Down at Shore Leave

We left at 4:15 AM and made the drive down to Shore Leave in Maryland in a crips four hours, thirty minutes. No traffic between New York and Towson; definitely the best way to go.

A number of fine guests this year, including William Schallert (Patty Duke’s dad) and Gigi Edgely from “Farscape,” although decidedly less blue. Actor Corin Nemec has gamely agreed to participate in the opening sketch for Mystery Trekkie Theater, which will be Sunday afternoon at 5 this year, so that should be fun.

My schedule is surprisingly light, probably due to the abundance of Trek authors. I have a panel in the kid’s track on Saturday and a solo hour on Sunday, during which I plan to do a reading of the script for Spike vs. Dracula #5, so that should be fun. Also, for the first time ever, a DVD of one of my sketches is being made available for purchase. Yes, you can obtain “Monty Sauron’s Flying Nasgul” at the Farpoint Table right here at Shore Leave. I’m taking no cut of it; all proceeds are going to Farpoint, with the exception of 25% which will be donated to the Actor’s Fund. After the convention’s over, I’ll provide details on how you can purchase it mail order.

  1. I’ll see you there shortly, Peter! This year, I can be let out in public if I’m properly medicated, kept away from shiny objects and sharp implements, and keep 50 feet away from Amanda Tapping. (You propose 53 times to an already married woman and she never lets you forget it…..)

  2. “Monty Sauron’s Flying Nasgul” was indeed very funny; although I don’t think it beats the bit about Golem at the Academy Awards. My wife & I both still reference that often. “We hateses the Riverses! Mother & daughter!”.

  3. I’m so disappointed that I’m missing Shore Leave and Mystery Trekkie Theater this year.

Boy, if the Crips made it in 4 hrs 30, how long did the Bloods take?

More seriously, that’s awesome time. It takes us 3-3.5 hours to get to Baltimore from where we are, and you’ve got a LOT more on the front end than we do.

    Have a great time!

  5. I definitely want to get my hands on the DVD. I love to get my hands on all the PAD stuff.

  6. Well I managed to run into a wandering Peter, show him the Robert Crais autograph that he helped inspire, and waste a lot of money. I’ll get Monty Sauron’s Flying Nazgul when he sells it here.

  7. As long as you’re mentioning Coren Nemic and DVDs in the same post, if you get a chance could you ask him if he knows of any plans for Parker Lewis Can’t Lose to come out on DVD? Loved the show back when it was on, and while I’m certain he wouldn’t recall it, he and all the other actors in the cast, as well as the writers and production team, were all very nice to me when I got to visit the set one day.

  8. Hey Peter,

Let me just say this… I have missed you at every Shore Leave or other convention in the DC Baltimore area that you’ve been to since I started comic and Trek collecting back in 92.

Inspite of the fact that LAST YEAR I was living in Towson 3/4 of the year and had an apartment not far from the hotel. I had to clean it the apartment before I came. By the time I was done the con was over. I’ve since graduated college and thus no apartment.) This year I swore never to return to that city again– at least for a year.

Which has lead to the theory that if I’m ever in the same room with you and/or They Might Be Giants (who I’ve missed every year with even odder circumstances including a subway car that mysterious broke down) it will negate the forces of time, space, gravity, the strong and weak nuclear force, magnetism, electricity and even the strongest most important force in creation– funnel cake.

  9. Is the DVD gonna be closed-captioned or subtitled? he asked, hoping it will be, but knowing odds are it won’t be… 8-\

  10. I wasn’t planning on heading back there today…..but when you win 2 raffles, you make the time.

  11. In the mindless nitpicking – Gigi Edgeley’s character in farscape was grey, not blue. You’re thinking of Veronica Hey.

  12. I was so tired when I got home last night (3 hrs b/w Richmond and Towson), but I had a great time. I also managed not to lose my life savings, though I was so tempted.

I’ve only uploaded one pic so far, because a friend wanted to see the one of Corin Nemec and I. I’ll do more tonight.

I mentioned on another message board that getting to see Corin Nemec dance around in a fairy costume is, in a nutshell, why I love Peter David.

And thanks PAD for putting up with me standing around like a dork because I was too tired to muster up a request for someone to take our picture. I tend to freeze up, socially, at very odd times and of course it had to happen right then.

Major kudos to Kathleen for the mugato…er…gumato…er..big white monster costume.

  13. Just want to say thank you for taking the time to sign so many of my books, including the (long foregotten) Psi Man Novel.

Unless I’m mistaken, I seem to remember an interview on a Farscape DVD with Gigi Edgley, where she said the paint she was done up with were actually shades of -blue-, that were -color timed- to look gray. I believe that’s what Peter was referring to.
