“A Lord of Time” Lyrics

Okay, as I promised, since we’re over a thousand hits so far on Kathleen’s video (although let’s try to pump those numbers; she’d never had a video go viral and it’s her birthday today, so that’d be nice to see happen.)

Anyway, here:

A LORD OF TIME by Peter David
With apologies to Billy Joel

Whoah-oh-oh-oh
For a Lord of Time!
Oh-oh-oh
For a Lord of Time!

When I next return from time and space
I might have a somewhat different face
Don’t start debating:
I’ve been off regenerating.
That only happens for a Lord of Time.

When I fight my enemies again,
Master, Daleks, or the Cybermen,
It won’t surprise me,
When they do not recognize me.
That is a hazard for a Lord of Time

Whoah-oh-oh-oh
For a Lord of Time!
Oh-Oh-Oh
For a Lord of Time!

Be it body ten, nine, five or two,
Inside I’m still Doctor you-know-who.
When change is urgin’,
I don’t call some plastic surgeon.
No one does a face job like a Lord of Time.

When I opt to trade in some parts,
I say to myself,
“Hold on to your hearts”
Each time I seem younger than before.
If this keep up much more
I’ll wind up wearing Pampers.

I don’t know where all the time has gone.
Seems my show goes on and on and on
I’m like Eastenders
Except I wear suspenders
I just get off on being Lord of Time.

Year in, year out, year without end,
I’ve traveled alone,
Sometimes with a friend.
Donna, Martha, Tyler and Pond
Into the great beyond
And it’s more than I hoped for.

Don’t know how much longer I will last
Maybe someday my time will have passed.
Until that day comes
I’ll keep on dodging ray guns
And go on living as a Lord of Time.

  1. Happy Birthday! Hope it’s a good one ~ the video of this clever re-working of the lyrics to reflect Doctor Who is an excellent way for Peter to have included everyone in on the fun and extending well wishes to you!

  2. Happy Birthday, Kathleen!!! That was a wonderful performance by you and your husband. Hopefully next year I will be able to see you perform live.

  3. Happy B-Day!!!

I just sent links to the video and lyrics to the biggest WHO fan I know, and she loved it. Thank you for sharing these online for folks who could not attend Dragon*Con this year.

  4. Nice to see that this song continues to have a life, and, like the Doctor, continues to evolve.
As part of the original back-up group (along with Glenn Hauman) for your work-in-progress debut of the song, at the I-Con VIII Cabaret, it really is amazing to see it fully realized with the characters and the harmonies.
And, I’m glad you got rid of the line about the companions being action toys. I always felt that broke the fourth wall a bit too much.

    1. Actually, “toys” was in order to rhyme with “boys.” But in this day and age, having the Doctor say he travels around with boys puts a whole different connotation on it.
