Good day, bad day

Good day: Out of the blue, got an offer from a comic publisher for a new title. Details should be available in a few days. So that was good.

Bad day: Was cruising along during my Wednesday night bowling leagues. Had shot five games in the 170-190 range, was about to start my sixth game…and my right Achilles tendon abruptly just went. I was making my approach and suddenly, bam, suddenly could barely walk. I called Kathleen, who came running with an ankle brace, and I strapped up the foot. Completely changed my approach, moving a foot closer to the foul line, taking very small steps, and putting everything I could into my release. Wound up shooting 215 of all things, so I may well maintain that style of approach, but it still hurt like hëll and I don’t know what caused it.

  1. Please allow me the first to gladly say: “AWESOME!” on the first point… As someone who massively enjoyed Fallen Angel, and got my girlfriend to actually say that it had been her favorite comic of the summer (we read the trade and back issues), then I must say that I’m definitely in line for whatever it is that you end up writing next.

  2. You know… I don’t know why but I keep having these weird dreams about Peter writing a new Jimmy Olsen. I just pray the two are not connected.

  3. First, congrats on the offer.

A miner injury to the Achilles tendon can cause huge pain and take weeks to heel. I once got a hair line tear in my and I was working with a cane for a month.
Definitely good see a doctor. I was told to put lifts in my shoe under my heel to take the pressure off the tendon. They won’t do surgery unless there is a big tear.
On the bright side; your bowling is going to improve.

Twinkle Toes David. Did you yell “Yabba Dabba Doo” when you threw a strike? Now all you need is a Flinstone Flyer for transportation.

  5. Awsome news on the offer of the new book. However when are we going to find out about the new Marvel book that was announced around the time Maddrox ended?

  6. Ouchouchouch.

Took wo weeks off work as a driver for Hertz to regain my mental health, went back to work and in four days climbing in and out of cars, i blew my right knee. MRI coming up Saturday.

Hope your Achilles tendon isn’t that bad…

  7. I injured my shoulder at work a couple of weeks ago. I wasn’t sure if I was even going to be able to swing the ball, but I decided I would show up and give it a try. Because I was being much more careful, and slow, I actually bowled better. My arm-swing was much looser, my approach was never rushed, I never “grabbed” the ball at the bottom of the swing, and I shot in the 220’s (my average is 192). My arm finally started giving out in the third game, but since I had been striking so much, I was able to go much further than I expected.

    Just don’t over-do it.

  8. Sorry to hear about the tendon, but I can commiserate with you on the shorter strides. My bowling problem has always been throwing the ball too fast. I’m 6’4″, so I used to start off at the furthest part of the approach from the foul line and take nice long strides. I changed that up recently. Now I start halfway to the foul line, take smaller measured steps, limit my back swing, and — well, I bowled a 277 last week. My ball has a beautiful hook that I need to learn to control now, but it’s fun to watch.

Making such a change on the fly in the middle of league night is commendable. Congrats.

  9. Peter,

Congrats on the new book. Can’t wait to see what it is.

Please keep us posted here on the blog as to how you’re doing healthwise. As much as I want to keep you in front of the word processor, this isn’t how I wanted it to happen.

    Feel better soon, sir!

  10. Geez, I hate to hear about your Achilles tendon, especially given how my heart skipped a beat when I read that you’ll be taking on a new comic title. But props for bowling that well despite being hurt.

Now, could you tease us a little bit about this new book? 🙂 Specifically, can you confirm whether it’s for one of the big four publishers? (I’m not asking you to divulge which publisher by name, merely whether it’s one of the big four: DC, Marvel, Image, or Dark Horse?)

  11. Hmmm, and theres a story on Newsarama about Babylon 5 coming back to comics, with no creative teams yet named….

Could the two be in any way related?

  12. Warped minds think alike. I was thinking that Peter would be the perfect choice for any B5 book. My hope would be for Peter to do CRUSADES.

