STASH WEDNESDAY, May 27

I know this entire “attack site” nonsense may make posting to this entry a challenge, but Glenn is working on trying to sort it out.  In the meantime we ask your forebearance.

    1. Crap, you’re right. Well, I’m just going to leave it up. It took me half an hour to post it because the dámņëd “Attack site” thing was blocking WordPress.

      1. Just a stab in the dark here, but perhaps the attack warning could be because of the links in the manga post.

      2. The problem is that it’s not just this site; it’s a multitude of sites.

  1. Old comics count, right? I just read the Blasters Special!
    .
Never heard of it until PAD chatted about it recently. I looked it up, ordered it, and it just arrived.

Good fun. I barely remember Invasion and I should go back and read it for a bit more background. None of the characters were known to me (besides Snapper) but the special did a pretty good job of introducing them all. Almost too good a job because the third act seemed a little rushed. We spend an awful lot of (valuable and interesting) time getting to know the characters, then the climax comes and goes pretty quickly.

The art is fine – standard ’80s style, and successfully striving for some Ditko-ish panels in places. But I didn’t buy it for the art, I bought it for the writer. It was fun, lighthearted, and very punny. With plenty of in-jokes it reminded me a lot of the Batman and Star Trek issues of Dreadstar. And uses some She-Hulk-style comments 20 years before PAD got intimate with Jen.

Well worth a laugh and a couple of bucks.

    1. This was one of my favorite all time one shots. Really was dissapointed it didn’t generate a series or at least a mini.

      Snapper rocks.

  2. While we are waiting for new comics, I had a question to the fans. Has anyone ordered comics through an online service to save money? I am trying for the first time next month and only plan to have them ship it once a month. I dont know if people encountered problems like; lost shipments, damaged comics, wrong comics, comics included that werent ordered.

Shout out to all the comic fans in Austin TX

    1. Back in the early 90s, I used a mail order comics service. 2 different services, in fact. One was superb for as long as I used them. The other was superb until they sold to a new owner, okay for a while after that, then crap when they sold to another new owner. They still have some of my money.
      .
Problems with mail order–many companies have your money for quite a while before you get your comics, you have no control over the condition of the comics, you might have to buy a couple issues of a series that you stopped liking, and you are not current in discussing the issues in hand. It is hard to avoid spoilers for weeks until your books show up. Some books will have been out for 5 weeks before you get them.

There are probably places that will ship your comics weekly, but the additional shipping charges might do away with a large portion of the discount.
      .
If you use a well known service, you probably won’t have any major problems. As I said, one of the services was superb during all the time I used them.

    2. I used M&M Comics for close to 20 years before money became an issue that put funny books at the very bottom of the priority list.
Had 2 comics that were missed, 1 phone call and the problem was fixed. Not bad for 20 years. They’ve been around forever have a good track record. Look them up.
I’ve also heard good things about Westfield Comics, never used them but they have also been around for years. Good luck in your search.

    3. Mail order comics…
I used to order direct from DC for a while, but the comics came loose and were mangled by the post office that I don’t recommend it.

I enjoy my local comic shop and go to them.

But I’ve had good luck with Lone Star comics out of Dallas (MyComicShop.com), from a mail order standpoint. I think Mile High Comics also maintains a subscription service (or used to – been a while since I looked). From the way both companies handled back issues, I’ve had nothing but good experiences.

Most sincere services tend to provide issue resolution options if you do encounter any of the issue you mentioned. I also know that with both, you can call them and ask them about these questions to see what your options are before you decide to subscribe.

So your best bet is whichever company you go with, call them and ask.

      Good luck.

    4. I use Discount Comic Book Service (dcbservice.com) as a suppliment to what I regularly buy at my local comic shop. I’ve been using them for a couple of years now. They have great discounts and I typically buy mostly trade collections (my local shop doesn’t discount new trades) — plus if I’m tempted to try out a new series I will usually pick up the first couple of issues through them because I can get them for about 30-40% off. If I like the series then I add it to my subscription at my local shop, but if I don’t care for it then I’ll have managed to save a few bucks on the couple of issues I did buy.
Anyway, I highly recommend them. I’ve never had any problems with them at all.

  3. Hmmm. Well this past week I did finish TREASON. Another great Star Trek novel by Peter David. Now if only the next one would come out next week.

    1. I just started Treason. I have a question for PAD. When I picked up the book and started reading, it was like I was seeing old friends after an absence. Is that what it feels like when you start writing a New Frontier novel?

  4. I also use Discount Comic Book Service and in the two years or so I have used them I have had no problems. Great service.

  5. Peter, have you by any chance been following Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s run on Fantastic Four? I just read the most recent issue a day or two ago, and the storyline involving the Thing and his lady friend seems awfully familiar to your recent FF novel….

Whoa, a new NF novel? How come I didn’t hear about this??!!??

(Runs over to Amazon to buy it with One-Click…)

  6. A Star Trek question. Since the movie has rebooted the timeline, I am wondering if there will be new novels coming out based on the new movie. I am also wondering if the new novels will really feel that much different from the old ones. Will writing the voice for James T Kirk really should that much different from the original version and the new one? Plys paramount might not want this new franchise over marketed so that they can give the movies a chance to really shine.

  7. Well, I did read the latest issue of WOLVERINE: FIRST CLASS and I loved it. This is not really a spoiler so I will reveal that the narrator is a young Kitty Pryde from the last time that I really enjoyed the character when she was a newcomer to the team. A lot of fun.

Hey Peter, how about a guest appearance by Jack Russell, Werewolf By Night?

  8. Nothing last week (and when I went in the week before to pick up Buffy and Astro City my store didn’t have them, either among my holds or on the shelf; so hopefully they’ll have them when I check this week).
    .
Today, however, I discovered a new comics shop while on an unrelated errand. So I stopped in, and bought the following items on sale: Vol. 3 of Hulk Visionaries, continuing the collection of PAD’s run on the series; Rose by Jeff Smith and Charles Vess (a Bone tie-in) and Titans Companion, a collection of interviews with Marv Wolfman, George Perez and others on the occasion of The New Teen Titans’ 25th anniversary. Looking forward to reading that. I “officially” began collecting comics with New Teen Titans #9, back in April 1981.
    .
I might stop in again for other trades and related items at some later date.
    .
Too bad they have almost nil in terms of back issues. Would have been nice to have filled some holes in my collection, and I’ve been to all the other stores in the area (or had a friend who’s closer to some check for me).
    .
The Hulk Visionaries collection included two comics I didn’t pick up when I was reading Hulk (because I don’t generally pick up crossover titles): Web of Spider-Man #44 and Fantastic Four #320. So those were new to me. Frankly, the Fantastic Four issue felt more like filler than the Web of Spider-Man one did.
