Stash Wednesday Now on Thursday

Because we were traveling from Australia to New Zealand.

We hiked up a volcano today.

So what did you buy and what summer movies for 2010 have already got your interest?

  1. Neat, you hiked u–WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!? STAY AWAY FROM THE FIRE MOUNTAIN!!

*ahem* I mean, that’s amazing. I wish I had the wherewithal to do something like that.

Movies? C’mon, Iron Man 2, of course.

Also what to check out Avatar, and well, I have got to see Tron: Legacy. I mean Bruce Boxleitner is back to play a role from 28 years ago!

    Hmmm…28 Years Later…

  2. Y’know, i misread your post …

Earlier Kate and i were talking about the cat horking up a hairball, and …

My first reaction was “That must have been some curry!”

  3. Centurion — New Neil Marshall flick? I’m there.
    Iron Man 2
The Expendables — The ultimate 80s man movie?
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World — Maybe it’ll get a summer release. . .
    The Green Hornet
Robin Hood — Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett don’t exactly scream Robin and Marian to me, and Scott’s extremely uneven, but I’ll give it a look.
Predators — I’m a sucker for this stuff.
Prince of Persia — I’m a sucker for fantasy and I’ve a soft spot for the original game.

  4. IRON MAN 2 of course. Maybe TRON 2.

As for films *about* 2010, well there’s the 2001 sequel, 2010: ODYSSEY TWO. Though, as with 2001, it’ll be kind of sad seeing how far off we were about where we’d be in space by now.

  5. Slim pickings. X-Men Legacy was ok, seems like a diversion though. X-Factor has spoiled me with its long running plot – the standard “adventures” often seem boring in contrast now.

Speaking of – X-Factor 50 next week. Woo!

I have no idea what movies are coming out, two little ones keep me too busy these days. I’ll netflix whatever next year :).

  6. For the third time since trimming the $3.99 monthlies out of my list (the only ones left are minis, the Dark Tower books and X-Babies), I have nothing on my pull list this week, which would be three times out of years of readership that such a thing has happened (well, barring the couple years’ break I took during the height of the speculator silliness). That might say something about the wisdom of jacking up prices, but then again, I’m just one guy.
    .
I guess I’ll content myself with picking up some needed supplies, boxes ‘n bags ‘n such…or browse the trade shelves for something of interest. I’ve been meaning to finally get up to date on Fables, after leaving off at the fourth trade.

    1. It is not just you. I drop all comics and I am no longer going to the comic store anymore. I am catching up on book reading. Finished the last ST New Frontier book (I really missed these characters). Next are the two Godfather sequel books: Return & Revenge and then some Star Wars books (over 10 that I bought over the last 5 years and haven’t read). I have PAD’s One Knight Only and the sequel plus The Lost Symbol. It will be months (maybe a year)until I finish them all and have a need to buy another book.

It was not only the increase in price that push me away from comics but since the birth of my son in February I cut my entertainment budget and my reading time.

    2. You are very much not alone. There may be one or two books I’m paying $3.99 (less discount) for, but when they hit that price point it’s a near-automatic drop. Anything over $3.00 gets a serious reevaluation every single month – one less than stellar issue and I say goodbye. $3.00 or less and I’m a bit more forgiving.

  7. 2010 movie? Iron Man 2. Is anything else coming out that year?
    .
Mighty Avengers (I think #30) – Wow. Talk about payoff. This comic is a throwback to the glory years of the Avengers. It continues to improve. And the defining of the roles of Reed Richards, Tony Stark, and Henry Pym (can anyone say “technomage”?) is great. Since Bendis didn’t write this, I am sure it won’t matter in the bigger Marvel universe, but I thought it quite good.
    .
The story itself doesn’t measure up to X-Factor’s complexity, but I must admit I enjoy a comic that doesn’t have X-Factors dour outlook. You want to read a fun comic with both action and decent characterization (even if it doesn’t always match other history), then this is it. It is the best Avengers book out right now. (I dropped Dark Avengers from my pull list and will soon drop New Avengers. I just am bored at stories that go no where.)
    .
Iron Man (#19 I think) – Wow! Talk about another and even bigger payoff. While a few issues (especially the last one) of this series seemed to not do much, that has been the exception. And when you get to the end, something does change. Things do matter. In New Avengers, I feel like it is not much different than when it started (in spite of all that has happened). Not true here. The new role of Pepper Pots, Tony literally losing his mind, and even the bitter ending with a poignant twist (didn’t see that doctor being on his paperwork!)all made the 12 issues really seem to matter. Though good and bad, Iron Man has been the one comic I have always bought hoping it would be good. I must say, under Matt Fraction, it is coming close to being the best run ever. I can’t wait to see what comes next. The redemption of Tony Stark (from the absurd way he was used in Civil War) is finally here.
    .
And, can I hope, a new armor too? While it is the man in the armor that makes the man great, what Fraction did with Potts and her Rescue armor shows what an important role the armor plays in the book.
    .
You know, PAD is going to have to hit a real homerun with X-Factor 50 to top Iron Man. I know he can do it, I just hope he does. 🙂

  8. Aside from Iron Man 2, I’m definitely looking forward to The Expendables and the next Resident Evil. Also, Jonah Hex could be pretty great.

