Random Thought for the Day

The only major element of the 7th season of “West Wing” that hasn’t played out in the real world is a nuclear power plant in the U.S. melting down.

Should we be concerned?

  1. Well, we’ve had the oil spill disaster in the Gulf. I’d call the disaster of “biblical” proportions, but the damage that thing is going to cause is going to make us long for (most of) the Ten Plagues of Egypt.

    1. I wasn’t counting John Spenser’s passing because that was the series writers reacting to something that happened in the course of production. If Spenser were still alive and it was a story development, then I think Biden might have reason for concern…

  2. The nuclear meltdown occurred just after Vinick came out hard in favor of nuclear power in the debates.

The oil spill occurred just after Obama opened up parts of the east coast for oil.

Obama’s grandmother died on the eve of the election, satisfying the Leo scenario.

    1. I thought it was that the economy melted down just after Senator McCain talked up how strong the economy was.

In either case, if President Obama’s grandmother can stand in for Leo, I think the nuclear meltdown has been metaphorically fulfilled.

  3. Creepy…

Kinda reminds me of the Series Premier of the X-Files spin-off, “The Lone Gunmen”, where a US Anti-terrorist general tries to crash a commercial airliner into the World Trade Center to get more funding for his agency…

      1. Gah. I had forgotten about that..
        .
A lot of people apparently did, considering some of the post-9/11 comments about how nobody could imagine said event occurring… when somebody imagined exactly that.

  4. Well, there was that nuclear waste leaking into groundwater in New Jersey thing this month. Don’t remember the details.

  5. OK, for those of us who don’t remember all the events of the final season of West Wing (Um.. the Santos vs Vinick campaigns and, uh, um… ?), can someone provide a list of highlights?

  6. Didn’t one of the major story lines involve the US getting between China and Russia to stop a war? Or did I miss something in the news today?

    1. There’s always a war going on somewhere that we’re in the middle of.

  7. Did I miss McCain becoming Secretary of State? Or are you allowing “Last Competition In Same Party Standing” to be an equivalent there?

    1. President takes on a former major competitor who spoke scathingly of him during election to be Secretary of State. Yeah, I think Hillary is close enough to satisfy that aspect.

  8. So Peter, I guess you watch the West Wing reruns on Bravo in the mornings like I do. That was the episode this morning.
