Ask the Wife

Since Peter is in Peru and Caroline is in Jacksonville, I thought I would do another edition of ask the wife.

Usual rules apply and if I say I can’t answer something please don’t badger me over it.

So whatcha wanna know?

  1. Well, to start with, what is Peter doing in Peru? Is this an Inca thing or a llama thing?

    1. He is there for the Lima International Book Fair as an invited guest. So Inca would be my guess

  2. What are your thoughts of the Dark Knight Rises? Going into it or coming out of it.

    1. Havent seen it yet. Might go tomorrow early in the day. Will give opinion after that

    1. somewhere in the lower 200 high 190. He doesn’t get much handicap these days when bowling.

  3. Is (Shanna’s?) theater playing Batman and what is their take (as theater owners) of the tragedy in Colorado?

    1. They had been showing To Rome with Love which is sort of a sequel to Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen and Moonrise Kingdom. Now they have Magic Mike. They did show Avengers and MiB3 this summer. Not showing Batman at this time.

Shana and her husband Tim are shocked and saddened by what happened.

  4. Who wears the pants?

Seriously though, what are the pros and cons of being married to a writer? An aspiring cb writer wants to know. . . 😉

    1. We both wear pants. I am not partial to either dresses or skirts. My long time friends will tell you that it is rare indeed to see me in such clothing.

Onto the Pros and Cons of being married to a writer.

We always have something to talk about even if they are fictional events.

Freelance pay can be a bit spotty and some companies need to be reminded repeatedly that they owe money since they seem to want to hold onto it as long as possible.

People tell you how much they love your partner’s work.

Occasionally you have to step far away from the Internet because a lot of garbage is being said about your partner and it will only get worse if you contradict them.

You know things before the rest of the world. This is a plus and a minus. I have been reading X-factor in script form for a while now and have to be careful I don’t say something from an issue that hasn’t been published yet. Also there are cool projects that Peter is currently involved in that I can’t say boo about for about a year or so.

      1. Kathleen David: We both wear pants
Luigi Novi: What about when you visit Scotland? 😉

  5. I had such a blast with your husband´s conference today at the U.S Embassy, too bad they don´t allow cameras 🙁
Anyways, keep up the great work!
    Best regards from Peru! 🙂

    1. Glad you had fun. He is a good speaker.

Sorry you couldn’t take pictures there but I know you can at the booth they have set up for him.

  6. If they made a movie out of AVENUE Q (with a *ton* of warnings to parents that it most definitely ain’t for kids), would you like to see it with the puppeteers visible (like on Broadway), puppeteers concealed (through movie magic), cgi, live action (with costumes, presumably), or sum’n else?

    1. Wow, that’s a hard one.

Now if they did it like a Great Performances piece, I would keep everything as is but that is a recording of the theatrical piece.

The problem is that in the live show you see the puppeteers and, since they are so good, promptly forget that there are humans behind the puppets. I don’t think that would translate to film all that well so I would put the puppeteer behind the playboard and take it from there.

  7. Hi, Kathleen. Thanks for doing this. I hope you and the family are enjoying your summer. Hope you don’t get too empty nest-y over Caroline’s absence.

I don’t know if we’re only supposed to ask you questions about you, or if we can ask ones about Peter that you will pass along to him (or if you’re that familiar with the details/trivia of his work that you can answer these yourself), so feel free, naturally to not answer anything you can’t or don’t want to:

Given the rebooted TOS 2009 Star Trek film, and the fact that New Frontier seems to be dead or in limbo, does Peter now see greater possibilities to possibly write more TOS novels, since so much of the new timeline has not been established, and is therefore, wide open for new stories, characters and premises? Is Pocket going to put out more TOS novels? (I’m not aware if they have or haven’t.)

In the November 2003 thread, someone said, “Back on your blog in October 2003, you said you were writing an article, and needed an exact quote from Amazing Spider-Man #33 for it. Where and when will this article be appearing?” and Peter said, “Can’t tell you yet.” So where was that used?