  9. Which volcano?

Tongariro is lovely in good weather, but it was snowing last time I was there.

    1. We really want to go back to New Zealand for another week (or two) of stuff, but we just keep putting it off. We went in August, so they were coming out of their winter; when we go back we’d like to go earlier in the year. 🙂

  10. I got Power Girl #6 and Iron Man #19. Although I enjoy the lighthearted take on PG by Gray, Palmiotti and Connor, I’m not sure if it’s going to justify my continued purchase of the series. Iron Man, however is great. I was never a regular buyer of Iron Man or any of the Avengers-related titles (outside of Ultimates), but Matt Fraction and Salvador Larocca have kept my attention peeled from month to month over the past several months with this title. I genuinely want to see what happens next.

At the Big Apple Con over the weekend, I snapped over 100 pics of over 90 celebrities and comic book creators. I uploaded the pics to Wikimedia Commons, at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Big_Apple_Convention. Any of my pics can be reused for free, so long as I’m credited.

You can read my report on the highlights: http://nitcentral.philfarrand.com/discus/messages/110/28437.html?1256152940#POST370664

  11. Bought the second issue of Spiderwoman this week. Maleev’s artwork is fantabulous, but Bendis’s story is a little thin. I’m not really feeing Jessica’s despondency and anger. I still don’t know who the character is.

Apparently this series also comes in ‘motion comic’ form, but I have a whole heap of problems with that idea….

  12. Where to begin… Walking Dead and Iron Man have Joined X-Factor as series I have to restrain myself from reading in the bloody car before I leave the parking lot. and I continue to be impressed by both the “Blackest Night” and the “War of Kings” storylines. Great space opera that while clearly competing with each other manage to refrain from firing shots at the competition. Two compeltely different animals that I enjoy immensely, especially the way older, more obscure Marvel characters are being brought into the story. (Someone picking up from the classic Starlin “Warlock” plot threads? I’m geeking)

Speaking of Starlin, whose shins do I have to kick at Marvel to get them to release a trade of Starlin’s great “Spaceknights” series? Not only was the story and art beautiful, it ties into the whole “Conquest” thing by introducing the Phalanx. It would seem a no-brainer, but I’ve learned not to use that phrase about this industry lately. (While we’re doing wishful thinking, those designs just screamed “action figures”)

Picked up the Brave and the Bold, since JMS kinda stealth-slid into that series with very little fanfare in my local shop, so I almost missed it. It’ll be interesting to see his take on various DC characters during his run, and so far I’ve been impressed.

Not so much with X-Men Forever. I gave it 3 issues, screamed “WTF?!?” and dropped it. It just feels like there’s SO many things going on “Behind the scenes” and not shown that they’re going to have to put out at least an issue or two of “Flashbacks” to fill in all the bleedin’ gaps. I was able to forgive all the dangling plot lines from way back, but this entire series so far seems like it should just be titled “X-Men: We’ll Explain Later”.

Picked up the first volume of the much-anticipated “Complete Bloom County”. I loved this strip SO much back in the day. The good? It collects strips that I remember reading in the daily paper, but never made it into previous collections. It also has interesting relevant historical/trivia notes and Breathed anecdotes in the margins which I enjoyed for the nostalgia factor. The only bad thing? A few of the strips that some newspapers took exception to appear here in “edited” form rather than how they appeared in earlier collections. One example is a strip referring to an indignant mother thinking she’s found birth control pills in her daughter’s room has been edited to just “Pills”. But this is only a minor quibble, hopefully future volumes won’t continue this trend.

Having missed my usual movie preview thing at I-Con this past year, the only movies on my radar are Iron Man 2 (Of course), The Fourth Kind, Sherlock Holmes (More Downey!!!) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The last has gotten mostly positive but mixed response so far, but to my mind even a BAD Gilliam flick is better than most of the reprocessed, repackaged, rebranded poop being put out nowadays.

Finally, any fellow geeks checked out “The Golden Age of Video” by Ricardo Autobahn on YouTube? I can’t get the dámņ Robocop and Prisoner parts out of my head…

  13. I got:

Amazing Spiderman: Liked seeing Kaine again and liked all the mentions of Ben Reilly. Not a bad issue. Might get the next one.

Spiderwoman #2: The first issue was good, this one was even better!

The Talisman #0: Liked it. Have to get #1 when it comes out.

Summer 2010 movies? Hmmm. Well, Iron Man 2 of course. Maybe Prince of Persia. Not sure what else is coming out next year.

