“Bronsky’s Dates With Death”

My new novelette, “Bronsky’s Dates With Death,” sees print in the July/August issue of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction which should be going on sale today. It’s the story of an elderly man who winds up pìššìņg øff everyone with his constant, incessant talk about dying…everyone up to, and including, Death himself. Check it out.

    1. I’m not trying to make you feel stupid or anything, Gary, but if you read your own link carefully, you’ll see the flaw. And when you’ll see it, you’ll kind of roll your eyes because of your goof, but don’t feel badly. It could happen to anyone.

Trust me, I’m sure; I have copies of it.

      1. Oops. Flux capacitor must have malfunctioned again.

A bigger issue for me is that they don’t seem to list the current issue (or recent issues) as available for sale. I assumed they would carry it because this is where I get Asimov’s and Analog.

The only place that I can find it is on the Sony Reader site, and I don’t have a Sony reader. Does anyone know where I can order a single copy of the magazine, in either electronic or dead tree form?

  1. I bought the issue specifically to read this (although that’s no implied sleight against any of the other fine stories/columns/etc. also included). I’ll refrain from any spoilers here, but I will say it does tug at the ol’ heartstrings by the time you’re done.

And PAD, I’m assuming the — er, unexpected allusion to the story elsewhere in the magazine was arranged by you? Nice touch, sir.

  2. Unfortunately, the fandsf site itself only has information up to the May/June issue. Good thing you’re more up to date. As for the link Gary Roth put in, yeah, I didn’t catch the error right away either.

  3. Bought the issue on Saturday, read the story Sunday morning with my 8 year old daughter next to me playing with her Pokemon cards. When I finished, I gave her a big hug. She asked why, I just said “‘Cuz.”

    Thanks, PAD.

  4. Peter,
Truly a very touching story. Makes me miss my Dad. The father daughter bond is something special and you caught the essence of it.
    Thanks.

  5. Hi Mr. David,

I loved the story. It’s one of the best I’ve read in 2011. The phrasing and characterization were great, and you did a nice job in exploring the familial relationships.

And what a great conclusion. Nice job with ending a strong piece!

  6. Got F&SF in the mail a few days ago, sat down to read the story last night right before bed.

    Ðámņ dust in my eyes.

I almost went in to where my about-to-be-7-year-old was sleeping to give her a hug, but she needed the sleep.

    Well done, sir.
