I-Con and Young Justice

Two things happening involving me this weekend.

1) My second episode of the first season of “Young Justice,” titled, “Insecurity,” airs this Saturday morning on Cartoon Network. So be sure to give that a look at 10:30 AM Eastern.

2) I’ll be attending I-Con this weekend at Stony Brook University. I won’t be around Friday, but I’ll be wandering around Saturday and Sunday (I don’t have any table I’m signing at, so it’ll be a case of catch as catch can.) I will NOT be on the Saturday panel about the DC 52 because I saw that as a no-win scenario. As far as writing comics goes, I work for Marvel: if I say it’s successful, I come across as promoting DC work; if I criticize it, I’m a Marvel guy slagging the other company. Didn’t see much point to that. I will, however, be on the panel on Sunday about writing for shared universes.

    1. I don’t see any table assignment. It just says “throughout the convention” and “dealer’s room.” For all I know, they say that every year. But no one has contacted me, no one’s told me I’m supposed to be in any particular place. Just in case, I’ll bring some stuff to sell, but it’s staying in the car until I know for sure.

  1. We’ve really got to get some bigger and better conventions closer to the central Virginia area…

  2. Have fun! I saw the guest list from across the spectrum of media, and I wish I could be there.

There’s a new Denver ComicCon starting up this year. I will probably attend, regardless of who shows up for guests, simply because I’ve wanted a real convention here (no, Starfest, you don’t really count to me).

  3. The blue Police Public Call Box JLA teleporter in Star City was a nice touch!

  4. Watched the new episode of Young Justice, and I’ve gotta ask: at the beginning of the episode, was that little girl Cissie King-Jones with her father Barnell “Bowstring” Jones? Considering the archer focus of the episode, I thought you might have slipped in that reference.

Anyway, if it is, I hope this version of her grows up much more happily and well-adjusted than the version we know so well.

    1. Oh my well spotted.

I also Immensely enjoyed the fact that the teleport was a police call box Next best thing to a TARDIS shame you couldn’t use the sound effect

    2. Yes. Yes, it was. Actually the notion for the reference came from Greg Weisman.

      1. Cool. I’m not surprised the reference flew by some people, I nearly missed it myself.

I have a feeling this version of Cissie might turn out a bit better than the one we know, considering she’s with her father in whatever universe the YJ cartoon is in. All the craziness in her life stemmed from her mother, after all. I wouldn’t be surprised if her experience with the DCU’s archers here might inspire her to someday take the gold in archery at the Australia Games, though. :p

  5. I really enjoyed the episode today. (The first time I’ve actually been able to watch a Saturday morning cartoon in decades!)

Also, did anyone else know that PAD had a story in the Rocketeer Tales 2 #1 issue that came out a couple weeks ago?

  6. “A sai is just a sai.” If that gets kids into “Casablanca” then you, sir, will have done a service to God and country. I am curious how many youths will get that reference. I mean it makes sense for you to make that reference, but a teenager of 2012? Maybe Uncle Barry showed him the classics.

    1. I agree, nice reference. 🙂

The closed captioning didn’t catch it, it just read the word as “sigh”. Including the point where KF tells Artemis to keep the sai, and there wasn’t a pun involved.

CC is indispensable for watching with small kids.

  7. loved Young Justice!! the appearance by your not so friendly neighborhood Black Spider and the TARDIS was a nice touch.Sportsmaster is actually becoming my favorite villain on this show. The sequence with Red Tornado and the rest of the team was nice too”he really needed pants”

  8. ‘Twas a fun episode, from the fake Spiderman to the “why not turn to the dark side? We have cookies!” ending.

My one question (more about the show in general than PAD’s episodes): What’s with all the compromised heroes? Artemis’ relationship with Sportsmaster could ruin the team’s trust of her. Miss Martian is blackmailed by Queen Bee. Superboy is at least partially controlled by Luthor. Heck, that’s almost half the team! What’s next? Black Manta gets proof of Aqualad’s fishstick addiction? The Riddler gets proof that Batman made Robin use Nair? Kid Flash is ashamed to tell the rest of the team about his Dr. Scholl’s endorsement deal?

    1. Well, the theme of the show is kind of “secrets and lies”, considering the cartoon YJ are essentially the League’s spy team. Not the most positive theme, but it is what it is.

    2. Artemis’ shady relations has been part of the series since she was introduced in the series.

  9. Hi PAD,

Been a fan of Young Justice since it appeared but just stumbled onto your site. Was wondering if there’s any chance that Miss Martian was born male but birth gender doesn’t matter to Martians since they can morph into anything and identify as anything they want? I know you can’t exactly spoil anything.
