The Gospel of Judas

I have no thoughts on this one way or the other in terms of its religious impact. It’s just that, every time I hear about this, I keep thinking, “Piltdown Man” or “Hitler Diaries.” It just always seems that when some fascinating historical discovery comes along that’s too good to be true…it turns out to be just that.

  1. Gerry: Oh, and Luigi, you’re mostly right. Three of the four Biblical gospels do NOT claim to have been written by eyewitnesses (later traditions about their authorship notwithstanding), but the fourth gospel DOES claim to come from an eyewitness, the Beloved Disciple (whoever that was, the Gospel never reveals his name).
Luigi Novi: Yeah, I forgot about John. Thaks for reminding me. 🙂

  2. David Simon sez: happily accepting the blatant innacuracies of the Da Vinci code

uhm…you do get that the Da Vinci Code was FICTION!!! Dan Brown made it all up. He took ideas he found in Holy Blood, Holy Grail, tweaked them, changed the names, and made basicly a murder mystery up around them.

It’s like debunking Marvel comics because you can’t find the Baxter Building or Avengers Mansion on the map of New York.

  3. I wonder what future generations will be saying about the truth of the gospel when they find old copies of Mad Magazine.

  4. RE: The portrayal of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar.

I think it largely depends on which one you’re watching. I watched about at much as I could stomach of the new version, and yes, Jesus was portrayed as a loony who believes his own press. I think the portrayals of ALL of the characters are much more sympathetic in the original movie.

I seem to remember reading that the reason for this is the fundies getting pìššëd about the original version, particularly with the more sympathetic Judas. Weber’s (supposed) reaction was to say “You don’t like my Judas? Fine,” and then with some miner tweaks, shifting EVERYBODY to the opposite end of the likeability spectrum.

  5. “One of the key points of “Last Temptation of Christ” was that Christ told Judas to portray Him.”

I assume you meant “betray,” but my first thought upon reading that was that Jesus put on a play based on his life and told Judas, “Okay, I want you to play me.”

Still, I’m not sure what that has to do with Scorsese winning an Oscar. It’s not like he wrote the movie.

  6. He took ideas he found in Holy Blood, Holy Grail,

    And a hundred other sources.

Unless you believe the authors of Holy Blood…
