Star Trek: New Frontier from IDW

Just to confirm what’s been announced elsewhere, yes, I will be writing a five issue New Frontier series for IDW next year. It will be completely in continuity and will pick up exactly where the previous NF book left off. There will also be another New Frontier short story set in the Mirror Universe as part of another collection.

I do not have a pub date on the next novel. When I do I’ll let you know.

  1. What a great way to start the day by reading such news. I can hardly wait. Is this one of your exceptions with your Marvel exclusivity?

  2. Awesome sauce.

I still need to read that mirror earth book but other than that I’m all caught up and very excited for this.

  3. Wow. Terrific. Fantastic. Awesome! Incedible.

    I-cant-believe-thats-true.

And such a message 4 days before Christmas.

What better news can a Trek/PAD-fan get?

Hurra!!! Thank you soooo much, Mr. David.
    Vielen vielen Dank!!!!

I`m just wondering if these 5 comic-books will be collected in ONE issue sometime in the future.

Cause I fear that your European Fans probably wont be able to buy the single issues in “stores” like amazon.de for example.

I`m also looking forward to the new NF-Book (don`t matter when it will come out, I`ll wait patiently.).

I`m just glaad that we will be actually SEE Mac Calhoun & Crew again in a Comic. “Double Time” is one of my favourite Trek-comics.

Amazon.de (German one) did announce a “untitled Star Trek: New Frontier”-novell (no. 17) to be released on 6th March 2008. Can you confirm anything on this statement, Peter?

Perhaps this comic will be translated, but I doubt it since your NF-books were cancelled by the HEYNE Publishing House in Munich at book No. #8 (Dark Allies)

But as I always say, your books/comics are even better in the Original English. Translation just destroys your brilliant words.

I wish you and your Family a happy Chanukah and a happy new year.

I know nothing about it. If March 6 2008 was the original release date for the next NF novel, it’s news to me. Since I haven’t written word one of it, it sure isn’t coming from me.

  5. Fantastic news!!
Recently went back and re-read the entire NF series, and any new chapter will be most greatfully received…

  6. 1 This almost makes it worth aging another year. I’m getting older and sitting up and begging with the treat on my nose gets harder and harder. Thanks for the terrific birthday present, PAD.

  7. Way cool. I’m a bit behind on the NF novels, but this gives me an even bigger incentive to catch up.

Between this, Fallen Angel, and “Angel: After the Fall” (which I plan to get the trade of), IDW is becoming quite the go-to place.

Thanks for passing the news along!

  8. Oh wow!! That’s great! I just hope you get teamed up with a decent artist. The other IDW Star Trek series have been less than stellar with both the writing and the art, to put it nicely.

  9. Thats the best Xmas Present you could have given me – besides the book itself. Thx! And cant wait to hear more about it!

  10. Cool.

I found the first NF book going for €2 in a charity shop a few months ago. Never seen any Trek, but I really enjoyed it and have been trying to get my hands on the second one since, but Amazon Marketplace won’t sell it to me for some reason. 🙁

Back to eBay after Christmas I suppose.

  15. Many thanks to former IDW editor Dan Taylor for helping get the ball lling on this before he left.

  16. Saw it being talked about at one of the sites that I only go to in order to realize I’m not the lowest of the low, but still, seeing this confirmation got me more pumped for it.

  17. I learned that the first issue will be out in March 2008. That means, I could have it in time for my Birthday! 🙂

I am looking forward to see what the more recent characters look like. I am mainly thinking of the two Xyons and Moke. Seeing M`ress and Arex should be very interesting, too.

  18. BTW, my post above should be taken as indicating that the IDW New Frontier series is great news. Also, I don’t know how to pronounce “Grozit” and would like help.

I wasn’t actually thinking that you’d all want to know what I was reading today.

  19. thanks for the info. new frontier has been by far my most favorite star trek novels. can’t wait for more! looking forward to the comic too. thanks again, jimmy1

  20. AWESOME! I can’t wait…I’m a bit lost in the continuity, though. Will this occur before or after Calhoun’s appearance in Before Dishonor? I don’t recall if the current NF novels extend to or past that time period…

  21. Yeah, that last New Frontier comic one was absolutely fantastic (anything with Captain Braxton is always worth a look), but now it’s almost nigh impossible to find. Will definitely pick this one up.

