat to make myself feel better.
Fallen Angel – anybody enjoy the irony of the Lee’s predestined statement on free will? I’m enjoying this storyline.
I’m actually enjoying the all ages Iron Man armor wars. It’s fun.
Doom Patrol is, well, Doom Patrol.
James Robinson’s Justice League mini is good (and gorgeous), although I find myself looking forward as much to his accompanying text than the comic.
I’ve always been told that “Strangers in Paradise” was a series I should be reading, but never have until now. I just got the SIP Omnibus. T’weren’t cheap, nearly $160. Luckily, my comics shop has a layaway setup, so, by the time it arrived after I ordered it with Previews, I had $15 left to pay on it, and did so.
I spent a solid six hours reading it last night, and that barely got me halfway through the first volume. This is something that should be a series on HBO or Showtime, with Sara Ramirez as Francine. I’m glad I made this investment in time and money.
Planetary 27 was fantastic, good to see the book end on a character note as opposed to a bombastic epic show-down between good and evil. (did have a bit more technobabble than usual for the book, though.)
Ultimate Spider-Man was the usual solid stuff (I love Peter’s new job at the fast food joint int he mall) and the new character living with the Parkers / Stacy at the end should prove interesting.
I didn’t get to my weekly batch of funnybooks until today. Busy week.
-I got a couple of promo copies with my order: Hulk #12 and Avengers/Invaders #1. I liked both books the first time around, and these covers are very pretty.
-Starr the Slayer #2: I’m really disliking Way’s story. Still, Corben art is Corben art. Someone give this guy a Conan graphic novel or something! Or turn him loose in the super-hero universe and see what he comes up with. I really liked what he did in Banner.
-Incredibles #1: Very enjoyable, but oddly, I wasn’t pleased with Matt Wagner’s art on the cover. Mrs. Incredible (Elastigirl)looked off-model, something that Wagner isn’t generally guilty of. I liked the story and interior art. I get two copies of this comic: one for me and one for my step-grandson. Good read.
-JLA Cry for Justice #4: it’s hard to judge a mini-series halfway through, but I’m enjoying this so far. I look forward to being able to read the whole thing in one sitting.
-Batman and Robin #5: Morrison hasn’t bored me yet. I miss Frank Quitely on the art. Tan is a decent enough storyteller, but I don’t like the way he draws faces. It may be that he’s trying to do a Quitely impression…I see a conscious effort to imitate the way that Quitely draws mouths. If that’s so, I guess I can’t fault him for it.
-Astonishing X-Men #31: this is completely berserk. Very fast-paced storytelling. I’m not usually a Phil Jimenez fan. Usually I find his stuff too cluttered. Either he’s figured it out or I’ve finally woken up. Whichever it is, I really liked this comic.
-Fallen Angel Reborn #4: I’ve liked this comic consistently from the first issue of the first series. PAD hasn’t yet let me down. I don’t like the design of Illyria’s original monstrous form, but I guess that’s why you’d call it ‘monstrous.’ As always, I await the next issue with high expectations. Can’t wait!
I used my library card to read Planetary #27. This is a series I never bought when it came out. I’ve been picking up the trades. When I emailed Mr. Ellis, he said that the final Planetary trade will be solicited sometime after #27 hits the stands. So I’m waiting, and not patiently at all, because the stuff that that hasn’t been collected is really cool, and this issue was no exception.
Good week!
Ok, I am a week late, but I got X-Factor 49 yesterday. It didn’t disappoint. While there was not much action (it clearly was setting the table for the bit #50), it set the stage (to mix my metaphors) well.
.
The dialog in the van was rather funny (especially the fairy godmother crack) yet somewhat realistic. While I am not a particular fan of the gay storyline, PAD definitely knows how to milk it for all it is worth. Will be curious to see where all of that goes.
.
I did seem to miss something when Guido and company suddenly show up at the fight. I assume they did another “X-Jump.” (Or maybe I need to go back and make sure I didn’t miss a page.) But no big deal.
.
But the end was classic. Should have seen it coming. Fits the characters to a “T.”
.
So how soon till #50? I can’t wait.
