I’m almost afraid to say it

What the hëll is up with the Mets? Taking two out of three from the A’s. Two grand slams in one game after a two year drought. Over .500, finally. Jose Reyes is the most difficult out in the National League.

A fluke? Or the start of something? And would management really be tone deaf enough to trade Reyes?

  1. Wow, between the Mets and the Yankeees that was 24 New York runs last night! Some games! I think both teams are doing quite well considering their respective disabled lists, and it ought to be a fun Subway Series this weekend!

  2. It’s more a matter of getting value in a Reyes trade. For example, if you could package him and a minor leaguer for someone like Halladay or Lee? The Mets would be fools NOT to take the deal.

But assuming terms are even in the same ballpark, trading him for prospects would be a bad call.

Now that the Mets are healthy I fully expect them to stay in the mix. I had them as a .500 team for the season and I see no reason to change that.

    1. The problem is that they also need to put butts in the incredibly overpriced seats of Citi Field. Reyes is incredibly popular with the fans; they’re even trying to exploit that by making a big push for Reyes for the All-Star game. So the question is, just how much do they want to risk alienating the customers?

Personally I wouldn’t be at all upset if Reyes didn’t make the All-Star squad. It would be just our luck if he gets injured during an optional game.

      1. Agreed for the most part. And right now I can’t think of a starting pitcher who would be available who would fit that bill (butts in seats). But SP is a real need for the Mets and their is always a chance they could resign him offseason.

The other question is do they already know they can’t resign him and just try to get some value…

  3. And now tonight’s game… At least the Tigers have Verlander pitching tomorrow. We’ll see how the Mets do against him.

  4. It’s probably a fluke, and even if it’s not, the Phils and Braves have much stronger pitching. But I am enjoying it while I can. The Mets are a functioning team again, with the right manager, with everyone doing his part, with a GM with a brain, and with hope for the future.

As for Reyes, the sad fact is that he will ask for both money and years. I think, with three big contracts coming off the books, the Mets could afford the money. But I think anyone who gives Reyes more than five years is a fool. I don’t trust Jose’s legs to last that long. And he will ask for and receive seven or eight years somewhere. (The last two games were an amazing audition tape for Detroit.) So Alderson has to entertain offers. The Mets system is very much depleted now, and Alderson knows he has to rebuild.

But I think that no offer will be good enough for the Mets to part company now. The Mets would be wise to let Jose fill the park (regardless of whether the team is contending), make an offer, and live with the two draft picks they would get as compensation.
