The penultimate issue in the “Odyssey” storyline. Out this week. Whad’ja think? (Not that it, y’know, matters much in the long run…)

  1. It matters to me, dámņ it!

The only book from Marvel that I must have and they are cancelling it.

I’ve been with Marvel since Amazing Spider-Man #31 by Lee and Ditko. Why? I don’t know. Every year they do something new to piss me off. Cancelling Captain Marvel is just the latest.

By the way, the bit about “Pedro, the one-legged cabana boy”, on the intro page was hilarious. But was he riding that bike or selling it? (Pedaling/peddling)

  2. I honestly really didn’t like the issue at all. I’ve gotten lost with all these possible futures, mostly because they’re all bland and not fleshed out, making none of them stand out in any way. I don’t recognize the threat Magus is presenting to the characters, and I don’t even understand who the Magus is. Wasn’t that Adam Warlock’s dark half? All the humor fell flat on me, and the “Victor” pun was obvious from the start. The guest artist didn’t add anything.

  3. I liked it. The bit about Hitler was cool, the bit about Reed Richards was obvious (but still in character)…I’m assuming ol’ Vic is probably still around and kicking, with the rest of humanity on some other planet(s) at this point.

I’m curious about the ending. The fact that the ‘vessel’ in question (c’mon, I don’t want to give it away completely to those who haven’t read it) already is a lot more…well, decrepit looking than it is shown here, millenia in the future. Plus the paint is still on it. Artistic license, or some deeper meaning?

Oh, yeah, and it sucks to be a Luxembourger in Pasedena, don’t it 🙂

  4. Liked it.

Kinda expected to see the Hulk from The End to turn up, but not that disappointed that he didn’t.
And I had the same thoughts as Ian about the ending. Curiouser and curiouser.

  5. the last page…not very accurate but….better then the statue of liberty.

EGADS!! I’m gonna miss the adventures of Rick Jones!!!

  6. Really fun issue. I’m really going to miss this series when it’s gone. I thought the new artist did a very good job.

  7. ‘Fraid this month’s issue merely seemed to be a place holder for whatever happens NEXT month, IMO. However, I thought Quinn’s art was professionally well done, although not terribly distinctive.

  8. One question: Heather is human, so why is her blood light blue? Or did we just step into Knights of the Zodiac-style censorship, where blood can be colored anything but red?

You’d have been better asking the colourist that:
    http://comixtreme.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=108866#post108866
Quite simply, Marvel editorial doesn’t like us to show red blood. When it’s an alien, we can use whatever color we want.
When it’s a human, we can either go the “texas tea” route (which means black), muddy brown (which looks downright odd), or just make it resemble saliva.
Sometimes my decisions are not the best, but I always run it by my editor to make sure it’s acceptable.
I hope it doesn’t ruin your enjoyment of the book.
I guess next time I’ll go with the muddy brown.

  10. as for Moondragon’s blood… I just thought it was another Psychic representation of a ghostly being attacking her. You know ectoplasm and that sort… not actually physical… but then if the colorist says its physical… i guess its physical… and is blood.

I liked the issue… while Victor was obvious to those who had read any of your books before or at least familiar to the MU as a whole… i did have a few freinds who weren’t expecting it… And now i’m wondering about the ship on the last page and how the bands ended up there…

  11. I was one of those who was turned off by the insanity storyline. Well, the current one has got my interest! I am very sorry it won’t last much longer. I have no clue how PAD will wrap this up, but I wouldn’t miss it. The banter between Rick and CM is back to what I loved, and the ending was titanic in proportions.

  12. I liked the appearance of the “vessel.” It really showed how this wasn’t the middle east or Nevada. Instead it was right out in the middle of… well you know. If someone who hasn’t read it yet still hasn’t caught on; then they probably never will. At least not unless someone says it out right, or they do read it of course.

  13. Ya gotta bring back poppa Marvel from the dead and have him end up with Marlo and Moondragon. (Cue maniacal laughter) Hahahahahahaha!

  14. Kind of dry with the humor falling flat all over the place. I seem to have lost a lot of emotional investment in the characters over the last couple of years.

I’ve bought every issue of both your Captain Marvel series and the second volume just moved way down the list of books I absolutely have to read first while the first volume was right at the top. And if Genis had remade the universe from scratch without Bill Jemas to influence the series in any way, I have a feeling the book would still still be up at the top of my “MUST READ ASAP” pile.

I would love to see you return to do a Captain Marvel mini-series at some point though, especially if the second volume ends with enough some closure that would allow the characters and storylines a fresh start.

  15. “I’ve bought every issue of both your Captain Marvel series and the second volume just moved way down the list of books I absolutely have to read first while the first volume was right at the top.”

What’s amazing to me is that during the run of the first series, I heard almost nothing but negatives. Too in-jokey. Too much humor. Too much of Rick driving the story. Too inaccessible. With the numbers low, Joe Q. made a point of trying to put the entirety of the blame on the stories.

So I restart the series and what do I hear almost consistently? “Gee, we miss all the humor and fun of the first series.”

This is not to be confused with the Las Vegas cycle of stories on “Hulk” in which fans bìŧçhëd endlessly that the Hulk as a leg breaker under an assumed name was the dumbest thing they’d ever heard. Until I did the Pantheon storyline, at which point fans said the Merged Hulk was nowhere near as intriguing as Joe Fixit, and who cares about the Pantheon, and why is this now a team book? And now it’s years later and people keep asking me when, how, and if I’m going to bring the Pantheon back.

