First Caroline will be commenting on the fashions and then Peter takes over at 8:30. All this after the jump:
7:11–She’s wearing a dress that looks like it’s made of ice.
7:20–Kerry Washington’s dress looks like pieces of cloth clipped together with a jewel.
7:52–Love Jamie Foxx’s daughter’s dress. Very flowing. Complements her waist.
7:55–There’s a lot of glitter tonight. Hermoine looks great!
8:16–Sandra Bullock’s dress reminds me of a video game called Star Girl.
8:30–Okay, here we go. Ellen looking nice in a tux. Please, no Woody Allen jokes.
8:32–I love that the woman from “Nebraska” was one of the strippers in “Gypsy.”
8:35–Yeah, but Meryl usually doesn’t win.
8:39–“Possibility number 2, you’re all racist.” THAT was good. And stings slightly since I’m rooting for “Gravity.” “12 Years” was wonderful but watching “Gravity” was like seeing nothing I’ve ever seen before. It was purest movie making.
8:42–Jared Leto. Knew it.
8:44–If this speech were being given later in the evening they’d have played him off a minute and a half ago.
8:47–I still can’t believe Carrey wasn’t nominated for either “The Truman Show” or “Man on the Moon.”
8:51–They should have Steve Carrell in his full Gru outfit come out and dance along.
9:00–Kath thinks Dallas Buyer’s Club
9:00- And she was right.
9:12–Kath predicted Mr. Hublot as well, although Caroline was pulling for “Get a Horse.”
9:14–We’re pulling for Frozen, obviously.
9:15–Oh thank God. Now winter can end.
9:17–Sally Field, we still really like you.
9:21–Gravity has to win.
9:21–Bingo. No way Gravity doesn’t win.
9:28–Did everyone see that bizarre Muppets commercial? Kath said she knew half the puppeteers in it.
9:39–Please, seriously–stop singing.
9:43–Ever since I’ve started seeing the “Maleficent” ads, Angelina Jolie scares the crap out of me.
9:51–I remember the days when they used to run a scene from a nominated movie instead of just edited down trailers.
9:58–That song is apparently the main competition for “Let it Go.”
10:06–Wow, Chris Hemsworth is way less beefed up than when he was Thor.
10:07–Gravity may well win every technical award there is.
10:09–See?
10:11–I’m hoping for Jennifer because I want to see if she’ll fall again. But it should really be the 12 years a Slave actress.
10:14–Excellent.
10:17–What a great speech.
10:17–Ðámņ, I thought they were about to bring out Gene Wilder because of the music they were playing.
10:22–I ordered in pizza once at a Chicago Comic Con when I had a panel at noon. It was much appreciated.
10:25–Now those are two actors I’d love to see in a film together: Amy Adams and Bill Murray.
10:27–Great shout out to Ramis.
10:27–Of course it’s Gravity. As I said, every tech award.
10:30–Another tech award. Who’s going to win, I wonder.
10:30–Oh my God, I did NOT see that coming.
10:34–So lemme get this straight: They have Liza right there and Rainbow is being sung by Pink?!? That makes sense.
10:44–Oh my God. How did THAT happen?
10:46–Wow, first Thor, then Captain America. I wonder if Iron Man is showing up?
10:48–There were a LOT of shots from “Man of Steel” in there, and none of Chris Reeve. That’s annoying.
10:53–Is this dead people? Yup. I wonder if Sarah Jones will be there.
10:58–Would someone tell me why Bette wasn’t singing this during the presentation? I’m not trying to be a dìçk about this, but that’s just odd.
11:02–The hëll?!? Sarah’s name was stuck in at the end as if they forgot and shoved it in at the last minute! THAT was weird.
11:06–I dunno if she just had a lot of plastic surgery or if she’s simply aged well, but Goldie Hawn looks great.
11:13–Well, she had NO reason to be nervous. Idina just belted that one out of the park.
11:13–Hey, music from “How to Train Your Dragon.” That was nice.
11:13–Oh, that’d be nice. “Saving Mr. Banks” had a great score.
11:14–But of course, Gravity again.
11:15–I’m figuring this will go until at least what? 11:45? Midnight?
11:16–YES! And little girls all over the country cheer.
11:23–Great. 11:23 at night and now I want pizza. Ðámņ you, Ellen.
