  1. I was pleasantly surprised by the new Avengers:Initiative. Dark Avengers was only interesting in that it focused mainly on the X-Men and answered a question about Emma’s future in a way I think I’m pleased with. Really didn’t want to see her entire character arc rehashed already.

New Mutants was interesting. What else did I pick up…that may be it.

Simone is managing to make Wonder Woman almost interesting, but I still don’t think I could ever buy a WW book. I just find nothing of interest in the character herself, only in the way Simone is writing her.

  2. Batman and Robin was just plain weird. Very well drawn and paced, but weird. I suspect that this is all part of the latest Morrison plan, but I am not as impressed as so many others seem to be.

Detective (Batwoman) was quite good, even though I am ready to be done with the Church of Crime. There are a couple of really interesting guest stars, both characters that Rucka has used before. And the art by JHWIII remains amazing. The Question back-up was a bit light on story, but is entertaining.

Flash: Rebirth has a few great character moments, but almost loses me entirely with page after page of gibberish about the Speed Force. What was a good addition to the Flash mythos back in the Waid era has become the end-all and be-all of the speedsters’ world, and it’s getting dull. I hope that Johns is not going to rely on it for every little thing in the new monthly, but so far I think my hopes are unfounded.

    1. Oh, thank God I wasn’t the only person who thought that was gibberish. 🙂 I skimmed it in the store, and instead of buying it, I thought to myself, “English is my native language. Why do I only understand every third sentence of this?”

Instead, I bought “Showcase Presents: Eclipso”. I’m a little disappointed that it stops before the 300 page mark, despite there being plenty more Eclipso material out there, but I suspect that reprints of the 90s Eclipso stuff was out of the question due to royalties agreements for books of that period.

It’s a bit of a slog, at the moment, because Bruce Gordon is just not that interesting of a guy, despite sharing a body with Eclipso. (And honestly, Eclipso’s not that great either. He’s just sort of, “Oh, hey, what’s something evil I can do? Ooh, I’ll do that!” But there’s a lot of potential to the idea.)

  3. X-Factor fans owe it to themselves to pick up the latest Wolverine: First Class.

    Which PAD writes.

And which came out this week.

    1. I loved seeing Madrox in Wolverine: First Class. It was great to see Siryn in the last issue too!

      1. Whose idea was it to have Wolverine share the road with the only person badder than him? That was cute.
        .
(Easter egg for Mr. T and A-Team fans.)

  4. Gotta say that Blackest Night: Titans was just wrong (in a good way.) Zombie jailbait and a set up for something just plain horrible for Donna Troy has me looking forward to the next issue.

  5. Wolverine First Class ftw!!

LOVED the Skottie Young cover. For the people who don’t know, the star of the issue is Jamie Madrox. The co-star is Kitty. And almost NO Wolverine!!!!! YAAAAAAAAYYY!

    (best issue of Wolverine EVER)

  6. In Wolverine: First Class, Logan’s rant about leaking of movie scripts and rough cuts felt wildly out-of-character to me. PAD, just because you want to say something doesn’t mean you can just shove those words into the mouth of whatever characters you happen to be writing at that moment.

    1. Actually, Umber, as the writer, it does mean that.
      .
As long as his editor lets it fly — and here, it definitely does.
      .
Tell you what, Umber — you don’t like that page? Then ignore it. Rip it out or just skip over it. PAD wrote it so you can do that and it won’t interfere with the story in the least.
      .
PAD, it was a bit jarring — but it was great nonetheless. Nice little venting there.

  7. Umber[get a]gryphon
I guess he can write what he feels like writing. That is what they pay him for. I can’t imagine anything wildly out ofcharacter for Wolverine other than dancing Swan Lake in a plaid tutu. He’s been doing this, quite well I might add, for a number of years now. He has thrilled us and wowed us immeasurably. He has my trust he knows what he is doing. I loved the the rant. Keep it goin’ on King David.

  8. Let’s see, I picked up a few – Incredible Herc which was fun to see Amadeus Cho read through Joesph Campbell’s hero mythology because I’m a big fan of that. I also got the latest issue of Runaways, which kind of feels like it’s running down anyway but I like the book, and I got the newest Incredible Hulk (which was good because I like seeing Banner sans Hulk as the protagonist) and the newest Rulk issue (it’s not brain surgery, but it has pretty art, some funny lines, and Rulk being a jerk so I like it.)

I also polished off vol. 6 of DMZ. DMZ is a fantastic book. If you are reading this sentence right now, you are not reading DMZ and you should be reading it now this second because it is that good. And I cracked open Sir Apropos of Nothing HC from IDW, which I’m excited to read because I’m a huge Sir Apropos fan and his apperances are few and far between. That Dark Tower gag at the end of issue #2 is genius. I will say that I usually don’t pick up HCs, I wait for the trades, however I really wanted to read this AND I kind of dig how it’s a hardcover because you look at the cover, see it’s a hardcover, and you figure it’s a super-serious fantasy of Very Important Things. And you open it up and it’s full of cowardice and debauchery and lies upon lies. I like how twisted that is. Oh, and to PAD or whoever updated the bibliography on the site – thank you very much because I was going to buy the HC along with the novella collection that had “Sir Apropos and the Receding Heir” short story (I’ve been literally waiting years to read it. I believe it’s called “Knight in Training”) however the HC has it contained in there AND this website is, swear to God, the only place on the Internet that tells you that “Sir Apropos and the Receding Heir” is included in the IDW HC. Trust me, I checked. The only reference I could find was “prose short story” (which tells you nothing) on an IDW message board, and the Amazon site doesn’t even mention there’s a short story in there. So thank you to whoever updated that fact on this site, because I would have bought the same story twice.

This is my first post using the “.” paragraph breaks. For some odd reason, I feel like I’m admitting defeat by doing that. Odd.
