I’ve never seen an auction like this in my life

On “The Tonight Show,” Conan just announced that he’s put a rolling suitcase with the show’s logo up on eBay. Only a half dozen or so were made. Out of curiosity I checked to see if this was legit. Not only was he serious, but I watched the bid price go from $1800 to $8200 in–no exaggeration–thirty seconds flat. God only knows what it’s up to by now. Check it out for yourself.

    1. Could be that he’s a smartass. Could be a lot of guys just screwing around. On the other hand, who knows? Maybe some rich comedians decided to get into it.

    2. It’s been stuck a few cents shy of $1 million for a few minutes now. I wonder if eBay has an internal cut-off that doesn’t let it go to seven figures in order to keep fraudulent auctions under control.

      1. I don’t know if you noticed, but most of these high bidders only bid on 1 item (this one). Although I don’t know how ebay works, it seems to me like it’s either people from the show itself making some sort of joke or a smartass, as said above.

      1. That’s entirely possible. On the other hand, all you need is a couple of people with way more money than they know what to do with.

Hey: Has anyone checked on Todd McFarlane’s whereabouts?

        NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

    3. Now, I don’t use eBay… but it’s my understanding, once you put in a bid, you’re obligated to pay that amount… although I’m sure there are ways around it, huh?

  1. Has anything on e-bay ever sold for 7 figures?

I could just imagine what the seller fees for that item would be…

  2. BTW, today’s NEWSDAY reported that with Stephen Colbert finishing his new studio, several items from his old set are up for auction. I wonder how those will do compared with Conan’s auctions: I thought Colbert was more popular, but Conan is on NBC as opposed to basic cable…

  3. Are the proceeds going towards anything charitable? Cause that might explain the astronomical bid. If not, yeah, 14 year old thinks he’s cool and wants to get a shout-out on the Tonight Show.

  4. A look at the bid history shows there are actually 2 bids for $999,999. The one who got the bid in first, actually had lower bids earlier in the bid process. The second person who bid the figure – that was their first and only bid.

They both have relatively low feedback scores (in the 30s) suggesting they aren’t avid ebayers, but this still isn’t their first auction.

  5. I was wondering about the million mark also and couldn’t find a way to search all categories. So I finally I seatched by different categories. Haven’t found any where people have bit, but some items have a *starting* price of over a million (some of these include free shipping) so presumably million dollar bids are possible.