11:24–12 years of course
11:25–Yeah, that wasn’t hard to predict.
11:26–Is Gravity up for this? No! Apparently not.
11:34–I knew it. I just KNEW it.
11:42–Gotta be Sandra. Gotta be.
11:44–SON OF A BÍTÇH!
11:48–Yay, she didn’t trip.
11:49–I’d love it if Dern won. He won’t, but the speech would be worth it.
11:51–I’ll be dámņëd. I thought sure the guy from 12 Years had it wrapped up.
11:55–Cool! Will’s doing best picture!
11:57–SERIOUSLY? Gravity wins almost every technical award and best director and “12 Years a Slave” is the best picture? Jesus. I mean, there’s no denying it’s an incredible movie, but in terms of pure filmic experience “Gravity” is simply better.

I haven’t seen many of the major nominated movies this year, but it was good to see that they didn’t cut Leto off. Hopefully that continues the rest of the night, but I’m not counting on it.
I’m surprised Jim Carrey didn’t get a nomination for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
What a great movie. I also liked The Majestic
Yeah for Mr Hublot! And The Muppets commercial.
Here’s the extended version of the Muppets commercial. The Oscar one cut some great jokes.

Haven’t seen any of the nominated movies or performances, but I know Neil Tyson trashed ‘Gravity’, so I’m rooting against it.
This is incorrect. He pointed out a set of scientific inaccuracies and the press ran with it as if he trashed it. Please see his comments on the matter.
Riiiight. Anyway, watch ‘Cosmos’.
I came here just to see if you mentioned the time you ordered pizza at the Chicago Comicon. My wife Kathy and I appreciated it.
Chris Hemsworth lost the muscle mass to film a survival movie whose name I cant remember right this minute…
They didn’t show the greatest film hero of all time!
Atticus Finch!!
They showed a lengthy clip of Atticus a few hours ago.
On the other hand, they seem to have left Jonathan Winters out of the “In Memoriam” segment.
I’m glad someone else noticed that Chris Reeve was omitted.
I want to see “Let It Go” win, but it will probably be the song from “Mandela”.
10:48–There were a LOT of shots from “Man of Steel” in there, and none of Chris Reeve. That’s annoying.
Reboots are in, apparently, because I think they also only showed Garfield Spidey, and not Maguire Spidey.
Sorry. I can’t hear that song without hearing it sung bt Krusty the Klown.
Kind of glad Bette is singing after they show they people. The camera stays on those who are being remembered and doesn’t cut to the performer, something that’s been a problem at times.
I think that started last year, when Barbara Streisand sung a tribute to the late Marvin Hamlish.
Which is why I didn’t like Bette’s performance. It was a dated song that really didn’t serve any purpose other than a “serious song” to play after the In Memoriam reel.
That said, I think that was the only thing I would trim from the show.
The clip with Atticus Finch was shown earlier but the clips were about real life heroes. Why? I don’t know.
They had Streisand sing afterwards last year also, didn’t they?
Yes, It was more an extension of the In Memoriam, as it was a tribute to Marvin Hamlish. So it was very appropriate for her to perform, given their professional connection.
I would rather have heard Bette Midler sing it.
The Sarah Jones mention was to steer people to the online “In Memoriam” gallery for folks who didn’t make the cut for the TV show. Which would be somewhat reasonable, if the gallery didn’t have an ad every 4 photos, with no other way to see who is on the list except to page through them all.
And Frozen wins it’s two awards, making the wife happy at least. 🙂
I was really glad that Gravity did not win. The terrible science (especially the flight dynamics) in the movie just ruined it for me. It might have looked nice, but unless they explained it all as an oxygen deprived hallucination, it just wouldn’t win my vote.
I believe Liza has a thing against singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” In the past, whenever someone’s asked her to sing it, she’d say “It’s been sung.” So, this year, she had someone else sing it instead.
9:39–Please, seriously–stop singing.
Why? She got Bill Murray to finally smile.
11:13–Well, she had NO reason to be nervous. Idina just belted that one out of the park.
Even after Travolta mispronounced her name…

A big shout-out to my mom and her co-workers at Oscar de la Renta for the silver dress Jennifer Garner wore. Nice work, Mom! 🙂
Peter David: SERIOUSLY? Gravity wins almost every technical award and best director and “12 Years a Slave” is the best picture? Jesus. I mean, there’s no denying it’s an incredible movie, but in terms of pure filmic experience “Gravity” is simply better.
