OUT THIS WEEK: FALLEN ANGEL TPB

Not exactly a new title, but the IDW trade collection of the relaunched series’ first five issues is now out. Personally I think it looks extremely nifty. Plus there’s some art corrections, such as the matter of Juris’s amazing regenerating ax,. Also contains a cover gallery plus intro by me and a piece by JK walking you through how a page of FA is created.

I am also told by DC that they are “considering” collecting the rest of the series’ first run in trade paperback and will “decide by the end of the year.” IDW would be thrilled to collect it themselves, but so far DC holds those reprint rights and haven’t released them.

  1. Nice! The TPB sounds good enough that I might have to consider getting it the new version, too.

And that’s very good news that there’s finally some movement on reprinting the rest of the DC run of the series. I have those issues, but I know that a lot of others have expressed interest in trade versions of them; and the more TPBs that are out, the more attention which can be drawn to the current series. Fingers crossed that DC will either decide for certain to do it themselves, or release the reprint rights to IDW!

  2. Snark meter . . . registering high and climbing!

PAD, fine, we know you don’t like the fact that DC isn’t giving you any work right now, but have a little class and suck it up.

  3. When you say “how one page is created”, does this mean from finished script to finished piece, or does it cover anything before the script is finished?

I ask because I recently bought (and read) “Writing Comics with Peter David” (so good I read it twice but still may not have remembered the title correctly) and felt that one of the areas the book lacked was how to pace story against pages. I appreciate it’s difficult to put into words and best learned by writing and communicating with an artist, but I couldn’t find any guidance on how Peter decides whether he’s written enough (ot too much) for a page (or 22).

Ummm, you do know that Peter signed an exclusive with Marvel a few months back, right?

Considering all I did was quote a DC rep (that’s why certain words and phrases were in quotes) in the most straightforward manner possible, and any “snarkiness” is entirely in his own mind, I wouldn’t bet on what he knows or doesn’t know.

  6. Peter David: Also contains a cover gallery plus intro by me and a piece by JK walking you through how a page of FA is created.
Luigi Novi: I had no idea she knew anything about computer art, much less that she had anything to do with the series.

    Oh, you meant J.K. Woodward!

    Never mind……

  7. yo, is the Fallen Angel trade out Aug. 30th, or was it out on Aug 23? I have every single issue of the DC run, but I waited for the trade because I loved the DC run so much that I wanted to experience the IDW run in a single trade paperback.

Daymn, guess I gotta go out and dig out my floppie issues from the DC run to brush up. AWESOME!

sorry if my typing is intolerable, I have had a few of the drinkie-drinkie by this point.

  8. “‘I read the 2nd issue of Fallen Angel last night, and found something puzzling. It appeared that the ax was shattered by Black Mantra(?), but then a page or two later, it appeared whole again for another attack. Was this a mistake, intententional or did I read it wrong? Thanks!’

“Black Mariah. And if that’s what happened in the pages, then that’s a mistake.

    PAD”

There, now I feel justified, Peter. Here I thought I wasn’t paying attention to detail as usual. Then again, I thought it was Black Mantra, not Black Mariah.

  9. The last time I read Fallen Angel was issue 20, when it was still with DC. When the book moved to IDW I decided that a collected edition was virtually guaranteed, so I waited.

Was a LONG wait, but well worth it. I didn’t realise how much I missed Lee and gang till I opened the book. J.K. Woodward’s art is beautiful (hard to believe he uses paints rather than a computer) and fits the story nicely, and I LOVE the splash page of Lee hugging her son. I have to say though, that the cover gallery did make me miss David Lopez. He was totally underrated.

(I have to gripe a bit about the book design. Dark red fonts against a black background probably isn’t the best idea; I found it hard to read your introduction, and the logo on the cover was a little hard to see – it doesn’t stand out very well.)

  10. is this TPB different from the one DC published?

Yes, this is the trade of the first 5 IDW issues.

