Freaked out Friday: No Pain No Gain but Peter has gained a lot

Kath here.

Peter is practically incapacitated by pain so our world is the four walls and the Doctor office visits. We know things are going on but right now we don’t care. We are just so very grateful that we have health insurance and our Patreon supporters have made it possible to not worry about co-pays and pharmacy costs. We have a January appointment for pain management but are on the list if there is a cancellation. So think good thoughts for Peter as he navigates his way back to health.

Yes, we know that that tax cut for Senators, Trumps, and their monied backers passed.

Yes, we know that they cancelled Christmas in Jerusalem (or rather the usual festivities) due to 45 and his bull in the china shop diplomacy.

We know that the stop gap measure passed so that we will have what is left of our government in the new year.

There is the continued destruction of various departments and public lands all in the name of the almighty dollar.

But right now I think we will settle for Peter getting a solid night’s sleep or being able to walk without support or pain.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it.

Hug your loved ones and tell them how you feel about them. Things can change in an instant.

  1. I pass along my hope that Peter finds relieve sooner rather than later. Season’s greetings.

  2. Kath,

I somehow missed what kind of pain Peter is going through, but it sounds altogether too familiar. I’m actually getting decent treatment from most departments at the VA, and I have Medicare where they fall short of the mark.

I’m so sorry he’s going through this. I understand the “housebound” feeling. I have a lovely view of our spread out neighborhood, but it’s very quiet, and gets a little boring.

I don’t what holiday y’all celebrate, but Here’s wishing you a Happy ChristmaSosticeHanukKwanzika and best wishes for healing in the New Year.

    Jim Davis

  3. Wishing a speedy refuah shelema to Peter.

May I please have his Hebrew name (in “son of ” form) so I can add him to my prayers?

      1. Thank you. I’ve added it. Traditionally it’s the mother’s Hebrew name that’s used for healing so if you’re willing to share that I’ll switch, but either way, know I’m praying for him three times daily.

  4. Hi, Peter sorry for what you’re going through… praying that it gets better..and thank for all the great stories thourgh the years..God Bless.

  5. All my best wishes for a speedy recovery and a happy holiday for your entire family. Finally meeting you and Caroline in the flesh was the highlight of Dragoncon weekend and I will always be grateful for the kindness you extended to me.

I hate thinking of anyone in pain. No, this is manifestly untrue. I hate thinking of PAD in pain and I’m hoping the pain management folks can do what needs to be done. High on the list of “Why has this not been invented yet” devices would be one that could give us a valid, objective measurement of pain. We seem to still be stuck on pictures of progressively less happy smiley faces.

    1. Jay, please give serious consideration to what I’m about to say to you:

All people are welcome here, as long as they abide by principles of intellectual honesty and human decency. Disagreements occur on controversial topics, yes, but in general, nobody here gets shunned unless they ignore basic principles of civility.

With that, I say to you:

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and have a safe and festive New Year.

Thanks for posting that link. 🙂

      1. Sorry, Luigi. I always tried being civil and politely disagreeing. And it was made clear — repeatedly and forcefully and by numerous people — that the mere act of disagreeing was a violation of “decency” and “civility.”
        .
So I took the hint (applied forcefully) and left.
        .
The only reason I came back was 1) I saw that article, and 2) I heard PAD was ailing again. I thought this might boost his spirits a little.
        .
That accomplished, I’m outta here again. Because I can guarantee you that if I answered another “Freak-Out Friday” sincerely, using totally G-rated language and discussing only the subjects without mentioning any individual author or commenter and holding myself to my highest standards of politeness and civility, I’d still be personally attacked and disemvoweled.
        .
The loophole, it seems, is that disagreeing is defined as “lying,” implying that others’ comments are incorrect is “attacking” them, and challenging assertions is “disrespectful.”
        .
Please give serious consideration to this: I’m having my own medical issues that are giving me plenty of free time (LOA from work), but even now I have no interest in wasting my time in getting smacked around while denied the opportunity to defend myself, and no desire to waste my time on a web site where the hosts have explicitly told me I am not welcome.
        .
I saw a PAD-cool link AND heard he could use a spirit lifting, so I broke my exile. But I really don’t see any reason to stick around.
        .
I’m still proud of being the guy who got the phrase “Earth-Shattering Kaboom” sneaked into the Battleship novelization, though. No one can take that away from me.

      2. Jay Tea: Sorry, Luigi. I always tried being civil and politely disagreeing. And it was made clear — repeatedly and forcefully and by numerous people — that the mere act of disagreeing was a violation of “decency” and “civility.”
        .
No, no one has ever stated or otherwise indicated such a thing.
        .
I’ve gotten into lots of disagreements with other people here, including Peter himself, and I was never accused of this.
        .
Quite often your posts here have not been polite. You simply can’t admit that.

  6. Peter: I’m so sorry to hear of your pain. My father in law had nerve pain in his face for some time before the cause was found (cancer). Has anyone suggested CBD oil? It’s illegal in some states due to being derived from hemp or marijuana, but there are other formulations. It has worked wonders for some and would be worth checking out.

  7. Kathleen and Peter, I’m thinking the most intense loving thoughts I can, and aiming them in the direction of Long Island. 🙂
    .
If they seem to exhibit the flavor of bad fried rice, I apologize. That’s because the rice leftover from a Christmas Eve party that I ate last night/early this morning didn’t agree with me, and I’ve been vomiting repeatedly today (and other things), causing dehyrdration, an aversion to eating anything (even the water I drank came back up an hour later), and overall listlessness. Then again, you probably have it worse, Peter.
    .
Have a safe and festive New Year. 🙂

  8. Ugh. Really, really sorry to hear about all of this, Peter and Kath. Wishing you (PAD) a speedy and full recovery and a pain-free New Year!