Peter has said that writing speedsters makes him nervous because they’re unbeatable, and that he could handle Bart Allen because he was easily distracted. But after he was shot by Deathstroke and became Kid Flash, he became a lot more focused. Did this affect Peter’s writing him for episodes of Young Justice, since he wrote them pre-The New 52, or did he just assume it was the more distracted, pre-Deathstroke Bart?

Peter based Kaz from Wolverine: Election Day on Duane “Dog” Chapman of Dog: The Bounty Hunter fame. What is your Peter’s of Chapman? Does he have any negative or positive feelings about him, and if so, how did they translate into Kaz?

    1. Luigi-
Not going to address the Star Trek conundrum at this time. You can ask Peter if you like but don’t expect an answer other than if you want to see more New Frontier, then tell Pocket books that you do. This is now officially a closed topic.

      Spider-man Edge of Time game

Apparently you didn’t see the tag to the episode because it was explained there why Bart was acting the way he was acting.

How are you so sure that Peter did that? He might of said a comparative to give someone an idea what the character is like (he does that all the time) but he didn’t base it on Dog.

      1. Actually, I haven’t seen any of Peter’s episodes, since I don’t watch YJ (though if someone can point out where I can find Peter’s episodes online, I’m there), so I wasn’t referencing a specific episode or behavior; I was just curious about his approach to the character.

I believe I emailed him about it, asking him if he based it on a combination of Duane “Dog” Chapman and Dr. John Condon, who was involved in the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping Investigation, and Peter confirmed that he indeed based Kaz on the former, though not the latter.

Thanks for the answers, and for agreeing to do this!

      2. Luigi… if you want to buy them, they are on Amazon (somewhere around $3-$4 an ep in HD).
        That’s how I watched them.

        TAC

    1. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for my first baseball team the Baltimore Orioles.

I grew up in Atlanta and watched the Braves go from a stinky team to a winner over the years. Again soft spot for the Braves.

I swear that to live in New York, you have to pick a team to cheer for and I cheer for the Mets with Peter.

      1. You never forget your first love. I always have problems when the Phillies play the Mete.

  8. Hi, Kath — thanks for the opportunity.

Can I ask, under what circumstances did you first discover Doctor Who? The show started in 1963 in the UK but I don’t think it hit the US until around the late ’70s, with Tom Baker episodes. Did you meet the Doctor then? Was it by accident or did you seek him out? Or was it some other time and space entirely? 🙂

    Cheers, Jarrod

    1. My first formal introduction to the Doctor was at Starlog article since the PBS station did not show the show. So Tom Baker was really my first Doctor.

I saw my first episodes at a convention in Atlanta (I wanna say Dixie Trek but I could be wrong) and it was “Sunmakers” which was an odd place to start.

Since then I have seen every episode available and few that aren’t that available.

      1. Not a question, but just to let you know, the reference to Dixie Trek made me smile–I remember having some really good times at Dixie Trek over the years.

  9. I found some photos of Peter as Isaac Asimov, from some convention skit. I don’t recognize anyone else in them. I’ll send you the pictures.
Question how was comic con? The New York Times ran an article on it that made it sound as dull and dry as dirt.

    1. It was a blast and a half. I wrote it up on my web log which canbe accessed from the rigth side of Peter’s blog just scroll down till you find it.

It was busy for the start but I had fun.

  10. I have a favor to ask. Can you convince Peter to make a return appearance to Minnesota for one of their comic conventions. The big two day show used to be in the fall but they changed it to spring a couple of years ago if that would help.;)

    1. Not really up to me. Peter doesn’t really just go to a convention these days unless invited so that’s where it has to start. Then we have to look at the calendar and see what we have committed to and what other events are happening around that time.

  11. Hi Kath,
    Just two things:
1.) What is your favorite single issue of a comic book that you recall reading?
2.) It seems a lot of people are already forgetting just how talented Jim Henson was. How he went to a library to learn how to create puppets and puppetry to land a job and wound up a legend. How would you summarize your feelings about Henson – especially given your love of puppets?

    1. 1) Hard to say there have been so many over the years that I have enjoyed and reread a number of times. Can’t really pull one to mind.