Halfway through “Before Dishonour” right now, me likey the odd twist the Borg are taking. Pretty interesting.

  22. I’m a bit lost in the continuity, though. Will this occur before or after Calhoun’s appearance in Before Dishonor?

Missing in Action took place about six months prior to Before Dishonor. When PAD says that the comic “will pick up exactly where the previous NF book left off” and assuming no wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff, I’d assume we’re still six months out from Before Dishonor.

  23. Hey Peter–

I have never actually been able to get Double Time. When it first came out my comic store sold out in only a few hours. They never got another copy. The only con I’ve ever seen one at the guy was asking $15 dollars for. I know IDW has sort of a reputation for securing the rights to licensed books from other publishers. (Transformers Classic for one.) Do you think you could talk to them and see if (maybe as special feature for the trade) you can get them to talk to Paramount, Wildstorm, Pocket and whoever else would need to be talked to get Double Time rereleased. Just a thought.

  24. You can get “Double Time” within the Star Trek trade paperback “Other Realities”.

  25. This is great news!

When I saw IDW doing Star Trek, I thought what a shame it was that you were exclusive to Marvel when you could be doing some Trek stuff.

    Now we get both!

  26. 1 I am new here but I am happy to hear that more of your NF novels are coming out. Got your recent book ( well recent for Canada) for Xmas and have finished it. Absolutly fantastic!!! Loved the way you brought Seven, Spock, Calhoun and others into it! I have been finding it very tough to get Star Trek books lately, especially when you know they have been out for a while. So when your new one comes out I’ll be sure to order ahead!!

And if I could find that trade– I’d be happy as a clam. I tried Amazoning it awhile ago and they said the item wasn’t in stock and to wait six months… then the cancelled the order on me. Well hopefully when I’m at that local comic show this weekend I’ll find it.

So my four PAD hunts will be for Psi-Man book four and then six up, Double Time, the Captain Marvel issues with Spidey 2099 and Spider-Man meets Spidey 2099. (Though I still would love to see a PAD scripted Spider-Man meets Spider-Ham.)

  28. Great Christmas Present Hope for The Next New Frontier Books by Mr. David.
Thank You and your Brain ,hands and Soul for ,”Keeping theDream Alive”

  29. Wow, and I’ve been re-reading the book series again. I look forward to seeing how our intrepid bunch are doing, especially Burgoyne and Selar (got Suzie Plakson’s autograph recently; beginning of my NF autograph collection! ^-^ ).

  30. I have so loved the NF books and characters, and loyally purchased every single one as soon as they came out.

Unfortunately, since you killed Janeway – and we all got your message that you truly dislike Voyager, believe me – with about as much fanfare as TOS whacks Ensign Red Shirt (and about as much respect, too) I doubt I’ll ever be able to pick up another one of your books without thinking about it.

And that’s a sad thing. Because you had a very loyal fan in me.

    Janeway, however, deserved better.

Well, you do what you feel you need to. But be aware that my lack of enthusiasm for Voyager had nothing to do with “dislike” and everything to do with believing that there was loads of potential that was unrealized. I feel the writing totally let the characters, actors–and ultimately the fans–down.

Also be aware that it’s not as if I was sitting there, rubbing my hands together saying “Mwaaahaha, I hate Janeway, there must be some way I can kill her off.” The book was conceived by Pocket Books editorial as one in which Janeway would die, and then I was brought in to write it because they felt I could give her a heroic send-off. But if I hadn’t written it, someone else would have, and Janeway would still be gone.

  32. To Jess Willey:

Try Amazon.co.uk. Type in “Other Realities” under the books headline and you will find it.

It is no problem to order from other Amazons than where you live. I am living in Britain but have ordered from Amazon US and Amazon Germany. Of course you have to keep in mind that postage costs are higher and you have to be more patient but often, it is worth it. I often got things, especially DVDs from Amazon com, I can`t find in Britain or they are cheaper from the USA, even if you have to pay import expenses.

  33. Peter, did Pocket give any particular reason for wanting to kill Janeway off? Was it because they figured there’d be no more onscreen appearances with her? Did they not intend to do any more post-Endgame novels with her? Or did they simply view the character as you did?