  14. 2010 Movies? Now we’re talking my field!

“Iron Man 2” looks like it could be pretty great (Robert Downey Jr. is on a roll these days, can’t wait to see “Sherlock Holmes” either.)

Why has no one mentioned “Clash of the Titans” yet? I know it’s a March film, but with the directer of “Unleashed” at the helm and the very capable Sam Worthington, I’m getting pretty excited.

And on a lighter note (and is is another early 2010 release), really pumped up to watch “I Love You Phillip Morris.” It’s really nice to see Jim Carey in movies I can actually stand again, let alone what looks to be a movie that will allow him to do his zany comedy, mixed with what we’ve learned about his dramatic talents. Plus, it’s probably going to be the best Valentine’s Day released flick.

I don’t know when they’re going to start releasing the plethora of X-Men movies, but I keep waiting for them to put a release date on Magneto again. From what I’ve heard they have a script ready (and given that it’s Magneto, I sure hope it’s better than Wolverine, because there will be less call to make it an action flick… but I was severely disappointed with Wolverine given that the writer is capable of writing beautifully, he wrote “The 25th Hour,” for crissake! Such a let down). But how are they going to space it out with “X-4,” “X-Men First Class,” and the “New Mutants” movies they’ve sold? And how is the current Disney deal going to factor into these movies becoming reality?

And with the mention of some talented writers, there’s an unspecified 2010 release date for Ed Norton’s adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s “Motherless Brooklyn.” Strange that it’s one of his books that I haven’t read that’s getting the movie deal. Mr. Norton is directing, writing, and starring in it, but I believe he has the capability to adapt and capture Mr. Lethem’s dark ambiance.

  15. Slim pickings this week with only ASM and Incredible Hulk. I’m liking Pak’s book a helluva lot more that Loeb’s. They may have “cured” Banner of being the Hulk psycally, but mentally — hah!

On a sidenote, since Chris Claremont has “X-Men: Forever” and will now be writing a “New Mutants: Forever” title next spring, when is Marvel going to over PAD a “Hulk: Forever” book????

  16. I’m intrigued by or looking forward to:

    Kick-Úš (really like the comic)
Iron Man 2 (really like Downey, Jr & Iron Man 1)
    Toy Story 3
    Ramona and Beezus
    The Expendables
    Green Hornet

  17. The latest issue of “Thunderbolts” was absolutely incredible. Not one panel was wasted. Great test of the relationship of power Man and Iron Fist. stunning art, and great writing by Andy Diggle. Actually outdid “Dark Avengers” and “Ms.Marvel” as far as showing the true darkness of Norman Osborn.
JMS’ “Brave and the Bold” paired up The Flash and Blackhawk. A bit contrived and the actions of one character should cause some controversy, but yet another entertaining, fresh tale by JMS. And done-in-one!
ANYBODY pick up “Oprah Winfrey”, “Joe Biden” or “Bo Obama” from Bluewater? They are quickly becoming known as “The Biography Channel of Comics” and they are filling this niche with material that is competent at worst, excellent at best.
Oh, and the “Archie Marries Veronica” storyline took another surprising turn – literally. You have to read the book to get what I’m saying and I don’t want to spoil anything for someone who may be interested. what I find really interesting is that instead of dragging this story out with their typical 3-5 page stories an issue, these issues of “Archie” have been 100% filled with the storyline. It’s actually weirs to read a full-issue “Archie” story. But it’s entertaining as well.

  18. Disappointing week for me. I missed the new Thunderbolts (which I don’t read regularly, but my new fascination with Essential Power Man and Iron Fist had me looking forward to this issue). All I was left with were Azrael #1 and Angel #25 that I missed a while back. The latter was too convoluted. I understand it picked up from a couple Batman annuals, but I feel like I should have had a little better idea of what was happening. Doubt I’ll pick up #2.
Angel #25 made no sense to me at all. Maybe subtlety and symbolism are lost on me, I dunno. But #26, which I actually read last week was great and Bill Willingham comes aboard with issue 28, so I’m sticking with it. Buffy, that’s more tenuous.
X-Factor #50 next week though; that’s as close to a sure thing as you can get.

  19. Just Justice League for me this week, and it… wasn’t very good. With both Cry for Justice and Blackest Night going on, Robinson doesn’t have a lot do here, so it’s like, “Oh, here’s a group of B- and C-listers you don’t care about, and here’s Despero showing up for no reason other than so that they have someone to fight, and… oops, time for Blackest Night, off you go!” It also doesn’t help that it features all of my least favorite JLAers, or that it apparently takes place after one or more issues of Cry for Justice that haven’t come out yet.

Summers movies of 2010 that interest me? Iron Man 2, definitely. And Inception. And The Green Hornet, if it actually comes out next summer. That’s about it.
