Well, “on” might be questionable; I doubt we’re actually visible on camera. But Kath and I were in the audience for tonight’s edition of “The Colbert Report.”
And boy, did we hit the jackpot. Not only was Colbert’s “The Word” in rare form (Colbert forgot to say “And that’s the Word,” at the end, so he said it at the beginning of the next segment; you might be able to hear my laugh), but the guest tonight is Paul Simon. Simon did two songs, including a duet of “Sounds of Silence” with Colbert. Beautiful stuff. I’ll tell you, this has been some year, with my musical experience ranging from Billy Joel and Paul McCartney seen from upper mezzanine seats with 50,000 people to Paul Simon singing with Colbert seen from about twenty feet away with just over a hundred people.
Be sure to tune in.

Sweet!
Ha! Watching now. ‘The Word’ just ended. Guess I’ll see the addendum after the commercials. I’ll listen for the guffaw.
The description “appearance” reminded of the wonderful documentary film “Strictly Background”.
Paul Simon’s performance of “American Tune” just left me in awe.
I think I did hear you. I wonder if he knew he had such a famed comic writer in his audience.
PAD, I looked for you in the audience, but there were only a couple of shots where the camera was close enough to the audience to make anyone out.
You should have brought a copy of the F’n Spidey issue where Colbert was in a bookstore. He might have appreciated it. Did the people at Marvel talk about all the various ways he’s slipped into the Marvel universe lately (including a mention in Hulk that Reed Richards watches his show) or did every writer just do that on their own?
I still find that amusing. Colbert appeared not just once, but TWICE in FNSM, and yet when Colbert ’08 ads started appearing, everyone thought it was the first time Colbert was mentioned in a comic.
Gotta say, much more jealous that you saw Simon than Colbert.
American Tune is an interesting song for him to sing.
He supposedly wrote it in response to Nixon’s re-election, and it was used a few weeks ago in a very powerful anti-McCain ad.
Just saw that episode (in Australia we get “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” a day later). Good stuff, but where was Paul Simon’s duet with Stephen? Was it edited out of the episode?
I did notice that Colbert forgot the customary “and that’s The Word” before going to commercial – it’s cute that he remembered to say it after the break ended.

Yeah. That’s hilarious.

There was an episode last week where Stephen Colbert feigned upset that Marvel had him losing the election to Obama, then had the Marvel editor-in-chief (whose name I forget) come out and sign the Spider-Man issue with Colbert on the cover (as a bribe to Obama in exchange for a cabinet position), then send the e-i-c off to get Spider-Man to sign the book too. Man, Stephen Colbert must have some great collectibles from the guests he’s had on!
BTW PAD, how big or small is the set for THE COLBERT REPORT? I went to a taping of THE DAILY SHOW a few years ago, and I was amazed at how small the studio was. I think they use a lot of sweeping shots and camera angles to make it seem much bigger on television.
JamesLynch: The man has Captain America’s Shield! That trumps a comic book.
(It’s the actual Shield that Mark Gruenwald had….I wonder if that’s the one Jonathon “Will Riker” Frakes carried when he was Marvel’s Cap.)
DN: They might show the duet tonight (they’ve done that before with musical guests) or it might be on the website.
Hmmm. Perhaps the duet will show up on Colbert’s Christmas special this weekend?
Tivo-ing it right now!
JamesLynch: I’m from Scotland and managed to get tickets for a taping of The Colbert Report during a trip to New York earlier this year (in May).
I also had tickets for The Daily Show a few days later but we got bumped from the audience, so I can’t say for sure how the studios compare, but I was also surprised at how small the Colbert studio was.
I suspect the Daily Show Studio is slightly bigger as the audience line outside it looked longer (and it IS the parent show) but there’s probably not much of a difference, if any.
The “Daily Show” studio seats, I believe they said, 200. “Colbert” fits barely over a hundred. That said, the studio was actually larger than I expected it to be.