      2) Well you have to remember that a generation has past and a little more since Jim died. My feelings about Henson. I honestly can say that I loved the man and his body of work. He is still an inspiration to me. He is one of the best examples of a human being I have met.

      1. Kath – Thank you for your comments about Jim Henson. I have loved his work forever, and always felt in my heart that he must have been a kind and good human being. It is heartening to see someone with a much closer relationship echoes those thoughts. 🙂

  12. Big Bang Theory, Community, Modern Family or something else for your comedy needs? 🙂

      1. The Stackhouse Filibuster, with Angel Maintenance, The Crackpots and These Women, and Six Meetings Before Lunch. That one just for CJ doing The Jackal.

  13. So can you tell me or even hint at the characters who will be left after the five-issues coming that “changes X_Factor forever!” Any new characters coming?

    1. Sorry I can’t. Just know there is some really cool stuff in the pipeline

  14. This probably has been asked before but here it ges. What did you think of Farscape?

    1. Loved it. Thought it was a brilliant science fiction show with really good actors and puppets. I am about to start my marathon rewatch of the entire series.

  15. And a question to the wife of Mr. David. Has he brought a gift from his trip?

    1. He’s still in transit. I know what he got Caroline and she is going to love it.

    1. Pretty well from my point of view.

We have been around for over a year and have done quite a bit.

      1. Good to know. Just started reading The Camelot Papers and I’m really enjoying it.

  16. Hi there! A few months back, I asked you and Caroline what your favorite cartoons were, and one of your answers was “My Youth in Arcadia.”

My question is, how were you exposed to anime? Oh yeah, does Peter watch it? Thanks!

    1. My first exposure to Anime was thanks to Ted Turner and TBS. TBS showed Starblazers, Macross, and a mash- up of Queen of a Thousand Years and Harlock. I love the sweeping stories being told and the characters. In retrospect I know how much those shows were changed for American TV including putting different series out under the same title.

Since then I have become very educated in Japanese animation and enjoy the diversity of the art form.

Peter watches some of it and knows about it but I am the bigger fan of it.

      1. For mr, it was Star Blazers, Voltron, and the chopped all to hëll Gatchaman, which I think was called Battle Of The Planets. And Macross/Robotech.

  17. Dear Kath,

If you and your husband were sitcom characters, who would you be ?

(As for me, I would probably be Cliff Clavin. Yes, I know 🙁 )

  18. Of all of PAD’s Star Trek novels, comics, etc, that you’ve read, which is your favorite?

    1. Hmmmm don’t really have a favorite because I like so much of what he has written.

I am partial to “Bronski’s Dates with Death” because it brings such a strong emotional reaction when I read it.

I think one of my favorite Star Trek novels is Q-in-Law.

I like the Apropos novels and GN.

And there are a couple of things I can talk about in about 2 years but not quite yet.

    1. Not really. I know so many who have tried and a few succeeded I think if I had a good idea that was not a retread, I might attempt but so many have already gone before.

    1. First meet was at an Atlanta Fantasy Fair when he bought one of my Klingon puppets that he then used at Shoreleave in Mystery Trekkie Theater (20th version will be next week at Shoreleave on Sunday). The puppet came with a lesson on how to operate it (my mutant power seems to be the ability to teach just about anyone how to operate a hand and rod puppet) I gave him and his daughter Shana a lesson in puppetry while he was signing. I went home and saw a book on my bookshelf. It was Q-in-law by Peter David and then the lightbulb went off ‘Oh THAT Peter David”.

We got together at a DragonCon when I was still tech director (I think it was my last year in that capacity) and he caught me up on what had been going on in his life. It was fast and took me some time to absorb.

We got to know each other better thanks to AOL Instant Messenger and phone calls. I then came up for a date and we went to the Marvel Christmas party together. A couple more dates and we became a couple.

  19. IS there any chance of some more star trek from Peter? I love Everything he writes, Sir Apropos is my current read, but I miss his Trek books, he it their best writer.

    1. Not up to him. If you want more Trek from Peter, you (the fans) have to tell Pocket books that you want more Star Trek novels by Peter David.

  20. Is Mr. David going to return to write some more Fallen Angel for us in the near future?