  13. Don’t really care who the book is for, as long as Peter is writing (and heals soon). I’m thinking it might be related to the House of M Hulk tie-in that I mentioned in the Hulk #80 thread (or a new X-Factor series, given the Madrox mini)(doubt it would be Fallen Angel because the company asked for him to do a series)

  14. You know, it just hit me what Peter’s new title is going to be. There are no Star Trek Comics being done right now. We all know that Peter can write great ST. So….

What is the one company that Peter has not done anything? ARCHIE COMICS. Due to a freak accident at Pop’s Shoppe, Jughead is beamed aboard the Excalibur and meets the characters from New Frontier. The title will be AND I HAVE GULPED THE HAMBURGER AND FELT ITS PAIN.

  15. Sorry about the last post, I meant to write that it won’t be FA because they offered him a new title.

Also, I’m starting to think that it will be B5.

Speaking of B5, I just realised that the initials “B5” looks alot like “BS.”

  16. I miss bowling.
I had to have back surgery last year and now slinging a heavy ball around is a definite no-no.

Eagerly awaiting hearing about what the new title is.

  17. Well, Joe Quesada stated that a new Peter David ongoing would show up after The House of M wrapped back at Wizard World LA, didn’t he? I figure that if Madrox/X-Factor is happening, that’ll be it. I really doubt that they’d call him up about writng the book a month or so after they announced it was happening. I suppose it’s not going to be either “Empress” or “The Adventures of Linda Danvers,” though.

    Ah, well.

  18. Wow, I didn’t think it would post without a membership. Once, on summer vacation, I was running back to my room from the main lodge, up a ramp. As I hit the top of the ramp, my tendon felt like it snapped. I couldn’t move more than 1/4 of a normal walking step. I’m amazed you could do anything, much less continue bowling! Are you crazy?! Hope you feel better soon. BTW, we met at Aggiecon in Texas twice. We sang you “For the Lord of Time”. I’m the one with the Handlebar moustache (now celebrating its 20th year). Year before last, I’m the one who commented on “Crisis on Infinite Supergirls” with Marv Wolfman in earshot. I also passed on your PsiMan book set. Yes, I now regret not buying them, as the first book was enjoyable. I’ll catch up with some online shopping. Oh, during the long dark winter months, I kept my moods up by reading your toungue-in-cheek novels, including King Arthur and New Frontier. Your stuff helped keep me going, and helped take my mind off of my day. Thanks. Now if I can only get my library to stock the sequel to BEING HUMAN or TONG LASHING. Apropos really shows you can write a novel from whole cloth. As far as I am concerned, you are now a major league author.

  19. I think they should let you be the writer for the next Star Trek series. But then we might lose you on the Incredible Hulk and I don’t think that we fans could bear to lose you again.

  20. Offers for a new title are always a good thing. Look forward to hearing more about it.

  21. I hear ya wolfe. I’ve had 2 herniated discs for the past 2 years and it is very intrusive on daily living, muchless overall mood and interactions with others. Chronic pain sucks. Certainly makes me feel years beyond my 37….. and the epideral that I had only exasperated the symptoms, not to mention setting me up for jokes from friends and half-expecting to stand up and have a newborn shoved into my arms.

    Fred

  22. Or perhaps he’s just getting to do an actual real ending to Spyboy.

    Oh, gods. Please!

  23. I actually tore my achilles a few years ago playing basketball. It was awful and it took a long time to heal. But I did get to go out to bars in a wheelchair and make my friends carry pillows around for me.

Worst part about an injury like that isn’t the achilles, it’s the inactivity. I wasn’t allowed to move around much for weeks and my leg muscles got weak. I basically had to rehabilitate my entire leg with physical therapy. I really hope you didn’t tear it, Peter.

  24. Fred: Yeah epidurals really suck. I had two and they were more painful than anything else ( I keep my cool when in pain, but I let quite a large handful of f-bombs drop the first time). I’m definitely glad I finally got surgery though. There’s some stuff I can’t do now (well, i can, but I’ll pay for it for a a few days), but that’s a small price to pay for a decade of sciatic pain finally ending.

    I do miss bowling though….*sniff*

  25. HURRAH!!! CBR claims that there will be a NEW Hulk mini-series coming out in July (and thankfully, it’s not HoM related!)
