Fallen Angel 1 through 3 sold out

Chris Ryall at IDW has informed me that issues 1, 2 and 3 of “Fallen Angel” are all sold out both from IDW and from Diamond. They are looking into going back to press with issue #1.

  1. Hoo boy, mixed emotions here.

On the one hand … congrats, obviously!

On the other … my local shop screwed up and didn’t get me a copy of issue 3, and I haven’t yet managed to locate one. (The issue was on my pull list, yet they somehow managed to not give me a copy. They promised to reorder it. Uh-huh.) I hope they’re planning to go back to press with all three issues, and not just #1.

  2. Yeah, I guess it’s a mixed blassing–sold out means less were ordered than should have been–but it’s still a blessing. Congratulations.

  3. Oh, that’s great! I’m missing #1 and while I think I can still get #2, #1 was either asking for a re-order or paying 12 dollars. So this sounds wonderful.
BTW, I just got FNSM #6… is the title biweekly and I missed something? Or this was just a special occasion.

  4. Congrats! Does this mean there’ll be a trade collection for those of us who got screwed on both #2 and #3 by their old shop closing down and scrambling to find a new one?

  5. Big “U Da Man” points for you and for IDW for being smarter than DC. BTW, I finally got to MIA. Parts of it remind me of American Pastoral by Philip Roth, in tone and mood…but that might just be me…

  6. I believe FNSM #5 was delayed for some reason, but #6 was on schedule. That’s why it was only two weeks between releases.

  7. First, congratulations, Peter. I am also glad that IDW is so much smarter than DC when it comes to this book.

Second, is there any chance of the remainder of the first series being released in trade? It seems that the success of the current series could translate into new readers for the old…

  8. Congrats!! Anyone know what the print run was on these books? I’m glad to hear that they are producing a 2nd printing. Nice to know that there is still a demand for the first issue and that there are more potential readers out there to get on board for you and the series.

  9. “Well good! About time! Are there plans to extend this beyond the 6-issue run?”

I’m pretty sure that Peter has already confirmed that IDW has decided to make this title ongoing.

  10. Congratulations! That sounds like very positive news!

And, in response to those asking about the length of the run: I believe PAD explained – in a thread about the success of the first issue, IIRC – that IDW likes to start series off with a mini; but that Fallen Angel was already so successful that they’d greenlighted the on-going.

If I’m misrecalling or otherwise incorrect, I’m sure someone around here’ll be able to clear it up; but that’s my understanding of the status of things.

  11. Going off on a tangent here, but is there any chance of the Spike one-shot going back to press? My comic shop, for one, never got it.

  12. Oddly enough, my shop didn’t pull FA #3 for me either (even though I’ve made it a point to pre-order all of the issues thus far). Fortunately, there were still copies on the shelf by the time I realized it was out, so I was able to have the guy at the counter tuck a copy away for me when I stop by on my next major comics fix next week.

I’m glad to hear that the book is finally getting the attention and success it’s deserved all along. As long as someone keeps printing ’em, I’ll keep buying ’em.

  13. Fantastic news, Peter! I’m glad to see that Lee has found such a great new home. I hope she sticks around for a long, long time. I love your dedication to her as well as IDW’s.

And how come you didn’t say anything about you writing an Illyria one-shot?! You know how excited I am for that?

  14. Well, since my last post, I made my trip to my comic store and there are SEVEN PAD issues -plus the House of M Incredible Hulk TPB for my brother, who had to watch his money at the time the issues first came out – among my pile! Now some of that is catch up – my comic shop had been planning to move since the start of February, and then been hazy about the details, so I hadn’t gone too recently; their website finally made it clear that they’re staying put for now, and in fact it sounds like the building they were planning on fell through. ANYway – at least some of my grab may be old; but I haven’t seen mentioned yet that Untold Tales of the New Universe: Justice #1, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6, and – Spike vs. Dracula #1 – have all come out – ! I’ve got some reading to do ….

  15. PAD, a question about TPB.

Does ordering the trades from sites like Overstock.com and Amazon.com hurt the authors and publishers financially? They cost so much less (sometimes $11 for what would be $20 in the store), I’m curious if that comes out worse for you guys.

  16. Congratulations on the sell-out, and three cheers for reprints! (Marvel, *please* take notes…)

  17. Well, after much calling and driving, I at least found my copy. It was the store’s last one, though, so I apologize to anyone else whose day I just ruined. 🙂

  18. Wheeeee–you should read the fallout that this Chris Ryall has been writing on the Comicon message boards about the book not getting into fans hands. Read the board called “Why is there no buzz for Fallen Angel?”

  19. 1This is the best work you have written. I really love the insights into Lee’s past and I can’t wait to see what you don next. I love the book. Take a bow, Peter.

  20. PAD,

#3 was a great issue of FA. Some readers (who are used to more humour in a story written by PAD) may be disappointed with the tone of the book, but I still find myself asking “What happens next?” And if I’m thinking that at the end of an issue, then you know it’s addictive!

    Everybody else,

I’m lucky enough to have a shop that seems to get enough copies of the titles I’m interested in. But here’s another problem: what if they have everything you want, and you just can’t afford it all? I’m finding that DC, Marvel, IDW, Darkhorse, etc. are all “upping their game” in order to compete in a shrinking market.

So, in one way, the readers win, but in another way we feel torn between the titles that we have been collecting long-term and trying something new.

In a nutshell? It’s getting pretty dámņ expensive.

    Tom.

  21. Not sure where else to say this since no thread’s been started on it yet, and this is the most recent thread on your comics.

But I really enjoyed Untold Tales of the New Universe: Justice. I think it’s the best Untold Tales yet this month (and it’s the fourth I’ve read.) It felt like it could have come right out of the original series.

  22. The Fallen Angel is officially saved. Now if only the Soulsearchers could be found…

  23. Awesome, PAD. Good goin’. I’m waiting for the trade – and I’m gonna be all over it. Don’t take it as a detriment; take it as a compliment. I love Fallen Angel so much (I have every single issue of the DC run) that I want to read it in a non ad-broken, non-monthly, single collected format. Which would rule. So, yeah, when do you think the trade will hit? September / October-ish?

  24. Wow, I’ve had the same problem a lot of other people here seem to have had. Even though Fallen Angel is on my pull list, I didn’t receive #2 or 3 on time, and have had to ask my retailer (who was puzzled over why they hadn’t shown up) to re-order them. Same thing happened with #1, but it actually ended up arriving a couple of weeks later. No such luck with 2 and 3 yet.

Although I did notice this most recent time, on my retailer’s file for my subscription list, the title was now listed as FALLEN ANGEL IDW, as opposed to the previous FALLEN ANGEL. Not sure if this is just my retailer’s way of distinguishing between different companies’ titles, or if it’s Diamond’s way, but I’m hoping perhaps it will expedite matters and get Fallen Angel to me on time. Of course, that might not happen if 2 and 3 remain out of print.

  25. Update on my situation:

I went to my comics store today, as I hadn’t gotten to on Wednesday or since, and was delighted to find that they had actually gotten in #2 and 3 for me. Yay!

And yes, my store owner did confirm (without my even asking) that it was due to Diamond listing the title as FALLEN ANGEL IDW rather than FALLEN ANGEL that caused slip-ups.

  26. i’m not surprised. this is good stuff. I honestly thought the book wouldn’t do as well for the $4 pricetag, but it goes to show you have the most loyal fan base.

    later

    Joe V.