Luigi Novi: Although I liked Gravity better because it didn’t leave me outraged and wanting to get inside a time machine so I could subject those slaver monsters to justice, I can understand why they might’ve given to 12 Years a Slave. The Academy tends to give the Best Picture Award to “epic” films, particularly dramas and period pieces. It’s also possible that they favor films that may harbor or explore some type of profound historical, moral or political ideas. Gravity, being a science fiction thriller, had that going against it. On the other hand, I thought Sandy would get Best Actress. Cate Blanchett’s victory came out of nowhere for me.
“Gravity, being a science fiction thriller,”
Nit picking, but since it’s based on premises that are entirely plausible given technology that’s been around for a long time, does this qualify as “science fiction”?
Heck, given the retirement of the shuttles, you probably could call it historical fiction!
It depicted the Hubble Telescope, the ISS, and the Chinese station being in the same orbit, and it featured Sandra Bullock wearing just a tank top and shorts under her spacesuit, without the cooling/heating undergarment, or for the matter, the adult diaper astronauts wear on lengthy EVAs, so yeah, it would qualify. 🙂
Well, it features the following:
*A medical doctor (Bullock) servicing the Hubble telescope.
*Two astronauts that never pull down the solar shields of their helmets (which would preclude the audience from seeing their faces).
*The Hubble and the ISS in the same orbital plane and sight line (when the former is 350 miles up and the latter is 230), enabling Bullock to travel from one to the other with nothing more than soft landing jets and a fire extinguisher.
*A Soyuz spacecraft that has a window on it.
*An orbiting Chinese Space Station that doesn’t yet exist in real life.
*Clooney drifting away after releasing Bullock’s tether, when a single tug can bring them together in zero-G.
*When Sandy takes off her space suit in the Chinese station, her hair fairly neat, and is not floating about her head. Also, she’s wearing only a tank top and short shorts, and not the white liquid cooling and ventilation garment, nor the adult diaper (called a “Nappy”), that astronauts wear when they go on long EVAs.
*George Clooney flirting with a woman only three years younger than him.
So yeah, it’s science fiction. 🙂
Given all these technical accuracy problems, it’s about par for the course for historical fiction too.
🙂
Clooney hanging around a woman close to his own age. Well, that describes many of his films, so that just shows how good an actor he is. You were convinced Danny Ocean loved Tess, but no way that Clooney would be involved with Julia roberts in real life.
Actually all of the scientific inaccuracies doesn’t make it science fiction – it makes it fantasy. Here’s another one – being able to accurately navigate space with a fire extinguisher.
Yes ! “Let it Go” won !
Now, if I could find Idina Menzel’s version as a legal download to complete my Oscar-winning songs compilation (because here, in france, it’s not available on iTunes ; all we get are the french version, Demi Lovato’s version, and a few “tribute” versions ; rather frustrating, that ; and music executives dare to complain about piracy !).
Cate Blanchett has won every other award, so her victory at the Oscars wasn’t really a surprise.
Honestly, the more technical awards Gravity racked up, the more sure I was it wasn’t going to win Best Picture.
For PAD’s surprise at 11:57, it reminded me of THE COLBERT REPORT’s comment on GLADIATOR winning best picture: “GLADIATOR wins best picture. Lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, director, soundtrack… could have been better.” Winning a lot of awards doesn’t guarantee a sweep; just look at ARGO, which was got the best picture award but not a best director for Ben Affleck.
GRAVITY vs 12 YEARS … that’s the sort of thing which killed me off the Oscars when ANNIE HALL won Best Film against the original STAR WARS. The latter had a more nominations, more wins, spawned a cultural phenomenon which endures to this day, had people cheering in cinemas … yet lost to a film I daresay a great many people around today either never heard of or barely remember. Feh.
Irony intended?
“9:43–Ever since I’ve started seeing the ‘Maleficent’ ads, Angelina Jolie scares the crap out of me.”
I’ve seen “Sleeping Beauty” maybe twice–once on video in the mid-1980s and once during a theatrical re-release when I was little–and the scene that is burned into my brain is the one where we see a dark, cold fireplace and two bright-yellow eyes suddenly appear in the darkness just before Malificent steps out into the room. There really needs to be a shot like that in the Jolie film.
