  1. That last issue of PAD’s Hulk was phenomenal…so many nice touches.

I consider it the final Hulk story to this day.

I’m actually surprised Marvel hasn’t resurrected Betty given the movie.

  2. >>Davis had gotten his first shot writing a couple of the Spider-Man titles and his stories were well-received, but there were problems.<<

Um… They can’t even get your name right. Shame on them.

  3. Very cool.

Hey, here’s something I’ve always wondered… we all know about the editorial conflicts that caused you to leave, but weren’t there problems before then? Like, to what extent did all the Onslaught and Heroes Reborn stuff mess up your stories, and did it ever make you want to quit?

  4. Like so many else, I also walked after PAD’s last issue of Hulk. I even got into a giant pointless email debate with some internet kid who didn’t like the issue because it had “too many words.”

Regardless, that was an all-around out-of-the-park homerun issue. I’m sure I’m not alone in craving to know the series of events that led to Bruce’s incredibly sinister visit to Rick’s bedroom towards the end, glowing green eyes and all.

    Maybe one day…

  5. Well, I’m printing it out as I type this and adding to my ever growing stash of Peter David related material.

  6. I think that the paper did a good job presenting you and comicsdom as a more serious form of media than it is usually portrayed as. Not once did I see a “pow”, “zing” or “bang” or questions geared towards the television show. Now if only my local paper “The Detroit News” would pay that sorta respect.

A lot of folks seem to have forgotten (or perhaps didn’t know) that “Incredible Hulk” was actually canceled for about a week at thet ime of Onslaught and Heroes Reborn. And there was such a hue and cry from the fans and even from within Marvel that the book was spared at the last moment, with the compromise of the Hulk being basically split in half. I thought frankly the situation was unworkable; I was prepared to quit right then. But so many people had worked so hard to save the book that I thought it would be ungrateful if I walked off. So I stuck it out and hoped I could make it work. The results were dodgy, to say the least.

  8. Hey Peter… My brother and I want to interview you 🙂

Nice article… an interesting article… and well written… which is not your usual fare these days..

  9. Jason Webb mentioned The Detroit News. Well, Jason, they’ll never get it right about comics. They are such an archaic paper that it would take a real miracle for them to get to the 20th century, let alone the 21st.

  10. All of a sudden, everyone and their brother wants to interview me.

    PAD

Don’t be silly. My brother has no idea who you even are.

Still, since I left AOL, I’ve often wanted to ask you some questions that were off topic on your blog. And even though I know your email address, I’ve always felt that ‘s much too personable and intrusive. Is fans. peterdavid on Usenet an acceptable place to ask a question and expect an answer from you, or is there another alternative you prefer?

Wow, I didn’t know that. I wasn’t on the net at the time, and I don’t recall there being anything mentioned in the comics. I do remember being puzzled by the logic behind the “splitting”, and frustrated with all the crossover disruptions, though. I really wanted to see the whole Future Imperfect thing further expanded and developed. Still do. I hold out hope, someday…

I guess it’s unfortunate Bob Harras didn’t still consider the Hulk a “throwaway” title… ironically due to your efforts…

  12. Just read my Entertainment Weekly and you’re mentioned in the Comics section. Your “Honey I shrunk the Hulk” is recommended by them for their good Hulk stories.

  13. One of your New Frontier novels got a shout-out in Sean Twist’s column in the London (Ontario) Free Press last Saturday, Peter. I’m still in the process of navigating the site to see if they archive the material.

    Cheers, Jon

  14. Hey, PAD’s name came up in the NY Times, right after Kirby and Stan the Man. Cool! Looking forward to your Comicopia signing, PAD!

  15. ’bout time! PAD desereves the recognition he’s been getting lately. Just remember, we all knew it BEFORE they did!

  16. I actually just read your Hulk run for the first time over the last 6 months. Excellent and the last 2 issues were “incredible” the idea of Marlo reading Betty’s book while Betty was dying, mixed with Bruce’s calm suicide attempts makes it one of those stories that lingers for days.

  17. What is a “Peter David?” Never heard of him… I’ll go ask my brother.

And on a slightly more serious note… What run are they talking about? PAD isn’t writing HULK now, is he?

Sorry, I am not *new* to the PAD name. Just not a big buyer of his books. (comics that is)

  18. Very cool interview. It left me wanting to dig out my old Hulk issues. Too bad I sold them off several years ago along with a lot of other comics I wasn’t keeping. 🙁

  19. Nice article… I forwarded it to everyone on our convention committee.

You would think that the guy would mention that you were going to be in Philly in December, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