Can anyone explain to me WHY DC won’t either publish, license, or give up the reprint rights? It makes no sense to me for those rights to just languish. It’s not like it helps DC to hold those back; IDW isn’t a serious threat to their market presence.

I’d understand if DC didn’t just want to give the rights away, but even so, it’s not like those stories are doing DC a darned bit of good just sitting there, making no money for anybody.

  11. >it’s not like those stories are doing DC a darned bit of good just sitting there, making no money for anybody

    My thoughts exactly.

I understand and concur with the reasons for our copyright laws, but it seems to me that, as seen above, it hurts the creator as much as helps him. How often have we seen the , yes legitimate, rights holders just sitting on a property, all the while the creator isn’t making a cent off them? I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve wanted to buy something only to find the rights owner is keeping it [book, film, audio] off the market. Their legal right of course, but how this helps anyone is unclear. Maybe I’m just slow…

  12. Money issues have forced me to severely limit my comic-book consumption. I generally get my fix at the grocery store spinner rack these days. Unsurprisingly, “Fallen Angel” isn’t something they carry.

But I have yet to read anything you’ve written, Peter, that was anything less than good. So, it’s probably time for me to get up off my ášš and grab a copy of the “Fallen Angel” TBP. Sounds like a good jumping on point from which I can start picking up the new issues of the series.

  13. Call me a Lee junkie, but despite having the individual issues, I still went ahead and bought the trade.

Thanks for the foreword PAD, at least touching on the Linda debate, a reminder of why so many of us read the DC Fallen Angel in the first place. I also liked the cover gallery and JK page breakdown as well.

Let’s hope DC collects the rest of their run in this format as well.

  14. I am not usually a ‘trade’ person, but I waited for the trade on this one.

The cover of the trade is sweet, and classy, too.

My only complaint? Price. The individual issues were $3.99. 5 issues would be nearly $20. The trade is $19.99.

Any chance in the future that the price might be more in line with mainstream comics?

As to the story, I knew I’d enjoy it. And I do. I have only read the first 2 parts, but they are moving quite nicely. Like that Juris is angry.

The art is great, too. Congrats on finally getting another good artist to work with.

  15. “IDW would be thrilled to collect it themselves, but so far DC holds those reprint rights and haven’t released them.”

Does DC lose the reprint rights if they don’t use them, or do they keep them forever whether or not they reprint anything? If the latter, simple CYA explains why they’re not going to just release them even if they decide not to reprint anything more, since that might make someone at DC look bad if IDW made money on something DC gave away. However, would they sell the reprint rights to IDW or you? Would IDW or you buy them?

  16. “Does DC lose the reprint rights if they don’t use them, or do they keep them forever whether or not they reprint anything?”

If they do nothing with the property, the rights revert. In fact, they would have had to revert it to me two months ago except DC decided to bring the trade back into print after allowing it to go OP last year. Curious timing, that.

    PAD

  17. “Curious timing, that.”

Yes… 🙁 Still, I’ve noticed they’ve taken out ads in a couple of the IDW Fallen Angel issues advertising the trade; it could be a legitimate attempt at making profit. If the new run of their FA TPB does well, maybe that’ll lead DC to at least collect and release the rest of the issues from their FA series?

If they keep reprinting the TPB, does DC hold the rights for all of the DC FA issues in perpetuity? (Hasn’t Alan Moore complained about them doing something similar with his work?)

  18. I came VERY close to picking up the trade this past week, despite already owning the issues. FA has become a pleasant surprise on my pull list as I never know when the next issue is coming out.

My only complaint about the trade, though? The same I have with many trades being put out: there was a cover gallery at the back. Personally, I believe that the covers should be used to split up the original issues, like chapters in a book.

I must be the only one out there that feels this way, I guess.

  19. OK, I know I’m dragging up an old thread, but I wanted to mention that I’ve just ordered the TPB off of Overstock.com. I would have waited until I could get X-Factor, too (seperate orders drive up the shipping costs a tiny bit) but it seems that Overstock has less than 5 issues left.

I’m looking forward to my nice, shiny trade. 🙂
