NYIBC

If you’re within commuting distance, or any distance, of Manhattan, and you do not attend the annual New York is Book Country fair, then you should be making every endeavor to do so in the future. Yesterday’s was predictably crowded, but also just as predictably chock-a-block with all manner of interesting things to see and folks to talk with. It’s the only event where I actively seek autographs. At the NBM table we encountered Peter Krupp and Bill Plympton. Heading in the media celebrity direction, we got children’s books signed by Julie Andrews and John Lithgow. Also ran into the board moderator and one of the denizens of the “Peter David Speaks” folder from AOL, although we got permanently separated when Kath and I went over to say hi to Frank Miller at the DC booth. No Marvel booth, which was a shame. Not a *surprise*, mind you, but a shame.

  1. I love NYIBC but as it was a Jewish holiday, I missed it. So instead I read the list of who would be there and felt a vast amount of envy.

I noticed that not one of the NY-based fantasy publishers seemed to be there. Was that true? If so, I would say it’s a crying shame. This fair has made genre fiction more welcome than many others like it and I suspect the fantsy publishers thus chose not to be there. Ah, well.

  2. I wish I could attend, but alas, I’m just not the kind of guy who can afford to travel such distances.

If it’s okay to ask, can you please help promote Supergirl, Young Justice and other fantastic books from DC while you’re there? DC needs all the help it can get, and I’d very much enjoy it if the Flash and the Titans could get some mention there too.

S’okay. Jackie got the signatures she wanted from her favorite mystery writers, we had a fun time wandering around New York, a nice dinner at TGI Friday’s (my treat), and parted at Penn Station for our respective train lines. A cool day.

  4. I hear about this every year.

I’ve got to make it up there at least once, but alas I’m in georgia so that’s big travel.

    Sounds like a fun time.