    Keeeerist.

  16. You know PAD… It seems people when content or happy with things tend to stay quiet. Its only when they don’t like things that they get vocal. Sure there are those who do voice they’re happiness but its nowhere near to the number that will let they’re voices be heard when they don’t like things… Me I loved both versions of the character. I could even see the craziness coming from before the relaunch. I liked Joe Fixit and I liked the Merged Hulk. And back then I didn’t voice how happy i was with the book. Now I’ve learned my lesson… and i voice it as much as I can. I’m tired of loosing the books I love to read. So thanks for CM and now thanks for Fallen Angel. Good Job! Keep it up!

  17. I must say that I did prefer volume 1 to the current, but I stayed wit it because the idea of an insane hero was intriging (and he wasn’t killed or depowered to make way for someone else). I found it a little disturbing that he regained sanity so quickly (or has he?).

Maybe you should have been involved in a corporate trade; Captain Marvel for Powers.

    David

  18. I loved all the various versions of the Hulk _except_ the “we’re in a suburb in Florida one,” although I did enjoy the issues with Man-Thing, just because he and Hulk seem like they should clash a lot more often than they do.

(I also loved the Mr. Fixit days, because I like seeing a more canny, “fights dirty” kind of Hulk.)

I’m sorry to see CM go.

  19. Peter,

My only suggestion or complaint that I recall voicing about the first volume of CM was the excessive (meaning virtually any) use of the Micronau… um, I mean Microns.

Your worst issue of the Hulk was better than the best issue of that series that was not written by you over at least the last 30 years. My only problem with the Pantheon being in the Hulk as often and for as long as they were was that I thought they deserved and could carry their own own book. Still do.

  20. Having missed some comics at my comic shop (no one’s fault but my boss’s… how dare she expect me to actually get work done, rather than running off to the comic shop before it closes on Wednesdays?!), I only just got to read this, and I enjoyed it, but a lot of my interest has cooled since I know the book is ending. I’m still buying it, but I always find myself cooling on books that are ending (that weren’t originally planned as miniseries, anyway).

That said, I think a lot of the problem with people not knowing what they want is that people tend to be a LOT quieter when they’re happy than when they’re not. The squeaky wheel wouldn’t get the grease if the others were just as loud. So, contingent of fans A was perfectly happy with the humor, and contingent of fans B complained. When the storyline shifted, the “B” fans were quiet, but the “A” fans whined.

You can’t please everyone, I guess.

  21. Remember PAD you can’t please everyone, I’m sure there was a sizeable amount of teeth gnashing when they showed Morrison/Quietly’s Beast on New X-Men, believe me I have the dental bill to prove it.
At first I was turned off because Dr McCoy went from the loveable, blue furry beast to the Thundercat Reject.
Of course during Morrison’s run he was able to pull Beast off with pride, dignity, regal and humor(Hindu Sex god comparisons and the classic line on the ex-girlfriend crawling back “I think I might be gay”).
However the art has taken a different turn in Whedon’s book and the good doctor now is a cross between Chewbacca and *choke* G’Nort.
Now if you go over to Newsarama there are readers or trolls there that now tell other fans to shut the f*up about the Beast’s outward appearance, yet if they came up with a good way to revert the Beast back to his popular form, the thunder-beast fans would be up in arms, faster than you could sound their battle cry. Hmmm….time to go brainstorm.

  22. Y’know what would be a big seller?

Moondragon/Marlo Marvel Max series. FULL ON LESBIANISM. Yeah, baby.

  23. I’m in PR and work for a utility, so I can most definitely say you can’t be all things to everyone. And the other poster was right…those who are not happy are usually the loudest. I remember being confused when the Fixit storyline came out, but it quickly became engrossing for me. I loved the Pantheon storyline and the Florida island storyline and was fascinated by where things were going with Hulk and his future incarnation. I will always be a tad bitter that you never got to see that through, and to be honest, after you left, I almost quit buying Marvel Comics entirely. I am now in the process of buying up your work with CM. I see that you brought back Comet Man for a couple issues…I really liked that original mini-series.

  24. I’ve not yet picked up my issue yet so I’ll just speak of the series in general.

The Captain Marvel comic has been the best or the second best comic book published by Marvel during it’s entire run. It’s one of those series where every issue is great fun and interesting.

Rick’s adventures have been fun and stimulating. His interactions with Marvell show us how Roy Thomas should have handled the situation he created so long ago.

Marvell’s changes and the changes in the way he sees the world have been exciting and unpredictable. Marlo, Moondragon, the whole cast have been three-dimensional compared to most comics and at the same time like silly comic strip characters at the same time.

Every issue has been well-done. You’ve sweated blood into this series, but maybe it’s just as well it ends. Why not end a series before it gets stale like Supergirl did?

On the other hand I don’t think Captain Marvel and Rick’s adventures would ever have gotten stale. I’m real sorry the fans didn’t back you up on this one.

If you keep writing comics like this I’ll keep buying them.

But I’ll always be wondering what Rick and Genis are doing this month, now that you won’t be sending me my monthly updates.
